Walking alone, or with friends, and rambling on regardless
Gritstone Trail with @ramblingwoman Day 3: Rushton Spencer to Kidsgrove
Gritstone Trail with @ramblingwoman Day 3: Rushton Spencer to Kidsgrove including The Cloud, the Old Man of Mow and the Macclesfield Canal
Walked 20 May 2023
'Don't fence me in' composed by Cole Porter
The Gritstone Trail, or Cheshire Gritstone Trail, follows the westerly hills of the Peak District from Disley Station to Mow Cop, and on via the Macclesfield Canal to Kidsgrove Station.
The Trail is close to centres of high population, such as Manchester and Birmingham. However it is very much a rural trail, offering a mix of fields, hills, disused railway lines and canal paths. It connects destinations which are popular as ‘stand alone’ day trips: Lymne Park, White Nancy, Tegg’s Nose and The Cloud. Consequently it is ideal as a trail to be undertaken as a series of single days, or walked over 2-3 consecutive days. Finally, the Trail has almost 6,000ft of ascent, so demands a fair amount of leg power and breath control.
I walked the Trail with a friend in the Spring of 2023. Originally I saw it as a good excuse to spend time with a walking buddy of many decades, and to get in some training as I prepared to walk the Coast to Coast path. It turned out to be a fantastic walk. It was far more demanding than I’d expected, the scenery was beautiful, and it was wonderful discovering a new part of England. Yet again, I’ve realised that I actually know very little of the British Isles, despite having lived here my whole life. And yet again, I’ve been reminded of what a stunningly beautiful place it is.
I hope you enjoy this series of videos.

Thank you for sharing. Walked the WHW last year, such a beautiful trail
Very nice my girlfriend lived there, so it became my weekend retreat. You could of put a wind muffler on the microphone, it's plays havoc with my tinnitus.
Sorry about that. The phone I used didn't have a buffer. Hope the happy memories went some way towards making up for the discomfort
Thoroughly enjoyed the journey👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you get to do it yourself one day
@@ramblingwoman very soon I hope 👋
I have been trying to find the ferry Water taxi or cruise trip over to Tarbet from Rowardennan. No luck today April 2024. Can you offer me any tips on this. I want to go from Tarbet to Inversnaid by ferry or water taxi also.
So sorry I've only just read this. I caught the ferry from Inversnaid, not sure about the service from Rowardennan. Hope you got sorted in the end.
Thanks for posting these three videos. I really enjoyed watching them and reliving my walk on the trail with my brother in September 2020 (in a lull in lockdowns). We took it steady and did it in four days to make sure we had enough breaks for a pint. There are actually three pubs near the end The Railway that you went to, Canal Tavern that we went to and the Blue Bell Inn opposite the Canal Tavern by the lock on your left (slightly behind you) at the canal junction near the end.
Glad you like them! I really enjoyed the walk. And thanks for the info on pubs at the end .... an essential part of any long-distance trail!
The piece of public art that you passed by at the bottom of Aislaby is an otter. It was placed there to celebrate the return of otters to the Tees.
Thanks for that. I've managed to find out more about the sculptures since I walked the Trail, but didn't know the significance of otters returning to the Tees. It's a beautiful river.
Last video was really great! Just beautiful views!! Well done! I feel like we are now friends! Thanks!!
Thanks and welcome. Remember, the only way to do the walk is the way that suits you. Having a day off or doing a section by bus still results in a wonderful experience in a beautiful part of the world. Just walk at your own pace and take one day at a time x
Thanks for all you positive input. You are showing me the way! Thanks!
Always!
Love your account and tip on this section!
Thanks so much!
Fantastic account of your adventures. I am encouraged and hopeful I can make it in this next trip this summer!
This is exactly what I want to do! Take the upper route and then take the ferry over for a few days!
Rewatching your WHW walk! I plan on giving it another go in June 2024!
