Shane Smith ( Smith Built )
Приєднався 27 жов 2011
These are the antics of one slightly deranged british shed dweller living by the wise words of It's not stupid if it works! Here you will find me, Shane smith and my never resting brain. Full of ideas and eager to learn new things and push the limits of old things... I have a fascination with the industrial revolution era and Heavy iron is a love of mine, saving old machines and breathing new life into them where I can, so I can learn how to use them to help me transfer those ideas I have into reality. From machining and weld n fabrication too sheet metal work and iron mongering, come along with me and let's have some fun building strange contraptions and learning some new skills accidentally along the way. Welcome to smith built.

Would be happy to share pics on my build. Mine was a bit more involved than yours.
Recently replaced the head and timing chain assembly on my Delica (4M40). Watched your video well in advance and noted a few things for my job. Thanks for sharing!
Really nice to know people appreciate it and it helps them out in some way, makes its well worth the effort 👌
Awesome vid dude
Thank you 😊
Do you have a blueprint or a video of the full build?
There is a video where I built a similar heater on the channel
Ha, you're not alone with your cluttered bench situation!
It's a real challenge

Thanks for watching
Where did you get the furnace? If you built it can you supply plans?
There's a video on my channel of me building it. Never had plans. I just had an idea and went with it
Hi did you push down the turbo to get it out mine is not moving😂
Hello, if you're onabout getting the manifold out, from memory it's the intake manifold first then exhaust. I do remember it being fiddly but I don't think I had to mess with the turbo
Can you build me a oil burner
Not something I'm planning on doing sorry. There's to many potential comebacks for things like safety ect
My wife bought me one of these machines around two and a half years ago and up to now I've had no cause to use it. I hadn't read the instructions since I got it and I've some 20 mm plate to cut and I've just gotten it out and having never used a plasma cutter before I looked on UA-cam and found this video. I'm glad I did coz I'd have had a go at cutting the 20 mm with it and would have buggered it up lol
20mm will need a lot of amps. I have a 100amp set that just about cuts 30mm
Thanks about to do mine 😮
Heat the area before trying to slide them in It makes it far easier .
And where the thermostat location
It's in the silver/aluminium housing with the large diameter ruber hose connected above the alternator. Simply undo the housing and the thermostat just sits inline
Can I ask a question, how to replace, thermostat
It's in the silver/aluminium housing with the large diameter ruber hose connected above the alternator
awesome thank you!
You're welcome
Greetings from across the pond in communist canaduh 🇨🇦, we feel your pain and frustration over here as well. Getting squeezed for every penny we make. Keep moving forward mate, by any means necessary 💯 Liked and sub'd 👍👍👍

