The Impossible Problem of Video Game Teamwork (and how to fix it)
Переглядів 3,5 тис.5 місяців тому
Multiplayer games have often tried to orient their game around teamwork and communication, but this rarely results in actual teamwork and communication and tends to result in players hating their teammates and leaving the game. I offer a take on how to fix teamwork in games, with a focus on offering more carrot (insentives) and less stick (disincentives), through the specific example of realism...

Me and my buddy used to play PR on coop servers mainly on Veterans gaming server in 2020. It was soo much fun. Downloaded it couple of days ago as i remember about it. Played it a couple of times and every squad i joined was either full quiet or filled with toxic people just yelling stupid shit.
Only downside to SUPMOD is no servers around me are running it. Wish I could play it a lot more.
Like 13 to 15 years ago when i was young i dreamed of playing PR and other games, i disnt have a computer for myself and the one i had access to wasnt good. Also my parents didnt have the money for such things at the time. I hadn't seen any other game like it at the time other than arma 2. But once i was able to get into it, it felt a bit finicky, and because squad was being developed i just got that instead. Really respected the game but even back then it already felt like its days were counted for. It still has a really good vibe to it, but its one of those games that's just got a small dedicated community, that might like many others want to keep it enclosed, don't know though.
I agree I played almost from the beginning and also my gamer laptop and pc died and I would have fixed it but only for pr......I was one of the original PrWars from the very very old days...and I left that clan that I helped start......it has turned out into a developer dominated gameplay.....I like fps gameplay with chess combined it was a sad decent over the many years.....
TLDR: British man complains foreigners play his game.
so your friends are graphic whores :D if graphic is so important why people play battlebit for graphics?
Mate.....I am absolutely shocked in a good way that Project Reality still even exists!!...Do you know when was the last time I played Project Reality?? ...Back in 2011-2012!! I was a helicopter pilot back then (ua-cam.com/video/YJpt2PcqN8U/v-deo.html)....But seriously, isn't this a generational issue here. Where people who used to play a game together grew up, moved on and left? ....I am curious when did you actually pick up Project Reality? ...nice videos btw.
Your number one point was why I stopped playing around the start of the summer. People I would squad up with were no longer on and were replaced with squad after squad of no mics.
I have been playing Squad 44 for two months now, I recently purchased Squad. Considering the player count and that its the "main" game, I was expecting it to be better than it is. It's fun, but I just find myself wanting to go back to S44, it looks better, feels better, sounds better. I don't know why S44 has such a small player base, to compare it to HLL, I find it does everything better than HLL also, yet HLL has like 10x the players. I get that HLL is easier to jump into, friendlies are clearly visible on the screen (though it feels cluttered to me with all the big icons on the screen, regardless of distance) and there's more automatic weapons available. Hopefully the upcoming pacific update injects some life into the game, it would be a shame to see such a good game die.
watched a little in every time tab .. and #1 is what got me the most and that's "the stupid new players" it's not long since i started playing tactical shooters "i just started 2019/2020" i started with squad and after a short time i got Post scriptum "which is Squad 44" and Hell let loose .. before starting or even purchasing everyone of those games i spent a good amount of time on youtube looking at gameplay videos .. tutorials how they are played ,, after that i decided that YES i like them .. even when i didn't have a mic i was starting every game with "hello guys i dont have a mic but i can hear ya so you can tell what you want" .. and most was agreeing to that and we had great times i'm telling this story not show how a good person i am .. but to ask : WHY the F^c8 these stupid people don't check how a game is supposed to be played before playing it ?? i mean youtubers i've watched "like Karmakut / Moidawg and few others" were doing just great to let the new player know every detail in the game but because of these IDIOTS i noticed about a year or so squad is turning into some kind of PUBG where everyone running for his life or to get as much kills as they can 😡
I can only find about 2 or 3 servers with any amount of players.... What am I missing?
You're playing on the wrong server unfortunately. Come to LATAMSQUAD
wait...squad does not have bracing??? i thought it did tbh i thought i just did not do it right lol i thnkn bracing def would fix a lot of issues people have with ICO it rewards preparing for a fire fight, vs the running and gunning they wanted to get rid of
PR used to be my main game for years. I made one of my best friends, if not the best, playing PR. We've been friends for forever now. PR was very different back then. Every evening you almost knew which players to expect, and 99% of these guys were amazing people and I loved squadding up with them. I loved the random chatter and joking together, helping new players get a grip on what PR is about and how to play. But for me it felt like 8 or 9 years ago, after the standalone release and end of PRTC11, it kind of started to go downhill with the community. Don't get me wrong, the SA release was amazing with all the new people, but the community eventually "degenerated" into something that has no resemblence to what the game used to be. No mic players, people just "memeing" around, slurs, locked squads, solo ninjas etc. Eventually I quit as well after a lot of the great peeps were online less and less frequent. I still like to check in occasionally, but it's never going to be the same as it was like 15 years back. The graphics never bothered me, I just don't care about that. It serves it's purpose. And unfortunately, Squad isn't really a replacement. The infantry overhaul was a nice attempt, but the community is just so chaotic and has no interest in squad cohesion. In the early alpha of Squad for the kickstarter backers, I had a lot of hope for the game. But playing it now just makes me question my life choices. Every player is busy with their own war, SLs only push, push, push. Back caps every round because no one wants to hold an objective most of the time. Just mindless meatgrinding into the next flag with a red bar.