Glad to hear this. Walk at your own pace and just enjoy every minute. Good luck x
Love the Teesdale way everytime I return home to middlesbrough I do a section, having completed it as a teenager. . Thanks for sharing Martin
So glad you enjoyed. I'm not from this area, so it was all a wonderful discovery. One of the best long distance trails: variety, challenges and breathtakingly beautiful
Great video and good commentary, I love Saltburn, Skinningrove and Staithes! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! I walked from Saltburn to Staithes yesterday and it was a total mud-fest, but still beautiful
I can imagine 😂
My part of the world. Seen it, been there, done it many a time. Glad you enjoyed! Take Care. 😉
I had a fantastic day. Not sure whether to be sad it's not better known, or glad it's not crowded. Will definitely be back
Well done! Loved these videos. And good luck for the C2C. 🤞🏻🥾
Thank you. I actually did the C2C in July, east to west. It was absolutely glorious, though very wet in the Lakes (as usual). Hoping to start the Pennine Way next spring.
@@ramblingwoman 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 fantastic!
Nice to see you back on the videos. Really enjoy them and the presenting style.
Much appreciated! Thank you
Hi Mary, lovely to meet you today on the Moorsbus from Guisborough. I hope you enjoyed your walk from Clay Bank. This video reminds me of last Sunday and the one before, when I was in the area. Take care, and hope to see you again sometime!
Lovely to meet you too. I had a fantastic walk, made better by the heather being in full bloom. I love the Moors! Take care of your hand, and happy walking
Thank you so much for this series of videos. Just spent a Sunday afternoon watching them all. Thinking of doing the Weardale and Teesdale Ways myself at some point. Well done on getting it done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻🥾
Thank you. I'm so glad you enjoyed watching. I know I ramble on while rambling on, but taking the videos makes me stop and look around. The Teesdale Way was a far more beautiful and more challenging walk than I'd ever anticipated. It's definitely given me a taste for river walking and the Weardale trail is now on my 'to do' list too
Ive just done my stage 3 from Kildale to Saltburn. i think the really tough day from Osmotherley to Kildale was worth it so that I could start the day with the climb out of Kildale insteadof it immediately foĺlowing the long descent into Kildale. I reallylike your vids.just a lovely presentation style
Thank you so much, and sorry fir not replying sooner. You'll find the Coast tough with all the ups and downs, but I live in the area and nothing gets my knees like that descent into Kildale. And I agree, walking poles are essential for me. I think they're probably saving my joints enough to give them an extra 10 years of walking. Good luck with the rest of the trail
@@ramblingwoman finished the coastal part yesterday. Think I enjoyed the stage from Robin Hoods Bay to Scarborough the most. Hayburn Wyke .what a beautiful spot with the waterfall. Was watching your vids on the bus to start point to give me a reminder. My vids still in production!
Watched your Cleveland Way videos before but watching them again now that Ive done from Helmsley to Kildale over 2 days. Not put day 2 on you tube yet but boy was it a tough 21 miles. The descents are so tough with dodgy knees. I think walking poles are one of the best investments Ive made recently. Couldnt do day 3 to Saltburn due to a combination of logistics and a massive blister on each foot. Not enough grassy areas for walking .lot of hard surfaces.
Really enjoyed following your journey. We are hoping to walk it sometime this year so found it very informative. Thank you & happy walking!
Really glad to hear you enjoyed it. It's not one of the most popular routes, but I really enjoyed it. Loads of variety, lots of interest and a fair few challenges. Happy walking to you too
Like all your trips my favourite places
Mine too. Glad you enjoyed
@@ramblingwoman i like your trips brings back good memories when i used to say in langdon beck hostel
Thanks for including me in this section of your walk. I raised over £750 and got many blisters, but it was worth it!
That's wonderful to hear. It's also good to hear you got to the end safely - there were some tricky sections before Barny, and it was getting dark. If you'd like an edited clip let me know. And well done; it was a pleasure meeting you
had a lovely morning with you, dear one!!!
Sawadee ka good vdo thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching. Happy walking!
Great series. Thanks for giving us your time.
Thanks for watching and for the kind comment. Vlogging has made me slow down and take more notice of the world around me. I'm glad you enjoyed watching and hope it inspires you to walk too
Lovely video again. Really enjoying following your story.
Thank you
Thoroughly enjoy your videos. I really like your presenting style and the accent and its like following someones story. Im back to the Wales coastal path soon and if I wasnt doing videos I think Id find the walking quite lonely but really enjoy talking to myself and the camera/phone. Did a train trip round the Scottish Highlands with walks around the towns which was great fun but took lots of footage so I could practise video editing .subtitles.voice overs.adding music which normally I dont have time to do. So taken a wee bit of inspiration from your vids.
