Hi, I'm Simon, a photographer from the UK and I'm here to share some of the things I've learnt behind the camera.

Is it possible to hook up the F3 with an iPhone 15 Pro?
I've been using the F3 as a remote recorder. I have 2 Rode M5s on a stand plugged into the F3. Then plug in an audio splitter into the F3 output. Each split, is plugged into a Rode Go II transmitter. On the camera, the Rode Go II receiver is plugged into the Mic port which then gets the left/right audio track. On the stand with the 2 mics and the F3 and Rode Go II transmitters, I have a sony NPF battery plate (smallrig) which provides additional power to each device via USB-C. I put the whole recording rig on smallrig rails and attach it to the base of the mic stand. The mic stand can then be placed anywhere and there there are no wires to contend with. Once set up, I start the recording on the F3 and match it up later.

Thanks for the information. Amazon has a deal today. F3 for $218. Picking one up!
Oh nice find! 🤑
Don't use any audio going in your camera. Camera is AWFUL in terms of audio. Stick with Zoom F3.
Hi! thanks for the video! I have a question, I didn't understand how you can record via the FX3 and in sinc with the video....is it possible?
It depends on what editor you use, but most can do it automatically these days. Failing that, clap loudly with your hands visible in camera and you will be able to sync the waveforms manually with the big spike.
i found it odd that the first 17-18 seconds were sounding great and then all the audio afterwards sounded clipped and overly distorted. is it the same audio file but you just cranked the gain or were they 2 separate audio sources?
Thankyou
Few months and it will come off, leaving ugly adhesive
Not if you do it right 😉 12 months on and still looking fresh!
Is this also possible with the f6
the audio on this video is terrible, it's just awful in the worst way possible-muddy, crackly. I just hope it's your bad adapters and not the Zoom F3
What happens if you plug in two microphones into the F3? Which channel would go out into the camera? Or is it both basically turning it into a stereo clip?
As I understand it one mic goes to the left channel and the other to right so you can either combine them or choose one over the other in post. Hope that helps.
@@SimonPow definitely. And thank you
Very concise and useful information. Like your analogies to describe settings and how to set the camera when patching the audio to the camera. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! 👍
On newer Sony cameras (A7siii and A7iv) you want the audio levels at 3 rather than 1 as it can stop random static/noise from being added by the camera.
Loving the fly along Question did you do anything special to waterproof the electronics?
The Avata is pretty well covered. Water on the lens is the bigger issue. On a self built FPV drone though, conformal coating on your electronics is the way to go.
100% agree. The Zoom F3 was a complete game-changer for me. I used to use a small Tascam DR-10 to record the mic feed from events, and often I'd have to plug it into the XLR at the back of one of the speakers. More often than not, I'd end up with massively peaking audio that was totally distorted and unusable--even if I selected the "dual recording" function which gave me a parallel recording with a smaller signal. Now, when I plug in my Zoom F3, it doesn't even matter. I can import the recorded file into Audition and get perfect levels every time. Mind blown.
If I’m recording at a desk, can I use the USB-C and plug into the wall so I don’t have to monitor battery levels?
Yes you can. I’ve done exactly that multiple times.
Nice work mate!
Sorry for my question but when you plug your XLR mic into the F3 and get out with 3,5 jack to the camera and have to adjust the gain in the camera, the 32 bits doesn´t change a thing for the camera recording correct? So the f3 only serves as a XLR to 3,5 jack converter, what is then the purpose? (appart of having internal recording in 32 bits of course in the zoom f3) Does the F3 make the sound better than if I would connect directly a mic to the camera in 3,5?
HI. The idea is you turn down the gain in your camera as low as possible as the F3 has a better pre-amp. Then the zoom controls on the F3 change the output level as well as the image on the screen. Hope that helps.
@@SimonPow yes so the f3 gives much better preamp meaning less noise in the sound and enable to give phantom power to any XLR mics. it helps.
You should get Citroen ami instead
After this Video I bought a DJI RS3 Mini but after 2 hours of trying to balance the camera and maxing out everything I could, it was not working for me. My R5 24-70 f3.8 was too big :(
what else would you reccomend? im tryiing to find a good gimbal
This is one of the best videographer EDC tool I've seen. Really appreciate what Peter came up with despite the exorbitant price.
Now again, without the ANNOYING music.
You should get a Citroen Ami instead
Cool explanation, thanks 👍😎
jajaja🌏🏜
Something didn't render correctly because there's a lot of clipping in your video itself. It might be the camera's preamps are clipping but your F3 isn't. I also think your audio would sound much better if you bring the shotgun mic closer to you, no further than a forearm away.
Simon, well done overview of F3. You hit all the major features. Thanks.
wtf dude xD Your audio in this video is shitty, i hear clipping
Che peccato lalgoritmo di youtube!!! Video incredibilmente bello e dettagliato e solo 300 view😢
Hyfryd!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
you are just not a good drone pilot and fly completely wrong and bad
😂🤣
Good video
this sounds really bad. lots of poping/clipping
My approach is to use F3 as the MAIN audio track and then use the F3 line out / in camera as the backup.
That's the best way to do it. When you connect F3 to Camera line in you are downgrading the sound to 16-bit, it's like reducing the dynamic range of the sound. And with 16-bit you also lose the abillity to change the gain after.
Thanks so much. This is how I plan to use the F3 which arrives soon. I know you can adjust output levels in the menu as well. Did you fuss with that at all?
Can I link it through USB out of my camera and hit record on my camera and the Zoom recorder automatically starts recording? Can I stop and start the recording on the zoom recorder from my camera?
What about R5 + RF 85 1.2? It’s like 150g heavier but a little shorter
Did you ever figure out the clipping issue? I just got the f3 and I think I'm going to return it. I'm using the line out jack to connect to a camera and the audio always comes out clipped. I could lower the output gain further but that would mean adding gain from the internal camera preamps which defeats the purpose of purchasing the zoom. My old preamp outputs to the camera perfectly without clipping and sounds fantastic. So unless someone knows something that I don't then I have to return the zoom f3. And yes I could record the clips and sync in post but that adds extra complexity that I don't need at the moment.
It doesn’t record 32 bit into the camera that’s why
my first RS3 mini was clearly defective. it broke with an R+24-105 f4 during a wedding lol
LOLOLOL GOMATIC
Very helpful, thanks!
Its quite a feat to create a video about a recorder thats virtually impossible to clip the audio from, with clipped audio 😂
you lost me with bad info. you can plug in XLR on all sony cameras with the intelligent hotshoe K2m or K3m xlr adapter.
So basically you are using a wonderful 300€/$ 32bit float audio recorder as a backup for a crappy 16bit compressed audio, because you are too lazy to sync. This video has so bad audio that this alone should convince you not to use your camera to record it.
This seems perfect except I wish it allowed for four channel mixing.
Laughed at the injured hand joke as intro, well done
Sorry, but your audio has small, yet audible distortions when listening via headphones. Also in this setup F3 acts only as a 300$ backup and you edit 16-bit audio largely compressed with camera codec.
