Keeping Finches - Beginner Basics - my morning feed routine
Переглядів 26 тис.7 років тому
A few people have asked what I feed my finches (in addition to dry seed). This is a short run through my morning feeding routine. I included a quick technique for soaking/sprouting seed also. Happy finching 👍 I am relatively new to finch keeping but am always keen for new ideas and better practice so feel free to comment ✌🐦 P.S. I completely forgot to put green seed in the dish this particular ...
how do you keep black ants out of the bin that you have stored the nest in
Cool thanks mate
Thank you for the very useful video! Loved watching it. How often do you have to clean or replace the sand?
Great video.
Thanks Mike 👍🏽
Hey, I have a question. I am making a bird house that is 14 feet long and 10 feet deep. So, is a 10 feet height ok? It will be a room and I will keep the birds in cages inside there. So, I need help with the seed mix. There are many seed mixes that I saw, but like I am going to spend 250-300 taka per kg of food for them. I want the base to be canary seeds and white millet which will 5kg of canary seeds and 5kg white millet, but I want the whole seed mix to be around 15kg, so what else should I add and how much? I will not add foxtail millet or proso millet or paddy. So I need to know what other millets to add and how much. Also how much Niger seeds should I add to keep them warm in winter. Please let me know about these. Thanks a lot! I know a person who breeds finches, I will take them from him and he feeds them a 50-50 ratio of canary seed and white millet, I will use that as my base but I want to add a few more millets for variety. He breeds exhibition size finches which is why he uses this seed mix. And price is not a problem for me, I can spend upto 350tk per kilo of food, so what other types of millets should I add to make it better? I gave the 10kg base which is 5kg white millet and 5kg canary seed, I just need the extra 5kg of millets and other seeds. Please let me know. This 15kg will be the overall base and I will add Niger seeds when needed (mostly during winter). Please reply. Please let me know. Thanks!
Thank you so much, we were so confused about November grass but your explanation was perfect! 👍🏻
You are welcome! Now is the time to get some!!
Thank you. We don't have termites over here 😂
No, not many bugs at all I heard…?
Excellent video. I would love some zebra finches but I'm a total newbie. Did you know New Zealand has sea snakes? I never knew until last week lol
Zebras are a beautiful finch but can be skittish and disruptive in a mixed collection ☺️ I didn’t know that you had sea snakes 🐍
Great clip, quick, simple and informative. At times you can see November grass clumped in huge windblown masses along fence lines
Yes, makes for easy picking also!!
You giving advice but you start off by not having a safety porch so that when you walk in the birds can fly out... yeah great advice mate hope people follow in your mistakes
This is a common and conventional aviary - but not perfect. Safety flights are ideal and I think I may have mentioned that this was a vulnerability in the video. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. I hope that you found some of it helpful.
What's the name of the disinfectant?
Apologies for the tardy response. Vircon S is the disinfectant. Alternatively some use a small splash of household bleach.
THANK GOD A NORMAL EDUCATIONAL VIDEO!! THANK YOU !!!!
Legend! Thanks for the comment. Keep it simple hey
you need a security door you will lose some if you dont have a saftey door. i think theres a lot of videos out there teaching people how to set up aviary but they either dont have extra door or they dont stress how important it is to have. beginners need to realise it is not something you should leave for another day getting too excited rushing to get your first aviary set up. its not worth the risk for another half hour or so work. your birds will not survive in the wild if they escape. its not just weather its other predators and more
re watched till the last bit and saw it was mentioned a little more
Yes, I agree, an often overlooked vulnerability of conventional aviaries.
is your wire mesh stainless or galvanized
Hi Jordan, it was galvanised. Stainless wire mesh is not common here in Australia.
you really look after your birds 💯👍
Thanks, happy birds are rewarding in their own behaviour also
I have enjoyed your video. Very informative. Thanks
Thanks for your comment
I am sorry, but your advise about the longer seeds loosing nutritional value is incorrect. Please do a bit more research on the net about that. Sprouted seeds are NORE nutritious than soaked seeds by a long way. Obviously, they will loose their nutritional value if you leave them too long so they start getting leaves etc.
I will certainly do some more reading. I agree though was saying that a ‘just sprouted’ (aka chitted) sprout is at its max nutritional content. The longer the sprout after that, the less nutritional content. Mike Fidler provided this advice to me. Happy to stand corrected
Thanks for a few very good ideas. I'm located in Dallas, Texas, US and I feel we have similar temperatures. But someone recently told me that finches are tropical and don't handle the cold well. Any advice? I'm still in the process of acquiring the material to build an outdoor aviary.
I think it would depend largely on the strength of the birds in aviculture in your area, but someone once told me “cold won’t kill birds itself, a draught will”. Meaning, provide sufficient shelter with perches for the birds to get out of cool draughts. We have many southern states in Qld that get snow covered outdoor aviaries at times with minimal losses with these provisions. Good luck
Like the water tip thanks I am building mine and will use your ideas.
How did you go?
Hi could you please spell out the name of that antibacterial that you put in the seed? I'm American and I didn't understand your accent thank you. Thank you for making the video it's very helpful.

Hey mate fantastic set up! By any chance. What are the dimensions of your aviary?
Apologies for the tardy response. This aviary was about 3m long and 1.5m deep
Awesome video brother I enjoyed it very much. What do you feed them during breeding season! 👍
This is the breeding season diet. Austerity diet would just be dry seed mix and water
Looks really good mate 👍
Zeus Canine thanks mate ✌🏼 I introduced some birds to it this morning. Very happy!
thx nice vid i have a channle that you can look at if you want
Where do you get termites from? Can you substitute another live bait from the pet store?
Toko Eveland where I live in South East Queensland (Australia) there are lots of termite mounds around. I only take part of a mound that allows the mother mound to repair itself. you could purchase mini meal worms and crickets from a pet store. You could also encourage fruit fly by putting a bucket of fruit inside your enclosure. Many people here in Australia breed bush fly maggots using a system of a purpose built fly box (a cabinet with a heat/light source inside. Full of flys. And rotate punnets of a moist bran and milk powder mix through the box. The flys will lay their eggs in the mix and then when they develop into maggots and pupa they can be fed out to finches as a source of live food.
Excellent, Informative Video.
Thanks heaps
Thanks T Rigger great vid, very helpful .
Cheers
some of the luckiest finches you got living in your quarters! : )
Thanks mate
It seems to me, that all finches should be in a large aviary and not just a bird cage/house; even if it's big. I think all bird custodians ought to be working toward creating a good aviary within a time frame. It's ideal I know, but it should be mandatory.
Lacy McDuffie I agree with you. Finches, being small birds, are often put in small enclosures. This ais a misunderstanding of their requirements. Unfortunately, many Pet outlets will advise people incorrectly. In my opinion and experience, Finches are at their happiest if kept in a large, well thought out aviary with at least 1 square meter of space per pair.
The majority of animals seem to like space but most finches just need time and space to fly. Those who breed them seem to concur on the fact they can be kept in enclosures. Not too small of course.