You’re welcome to join our server-all we ask is that anyone who doesn’t speak Portuguese or Spanish doesn’t act like a jerk or troll. We have plenty of players who speak English and don’t mind helping out, or you can create squads in your native language, and we’ll have no problem with that.
On the Brazilian server, it’s still like this-we’re mostly the same group, and most of us know each other. We keep in touch through WhatsApp groups and remove those who don’t want to learn how to play. We provide training for piloting and vehicle use. The problem has been American and Russian players causing issues on our server.
I stopped playing last year. The game has survived a long time still does, in fact, but not as strongly as it did a few years ago. The p4ndemic boosted the player count temporarily, but it didn’t last for too long. It's truly remarkable it's lasted this long. Even Squad couldn’t quite become the true spiritual successor. The old BF2 engine hasn’t aged well; many players find the simpler graphics outdated, and the gunplay feels a bit clunky by today’s standards. There’s no one to blame, really. The player base has shifted. Most new players either aren’t interested in using a simple microphone or lack the patience to learn the game (even though it isn’t that complex). The remaining veterans don’t want the responsibility of leading and teaching new players who are willing to learn and the development team has changed a lot too. Most of the remaining players are from Latin America and Russia, where high-end PCs are less accessible compared to the U.S and Western Europe. I think it’s time to move on. I’ve heard great things about Arma Reforger, but unfortunately, my PC isn’t powerful enough to run it. I’d also recommend checking out the game’s OST, especially "Homeland Ambiences." Scott Tobin is a genius who deserves more recognition, I believe he’s also working on the OST for Squad too.
The new players flooding in is why I keep playing SL.I remember joining around 2015-2016 when bluedrake was making videos on PR and wanting that experience of team work. Now that I’ve been playing for a while I realized I have become the kind of person who needs to SL to make that teamwork work. Anyone who wants to have that experience of what PR offers needs to SL at least a couple of times to understand the game. I find that when I’m SL, delegating SL tasks to another player helps take the load of commanding 8 players off my back. Split the team into fireteams, one assaulting element and one MG element, have the inexperienced assistant SL lead the MG team and give him some tactical freedom, I find that gives the new players in your squad some taste of PR should be. Keep your orders short and keep the objective in mind. Try to take care objs that give your squad some action. We were all new players once, and many new players might be COD players, but the fact that they want to play a near 20 year of game marketed as a hardcore teamwork based shooter has to attract a certain player who wants teamwork. Give them a chance and mentor them I say.
😞
hey I can work for you as a editor
Hi I played project really I was new players I Loved to fly heli but the GUI map point is non existent I like to play causally I got kicked a lot I did see admin abuse and I can't play with out someone ask me if I have mic and I got kicked without telling the guy that I have but I like to play muted I focuse better.
I started and stopped playing PR about 18 - 20 years ago. I never saw the 1.0 release, but I played in the early days of the mod until I was in high school. I lost my stomach for warsim games as a teenager (something about all the illegal wars, precision munitions used on civilians, the conduct of the occupation forces, endless reasons really,) but PR had always been a guilty pleasure for me. When eventually I had a rig that could properly run Squad and my experience with milsim genre as it stood in 2022, I went back to PR to see what I'd missed out on after watching some Slorgs videos. You need to leave this game behind, man. It's a beautiful game, really, but after replaying it a decade after its heyday it was obvious: The game is still being played by twelve year old broke boys.
speaking of roblox, actual realistic milsims exist, the comunity has a "toxic side" too but if you get used to n words and f words you'll play js fine
just played my first game of PR the other day and actually had a surprisingly more cohesive experience than ive ever had on squad, community was alot more welcoming than i initially thought. if you havent tried it i say go play it, its really not that bad
Go Arma 3 is better, only bad thing is all the DLC,only buy some popular dlc with usage in community servers
PR looks better than Squad, deal with it. PR has stylised graphics that sets itself apart from Squad which has that generic unreal engine look. I can't stand to people who acts as if squad is a good looking game.
Cope and seethe kid
@@gruggsming32 your mom copes
I agree PR's graphics makes the game even more enjoyable it's style still holds up, Squad has 711 graphics
in one month we expect to make video "im coming back to pr" 2/3 from the video you complain about cliks and views.
I'm a regular player or PR. My few points. 1- I agree with you on your first point that the English players are less. Mostly russians and Spanish speaking people. 2- I personally don't like ww2 maps the fight is long and only few people enjoyed it like CAS , Tank. 3- I think the only thing people enjoy is ins matches they are awesome i personally enjoy the most but devs need to add some new stuff or balance the servers. 4- useless server rules.
Strange how quickly people forget that the arcadey "spawn with new ammo" mechanic is also how it works in PR lol
when I was picking arma 3 vs squad to purchuse, arma looking like ass was the reason I didn't purchase it.