@smithbuilt No problem Sir! The bunker doors look spot on too!!
I’ve got some frost damaged bricks in my garden wall and that is why I was here to look at this particular tool. The video seems to suggest it would be ideal for removing the mortar, but not much else. May consider buying one to compare it against the other tools that I’ve got for removing mortar e.g. mortar rake for the angle grinder and also a mortar rake for the hammer drill, with the latter obviously only being on hammer action.
Yeah it's great for mortar removal but it can't cut blocks too good
Are you going to repair it yourself Shane or get it repaired by someone? Or, would another gearbox be the way to go mate? There's always something mate, my van cost £3700 to get sorted last week : (
I'm not sure. I've got a lot on the go and lined up, waiting to get going. I don't know if I want to add to the list. But if I could get the bearing, I'd just pull the gearbox and rebuild the diff. It's only a little one, not like the diffs I've rebuilt on my delicas them things are heavy and a fair amount of work just to get out from under the car. It's half a days work to get this out and swap it. I'll see I'm not that in love with this car, not like my delicas
@@smithbuilt Yeah, it's worse if you're not that happy with something Shane...do what brings the least stress into your life mate.
@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN you're van sounds like stress mate. What on earth did ya break to cost that much?
@@smithbuilt The head gasket blew, then a crack was found in the head itself when tested under pressure, new head plus skimmed, valve work, new timing belt and water pump, a slight modification to the new head, oil, oil filter, coolant, diesel leak fixed and new glow plugs and a new battery. That's about the most of it. Garage prices ain't cheap mate, I was so close to scrapping it tbh. I trust that garage more than others I've been to in the past, so I'm hoping all is good, they've been good in the past (prices edging on the higher end at times but not always) and other folk wait for work from them as going elsewhere can be dodgy.
@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN after my poor experience the first time I ever let a garage touch my car. I'm now completely convinced I can't trust people. Atleast you have a team you can trust. Sounds like you did a number on you're van
dual mass flywheel
It can't be the fly wheel as it would do it all the time and not only when the near side wheel is raised and spun while being driven in gear. Put the near side wheel down and lift the off side and do the same and it's silent
Hi Shane, great vid mate. Couldn't hep but notice the battery, what size, CCA, brand are you running there? And has that freed up enough space to do a fuel filter change with out having to remove the battery too?... Also wondering if you would do a vid on how to do a major/full coolant system flush and how to bleed properly too? I like the bleed tap you installed as well, very nice touch!
I think CCA is 1100 and it's a 125ah. Can't remember the make. Yes you can swap out the filter with it in place. You might get sore knuckles but you can do it. If I find myself filming next time I need to bleed the system I'll get it on film
@@smithbuiltthanks for the reply! And that’s great info for when I need to replace my batteries down the track. I’ll look into an option like yours. It just seems more practical . Thanks. And look forward to seeing more Delica how too vids also regarding maintenance etc and common issues. There’s not a lot of vids on it… Cheers!
Decent video man
Thanks, I'm still getting used to how to edit stuff ect
@@smithbuilt nope, great video straight to the point no bullsh1t, best of luck with channel from an Irish brickie
Thank you. Your video help me a lot to do the job diy. ❤ Any way I struggle a bit to get the steering rack down. But managed to do it. ❤️ From Sri Lanka. ☺️
You're very welcome
I really appreciate you posting your work on the Delica as you go. There isn't a ton of info on these and you make the jobs reasonable with your approach. Thank you for taking the time!
You're very welcome. It's nice to know people appreciate it. Makes it worth the effort of filming it all
didn't you use gasket shellac on the gasket?
No, I just put it on. The manual I use made no mention of it being needed plus there was no evidence of it being used before. I imagine you can use it if it makes you feel better but it's been fine
Great video, did you have to replace the head or only the gasket ?
Just the gasket, I took the head to be pressure tested after I had checked for flatness on my surface plate just to be sure. Thanks for watching I'm glad you liked it
@@smithbuiltbetween this video and the second one, you cleaned the bloke and left it ready to put the new gasket, would you mind telling me how did you clean ?
How much did you pay for the kit ? Head and head gasket ?
I think I did say how much in the video but it was around £60 i think for the gasket kit. The head was my original one I just had it pressure tested to be sure it was good and that was about £40 from memory
is there anything else you recommend checking or proactively replacing at the same time you are doing the timing chain? while it is convenient? Awesome series of videos - removal, cleaning and reinstalling.
Yeah, replacing the timing chain would be a good idea, but, I my opinion, it's best to remove the front cover to do so. I was told you can split the old chain and join it to the new one and pull it through but, I feel there is far to much opportunity for something to go wrong. So I'd remove the bumper, grill, radiators ect then take the timing cover off. You can leave the engine in place and not move the timing and not risk any unforseen issues you might cause you're self. Thanks for watching BTW
In fairness, this blade is for softer blocks and easily cut through them to give a clean edge.
It did say on the pack its for concrete blocks ect. But I think softer blocks would be where this blade works best. It's also great for removing mortar around a single brick if you need to remove it
I love the idea I might build one but what kind of crap is going in your lungs right now?
That was only a quick test with my welding extraction turned off for the video. I moved on from this very soon after to far more nicer designs. Thanks for watching
We import thousands of tons of stainless steel and aluminium but have you ever seen how they melt it all down? The Indians and Pakistanis that we import from make the smokiest burners you could ever come across! Our burners you can't even see smoke and if you get a blue flame burner pretty much zero soot :)
SIR, CAN U TEACH ME HOW 2 DO DAT?
Probably could
Add pure silica it will turn into silica oxide and you will get more aluminium
Will give it a try if I manage to come across any
Thanks for taking the time to make this. It'll save me all kinds of trouble and looks more possible to manage seeing you do it step by step
You're very welcome, thanks for watching it

you need more air, putting that pipe on the air intake created a venturi affect, helping to suck air in, drill a few more holes, or make that one bigger /adjustable. beeing a 2 year old video, im probably going to find a video on your channel sorting it all out, good design, hard to find natural waste oil burner videos on youtube that actually show them beeing built. keep it up.
Thanks for watching. I'll give that a try when I'm back up and running in the new shed

