Hi! I hope you're all well. In today's video, I take an in-depth look at one of my favourite film cameras, the Nikon F301. This is my "carry everywhere" camera, and uses the same lenses as my much beefier, much more feature packed, but crucially, much heavier Nikon F5. What do you look for in a camera? Very nice review. I also have this camera, given to me by my father in law. It’s a very well made and robust camera. Once I cleaned up the battery compartment (30 odd years of battery leakage) and inserted new ones, it worked like a dream. It’s biggest oddity is that it doesn’t auto rewind the film. It really was a camera in transition, but a very fine one. 👌🙏

    The prism is the best thing about it. Put a good lens on it and the pictures will look as good as anything shot with the Nikon F.

    I bought one and was so pleased with it I bought another as a back-up. Light and feature packed, great for hiking. My first F80 also produced intermittent Err messages. I tracked this down to the DX coding. If I manually set the ISO I don't get any error messages. Also the back door closing mechanism is prone to breaking but WHEN this happens just use a bit of gaffer tape to keep the door closed while there is film in. I paid £30 each for my cameras; worth every penny. I have an F90x too but I wouldn't take it on a hike as it's far too heavy for my 67 year old legs.

    Brilliant. I love the 28mm f1.4D but I wanna add the 35mm f2D as well They're the perfect indoors close area lens to let you be part of the scene at the table w/ minimal dist5ortion. I've gone back to using my 50mm f1.4D again along the 85mm f1.4D

      Calibration by using focus compensation for a particular lens to correct for front or back focusing issues. Makes hell of a difference and you can do it easily either manually or digitally . I use reikan fo-cal and it works a treat for primes. Zooms are another case altogether

    hi james what would u say was a step up from the f80 as a more modern video camera

    • @nermalator
      @nermalator 3 роки тому

      Sorry, I’m not quite sure of the question, do you mean video as in movies? Or as in film, which is used for the word video from time to time? If you mean video, any of the Nikon DSLR’s that shoot video will have a similar feel to the F80, but Nikon aren’t renowned for Video in their DSLR’s. If you mean film, the F80 is pretty much as modern as it gets when it comes to 35mm film cameras. From this, essentially your only upgrades are things like the F5, F6 or F100, or equivalents from Canon. The only “downsides” of the F80 really are the 97% (I think) viewfinder coverage vs the 100% in the F5, F6 and F100, and the maximum shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second, instead of 1/8000th. The only other point to note, is since making this review, the plastic clips on the back of the film door snapped off, so I have since upgraded, and would advise caution when opening and closing the door. Being honest, with the F5, F6 and F100, they are definitely upgrades and in completely different leagues to the F80. The F5 is by far the most affordable of the 3 in the UK, but weighs a tonne and is by no means an “everyday” camera. The F6 will cost you a small deposit on a car, and the F100, the closest to the F80 is a similar size, but all metal build, and you will struggle to get one for less than £250 in the UK. Hope this helps

    Several of the F80's that I have bought have had the ERR message where the camera locks up sometimes wasting as you said 2 frames, it doesn't always happen and for the money it's worth taking the risk, let's face it, it's the greatest bargain in film photography at less than €20. I have 3, 1 for slide, 1 for BW and one for colour. They can use nearly every F mount Nikon lens except the modern AFP lenses. Get the grip and it looks like an F5. If you get the cool data film back it can imprint exposure details between the frames.

    Thanks for the feedback on the F80. Picked up a Samsung Note 9 phone for the better (Unlocked NIB 45% off retail) for the better camera and used it on recent family vacation. Found that I took ssssoooo many photos in auto mode. Many are very nice (tech is cool that way), but +80% came from me trying to get lucky getting a pick of my family. Thinking about phone for point and shoot and film for pics of loved ones. All the "beginner/budget" videos point to late 70's/early 80's Nikon/Canon/Minolta SLR. For the price, the F/N80s seem to make so much more sense. It feels like film SLR like a used good conidition F80 offer a great quality film camera at a very reasonable price. Any thoughts on a first lens for the F80? Cheers!

    • @nermalator
      @nermalator 5 років тому

      Hey John! Yeah, I’ve gone down the route of vintage film cameras, and whilst great to learn on, it can be such a hassle if all you want to do is snap. I’d always recommend the Nikon nifty fifty, I picked mine up for £50, but if you want something more versatile with zoom, you can normally pick up one of their film kit lenses for around £30-50. Another good option is buying something like an F50 or F65 kit with the lens. You can normally get those pretty cheap and sell the body on. I managed to get a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 for £100, before trading in my old Olympus gear, if you keep scouring, you can get some great lenses for Nikon film cameras, that will work if you decided to get a Nikon DSLR as well (model depending)