Thank you! You should really give it a go. I find all the editing is a great way to reflect on walks and relive the experience. Ultimately no one has to watch you videos if they don't want to, and people are generally kind and appreciative
Great video of a lovely part of the world. Well done!
Thank you! It was a glorious walk. I'm amazed it's not more popular
Staithes my favourite place in Yorkshire we used to go on holiday there 60 years ago ( from Middlesbrough) my parents always called it steers
We don't live far away from there so visit regularly. My husband met me in the Cod and Lobster when I finished this walk and I had the best sea-food linguine ever. Glad the enjoyed watching
Watched your vids on WHW and Cleveland Way and now the CTC. Ill need to add this one to number 4 on my list after the other 2. My current priority is carrying on with Wales Coastal Path. I do my own vids on you tubecand love watching other folks ones and all the different styles. Everyones journey is different and to me videos inspire other people. Nice one.
So glad to hear you're enjoying them. I'm from Wales and have walked parts of the Coastal path but definitely want to do more. A friend's just finished a complete circumnavigation including Offas Dyke. It's taken the best part of 10 years, but definitely an idea I'd like to follow. Good luck with yours - I'll look out for your vlogs
@@ramblingwoman Ive been to all parts of Wales playing golf and the North East of England. Heading back down to Menai Bridge in next few weeks to do next 2 stages to Caernarfon (my fav town in Wales.especially for the pubs) and then to just short of Trefor. The next part of the Llyn Peninsula is best left for better weather to get the views. Tried first stage of Cleveland Way in 2021..stupidly without a map .got lost on the moors .missed the turn off for Osmotherley and walked nigh on 40 miles to get there. Couldnt move the next day .so coming back this year for it .mixing it un with the golf courses.
@user-nc9sq7vx5o let me know when, we might manage a meet up. And you'll enjoy Pen Llyn because, as you know, Morfa Nefyn has the best golf course in the world, and the Ty Coch Inn in heavenly
@@ramblingwoman I play more golf courses than anyone else in UK .over 200 each of last 2 years but Im in a minority regarding Nefyn. Only missing a clowns face and a windmill lol plus loads of walkers getting in the way. Ill give it another go when Im doing those stages on Llyn Peninsula.
Really enjoying your videos and the style of them. ill await your continuation of this trail. Ill probs never get eound to this one but can I ask why you chose the upstream direction? i think if I was doing a riverside trail Id want to go downstream and finish at the coast Im having a wee break from Wales Coastal Path as I stupidly tried to jump a stream in Anglesey and cracked my ribs on the bank in addition to getting soaked.
I've walked the Anglesey coast path - beautiful but definitely has some challenges 👌 I agree, normally heading for the coast is best. Two reasons for deciding this way: firstly I generally prefer walking away from towns and into the wild - it's why I preferred walking Hadrian's Wall East to West; but more importantly, I live in walking distance of the Tees estuary and so wanted to walk up to where it starts. And now the spoiler alert. The Teesdale Way actually misses the head of the Tees and ends at Dufton. Consequently I'm going to HAVE to walk the Pennine Way sometime soon as the PW continues from Dufton past the head of the Tees. So many walks, life is good 👍
@@ramblingwoman what I think you do in your videos is portraying the enjoyment of the walk as well as providing useful info for those following in your footsteps. I never thought of putting subtitles on mine despite some folk not understanding my Scottish accent. Ive pronounced Llanfairpwll...gogogoch on mine after practising it. I do too many videos with immediate upload so I have minimal editing after from removing those ones where I swear when I forget what Im gonna say. Im going to base myself at Middlesbrough travelodge for first part of Cleveland Way.train down to York .stay 1 night in Osmotherley tjen train from Kildale back to Midd. I worked at Butlins Filey in 1979 and Whitby to Bridlington is my fav part of England so looking forward to that bit .gonna carry on to Bridlington after Filey.
Thats me watched your WHW ones now as well as your Cleveland Way ones. Well done and really enjoyed following your journey. Both these walks are the next two on my list. Fit them in between all the golf courses I play and walking round the Wales Coastal Path. Yours and others videos help me plan what stages to do. Im a b and b and hotels man so much prefer to have a few pints at night than camping .carrying the extra weight of a tent etc would damage my knees. Looking forward to your next adventures.