Thank you so much for sharing this very clear and instructional video. Every step is crystal clear. I wish others could do it too. Most of the time they talk a lot and show very little. Thanks again, mate.
You're very welcome
Mate I really enjoyed this it's very real and make a standard half knowledgeable person feel more confident. I love at end "I'll see it I fked up" hahah but looks like you didnt? She worked ok after all that yeh?
Yeah I have like half a clue about what I'm doing most of the time, I typically get away with it. Yep the engine has been fine, granted I broke the transfer case 3.5-4k miles after I did the head 😅, really need to fix that 🤔. I miss having my deli
@@smithbuilt wow I've never heard of a transfer case being broken they are supposed to be weapons of things. Well can't wait to see more videos there are only you and 2 others that post these great videos ! Keep it up the Delica clubs need to see your content it's great! I personally know how to change my steering rack because of you!
Looks great pal. Do you have a link for the gun? 👍🏻
Unfortunately, not mate. I don't know how they work
@@smithbuilt Cheers pal 👍🏻
Cheers shane … inherited my dad’s from his workshop ,, trying it out in the garden making man stuff Your review helped 👍
Still use mine
I have had problems with my oil feed tube clogging up using 1/4 O.D. Tubing and 100% filtered waste oil . Going to at least 3/8 inch tube
I found that it's actually better to keep the feed tube cool to help stop blocking. The heating and cooling just causes crudd to accumulate in the tubes, but the extra heat can help the oil to burn better, it depends on if you're willing to keep cleaning it out vs having to get more heat in the chamber for start up
That's looking decent now Shane, my recommendation would be to get on and start using the workshop and you'll find where things should be once you're using it, you'll probably end up moving stuff around in there anyway. And yeah, the 1st law of sheds - no matter how big it is it ain't big enough :-) I like your tooling cabinets, I'm on the look out for some like that as well, at the moment I'm using old metal filing cabinets that I got off FB marketplace for next to nothing
I had all my tooling in little metal Bisley draw sets, I found the 5 draw sets best as the taller sets tend to bow out and start to drop the draws, my new draws came from a local military contractors factory they were throwing them and there contents away into skips, a friend saved a dozen or so including huge amounts of tooling and he gave me these 2 as he ran out of room... I am absolutely delighted with them, only downside. I wish I had another one 😕
@@smithbuilt I got some of those Bisley drawer units as well, they're OK but not ideal. You did well with the ex-military cabs, jammy sod
I seem to have a gift of some kind but if can be a curse too as I often find my self trying to bite off more then I can chew simply because opportunity has presented but, it makes for fast thinking 🤔
Rather than move machines maybe make a scale plan and move around bits of cardboard until you like it.
Now, that would be awesome, but I'm either too lazy or impatient to make one, lol 😆 I think I'm almost there with the layout side of things. I'm just getting hung up working out where to put all the small things
Mind your toes mate, looks amazing
That foot is still tender if you push where the pallet truck stopped. Good to see you got the go-ahead on you're build mate
Organise it roughly and start using it! Then you will find the right place for everything, its the only way that works for me!
Yeah that's kinda what I've been thinking. It's funny I spends hours sorting things but nothing looks different, I guess that's the best thing about setting up over a course of years, you just don't notice the amount of stuff growing as its gradual
Hey up Shane, what size is the workshop? Looks decent for the UK tbh
I'm gonna call it a medium size lol. Its 10x6 meters but I got permission to build it out another 4 meters so you know in a year or two once I'm settled and all up together I'll have start to make it a 10x10 meter shed , nothing compared to my friend a few miles away he has a 10x40 meter shed but he's a farmer and calls it a barn..... maybe I need to get me some cows
Wow mate thats massive, you could be pretty productive with what you got. Plot must be massive. I cant wait to see it churning out some projects. Very come by a colchester chipmaster great price and a union pedestal grinder both 3 phase you gotta any videos about that?
@mikebryan544 my Colchester needs a strip down. I got it from a dealer who took it in part, ex. I've had a fair few issues pop up over the years with it, but I just did what was needed to keep it going as I didn't have the space to pull it all apart. So that's a job on my to do list. My union tool and cutter grinder is a similar thing. I got it in as is condition and just made use of it my biggest problem with the grinder is the head is just a frankenfitted bench grinder motor, I've always wanted to make a proper mounted pulley and spindel with a separate motor. There's just so many things I need to do and now have the space to do it! I'm bitting at the bitt every day wanting to get up and running again... I'm looking at for a mk2 roundhead triumph lathe long bed, I found my student lathe a little small and I know a master will end up to small for something so I figured a long bed triumph would be perfect, I do like the old chipmasters that triangular shape is interesting
@smithbuilt you’ll get to the jobs in time. yeah triumph would be the size of choice with the space. Interesting the chipmaster seems to be thought of as a fully rigid toolroom standard lathe but not much bigger foot print than myford. Thats why i went for it, ideal shed size, just looking for a 4 jaw for it as nothing came with it.
Always a shame when you don't get the standard extras with a machine, I had a ml4 lathe awhile back, I sold it as it was worth more then my student lathe.....crazy expensive little lathes myford but the chipmaster will serve well
I’m a Scottish back packer broken down in Albury Australia and I’m attempting this today in a motel car park
Long way way from home, best of luck
How was the repair, it runs well? I hope you made it
Did you do it ?
Hi Shane welcome back good to see you working on workshop nicely done i was wondering why couldnt you get forancent light instead of chinese made LED, i bought 10 forancent light for 70 dollar on FB with bulbs lol
Hi Matt, yeah, I had looked on the fb marketplace, but nothing came up after a few weeks of looking, so I thought I'd buy new. You should see the shop now, I've been at it everyday moving everything into place and trying to find an ideal layout to start out with and try to fine tune once I've had time to work in there.... It's so much harder than I thought it would be, especially as I keep changing my mind or coming up with a new idea
