Wow, what a story. Kratom obviously warrants a closer look. This is no doubt a big issue that's been covered by National Public Radio, and countless talk shows, etc. I've had friends go through surgery, and even during a bad kidney stone episode I was prescribed opiates. It doesn't take long before you're needing higher and higher dosage to control the pain. And Dentist and so forth are giving them out like candy. I've talked to a few people who came very close to being addicted before having the self-control to stop. I too have degenerative disc disease, and four herniation's in my low back. I just refused to go on the opiates, although I've tried just about everything else from chiropractic care, osteopathic manipulations, traction, massage, steroid injections, muscle relaxants, etc. And while they all help to some degree, the pain is still always there, and it's pretty limiting particularly as I've gotten older. I think along with pain tends to go depression and anxiety. You get depressed over things you can't do or go through "what if" scenarios if you try to do something that may make things a lot worse. For me one good example is a long international flight. Sitting for an extended period with a bad back is excruciating, and I have to confess to taking a few opiates just to manage the pain in that instance. Sometimes I go to a benzodiazepine, like Xanax, which will relax the muscles and then a high dose of Advil for the pain. The anxiety over potential problems is always there. I've just learned about Kratom, and if there's something that could ease anxiety and depression and take care of the pain with virtually no side effects, then sounds like something I would want to try. I also understand if you start taking too much you can end up getting sick, so in a sense it's self-regulating. I guess the problem really gets down to people's ability to be responsible. Any substance has the potential to be abused, particularly one that can make you feel a lot better. I guess there's always going to be the people who do abuse this herb, and there's gonna be a certain number of cases where people die. About the only thing I'd really like to see is some control as to the potency and then some dosage recommendation. This is a big issue with herbal supplements in general. You really have no idea if you're getting good quality or bad quality, and how much you should take, what you can mix things with, etc. I'm not sure what the answer is here. Perhaps just a warning label for now, and some kind of dosage recommendation, like start with a half gram and see what happens. And something along the lines of higher dosages will cause stomach upset and sedation. And lastly, abuse of Kratom can cause death or cardiac failure. I don't think that would be out of line. Biggest problem is lack of education, and addictive type personalities, where people get the idea if a little bit is good then more should be better. John Q public can be pretty stupid, and that's given this herb a bad rap.

My story is much the same! I was on opiates (everything from tramadol to fentanyl to Xanax) for 25 years, 16 months ago I decided to try kratom to get off of tramadol, the kratom covered 95 percent of the withdrawals. My depression, insomnia, anxiety and pain is all controlled by kratom. I will never go back on the garbage that I have been addicted to in the past

I hated subs and stayed on them just to feel normal terrified of the depression that comes w withdrawal, kratom takes the edge off to where my withdrawal is tolerable I should add practicing positive thinking has been key for me as well