Just watched all your Cleveland Way ones now. Thank you for your quite lovely videos .thoroughly enjoyed them. Im hoping to do Cleveland Way next year in stages combining it with golf. Im going to finish in Bridlington though as my fav part of England is Whitby down to Bridlington. I worked at Butlins Filey in 1979 so lookimg forward to walking slong the beach there as the camp is long gone. Ive done 14 stages of the Wales Coastal path videoing it. Its great fun as you say trying to take in everything around you and showing off the best bits. Well done.
Just watched the first two of your Cleveland Way ones. I really enjoy watching other folks vids including yours so will catch up on them all. West Highland Way a possibility this year. Tried the first stage of Cleveland Way in 2021 but got lost up on the moors and instead of taking the fork down to Osmotherley I carried on. Ended up walking nigh on 40 miles to Osmotherley and had to give up next day as I couldnt move. Deleted my videos in disgust! Giving it another go in 2023 with guidebook and maps. Especially looking forward to Osmotherley to Kildale section. My main concentration is continuing the Wales Coastal path having just completed round Anglesey. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! I enjoyed this episode and I look forward to the next!
Might not be until after Christmas, but it WILL come eventually
Nice video! What a difference heading away from Stockton.
Like two different worlds, though I really enjoyed all the industrial heritage
@@ramblingwoman Bridges are always very photogenic! I have a few not very good pre-digital photos of some of these bridges, which I look forward to retaking in the not too distant future.
Excellent series of Cleveland Way videos! Many thanks!
Thanks for the lovely feedback. Glad you enjoyed them
Wonderful videos! I've now watched numbers 1 and 2, and look forward to the rest. I have done the Cleveland Way about 30 years ago (except Scarborough to Filey) so I must do it again, perhaps like you, in order but not necessarily consecutive days.
Thanks for the kind feedback. Glad you enjoyed them. I think doing a walk over occasional days has lots of benefits. I enjoy being able to savour an individual stretch rather than things all merging into each other
@@ramblingwoman I agree, it's extremely difficult to recall each individual day after a week or so. If all goes well I'll be living in your area in a couple of months or so, so will have plenty of opportunity to explore, and may even bump into you sometime!
@@randomroveruk6715 it's a great place to be
Very interesting to watch. North East/North West Bloworth? Coins placed as part of an ancient tradition for weary travellers. Keep posting!
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for explaining the coins. There's something wonderful about walking in such isolated areas and seeing ancient traditions still continuing.
Did Osmotherley to Kildale last week .that last 5 miles from Bloworth to Kildale goes on forever. Made my train with 15 mins to spare. Coming back in a couple of w3ks fot Kildale to Saltburn including Roseberry Topping.
Awesome keep on Rambling 🥾 💚
I plan to walk until my legs won't carry me any further
Love your walks. You have inspired me to give the WHY another go but solo next year!
Really glad to hear that - good luck!
Beautiful woman in a beautiful landscape.
Well Done! I’m heading out on the C to C alone in August for my 65th birthday. It would be nice to go with a friend but none available. It is either go alone or wait until a friend steps forward so I am going it alone. I am so excited with a twinge of fright, I hope to meet people along the way. Traveling light, camping but not carrying food other than lunch and snacks.
You will meet lots if wonderful people along the way, you will experience the hand of friendship from strangers, you will never feel lonely, and you will feel so empowered discovering that you have the strength and the resilience to do this under your own steam. I wish you all the best; treasure every moment xxx
Thank you for the uplifting and heartfelt advice. Hugely appreciated.
Thank you for sharing the WHW and all your words that have encouraged me to give it another go! Solo next time!
I think you'll have a wonderful time. Just have faith in yourself. Don't compare your pace with others: your way is the right way
Good and very practical video. The walker's perspective is well covered with all the pointers of what to look out for and the services to do it. The wall is west of HotW IIRC. I think I've driven past once and got out to have a look.
Thank you for the feedback, it's really helpful to hear what other walkers think. I found the elusive piece of Wall when I travelled along the main road to return to HOTW by bus. I realised that I simply hadn't walked quite far enough from the village centre. Not sure if it was panic about missing my bus home, or desperation to get to the pub!
Another great video! Thank you for showing me how to take your time and enjoy the walk. For the tips as well.
If you go between May and September, you're going to have hours and hours of daylight. There really is no need to rush, and there is so much to enjoy, so why rush
