I am several minutes into this sermon and already I have to disagree. It is not friends that keep us alive, happy and content. Rather, it is our relationship with God. If we are in harmonious communion with the Almighty we are exactly where we are supposed to be in this world. If not, then even close friends are a poor substitute for the genuine article. The rabbi is basically denying the reality of God-realization. He is denying that man can know God. Thousands of saints in Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism would beg to differ with this rabbi. After about five minutes I gave up on his sermon. I tuned in because I hoped to hear a commentary on the Kol Nidre. I am very curious about Kol Nidre because of what it reveals about Judaism. Here is what I know. If my understanding is mistaken, please post a correction in the comments. As I understand it, every Yom Kippur, Jews recite a solemn oath known as Kol Nidre. They swear that all agreements, understandings, relationships, even legal contracts with non Jews are non binding and defunct. Think what this means. If true, this explains why Jews can't seem to get along with anyone. Jews do not assimilate into the societies where they live. Some do but they are unusual. Jews are a nation unto themselves. They view non Jews as non humans. Jews -- especially rabbis -- are a dire threat to every society they live in. In my humble opinion, this is why when Jesus returned from India and Tibet at the age of thirty and began his public ministry, he chose Palestine. Why Palestine? Because at that time it was the most spiritually desperate place on the planet. Why was it desperate? Because it was the home of the Jews. Even then, because of Jewish supremacism, they were a threat to everyone on earth. (If you don't believe this read the Book of Joshua.) Jesus arrived and began to teach a very simple message: All people are children of God. All means all. All means everyone. Jesus had assimilated all of the wisdom of the East, yet he formulated it into a very simple message. It was the message the Jews above all needed to hear. Because they believe they are different, better, superior. Did they listen? No. A few did but most quickly learned to despise Jesus for speaking the truth. Here is the upshot: nothing has changed in 2,000 years.