Very shitty, uninformed take. While slorgs is bitching about PR i will still be their with the PR radicals. Slorgs is just upset his cash cow isnt as viable anymore.
once pr drops a huge update again hes gonna make a video explaining how pr>squad
PR was never a cash cow for all the reasons I explained in the video, I just liked the game
It's harder today to make money of YT even harder to make it full time job. with 1.3k subs I would say invest in your future not so much time in YT. YT like what you say about PR, isn't going to a better place in the future for you as youtuber.
This is a second channel my main channel is called slorgs
I tried to do my part to revive PR a few months back as a veteran player in the EU. I get emotional when I think about climbing up the mountains in Korengal with a grappling hook at 3am with some new American friends, crawling through the fields on Kokan approaching insurgent caches, playing as the ARF on Ramiel. Man the memories and the people we met along the way, its a bitter sweet feeling. The current player base is mixed, it's a damn shame. The popular servers are managed poorly, people are kicked and banned too quickly and the result is a declining player count. I think the death of Free Candy Van was the real start of the decline. The only way that this game can be saved is to introduce mic only servers, some type of whitelisting via a discord channel for verified players. Let the shitters go play together and start building a community around dedicated players. It's not totally dead yet and I still think even 10 years from now, it will still be around... but I don't ever see it returning to the 'glory days' unfortunately.
This ☝☝👍👍
Ha! I knew the day would come when Slorgs would join my squad. We were close to end up in a video many a time before, on that PR event of the year (see Slorgs: ua-cam.com/video/wCvvrnRdTcI/v-deo.html), when Slorgs pretended to fight of the Russian deluge under mortar fire in that warehouse, or on that other game in that other warehouse on the last flag , when my squad and me failed to save Slorgs from that friendly CAS chopper team kill (see Slorgs UA-cam). But alas.. I digress ... when Slorgs joined that day on Yamalia, I knew something great was about to happen.. my squad leader instinct instantly assigned him the marksman or automatic rifleman kit. A grand video debut in the Slorgiverse! I just did not know it would turn out to such a brutal, bad, painful experience... we died like a family of baby moose, leaving our hope and a trail of our dark red blood in the cold, snowy forest of Yamalia. In addition to horrible pilot action, griefers, lack of admin activity, lack of mission oriented action in the team, and lack of squad leader communication (with few exceptions), the other team brutally outplayed us, rubbing our faces in the dirt. To be fair, having Slorgs as squad member or not, as a squad leader you experience both outlier outcomes very intensely: both getting a thorough bloody rape beating or going full Chuck Norris Delta Force is a signal that something wrong with the the game in the current round, or in the larger sense. I agree with some of the observation Slorgs made and would like to list my perspective: The small community is changing and/or fragmenting, the lack of a set of well administered, "golden" english servers with strict voip and team play rules, the lack of player committment (player training, engaging in communities and event organisation, map making, asset making, or event donations), a degradation in the level of civility players are interacting (be it due to discord as a medium or culture), lack of targetted content creation on a larger scale to attract new players, very ineffective new player onbarding experience on the PR website (there are many good intro videos) and PR Discord. There is a lack of collaboration from the side of R-DEVs to with communities to improve the community aspect of the game and make it stand out in the current market, a lack of contact the active squad leaders, the critical set of players that moderate the game and have a strong understanding of the gameplay dynamics. The new WW2 maps are a blast. Unexpected immersion. The revamped Command and Control (CnC) mode is an amazing experience, as were some of the organised events. And also, new OPFOR factions seem to be in the works. But assets and maps are not enough. As Slorgs said so clearly: PR was about the community, the effect of "coming home". Could a new creative event format lead to higher donations or media exposure, or training of new players? Perhaps something UA-camrs would find worthwhile to cover? From an outsiders perspective, there is no strategy. Then again, this is not a commercial project. You get what you do: It lives and dies with constructive participation. Thanks for all the people that made that happen, and kudos to those who still try that happen. Thanks Slorgs for joining my squad that day and for bleeding out with me on the snows of Yamalia. .
My computer (I9 12900K, 32GB DDR5, GTX 1080) can run both PR and Squad at max settings. PR is better, so. much. better. To me, all Squad offers over PR is better graphics. I don't want Project Reality 2.0. I love Project Reality the way it is, but it desperately needs a face lift and to increase its server count, to have a better future. I love World War Two and I really like the passion and dedication from the devs, but I completely agree. They could've spent that time expanding the server count, the dev team itself, or porting the game to a newer engine, to upgrade the graphics. I've tried to get many friends into PR, and they refuse because of the graphics (even if they don't have money to buy Squad), No other reason. I haven't been playing PR because the American servers are either empty, or none existent when I get on.
Same. I could have jumped into Squad a long time ago. Not sure about Reforger, but for now PR could still out-shine the market in some ways.
wanna play with me?
This is the same as why another OG PR creator, Bluedrake, decided to leave the PR. The difference is that, if I'm not mistaken, he left not for a UA-cam career, but rather for a more genuine community like the old PR. That’s why he is currently making Operation Doorstep
There's a Chinese madlad with his Iranian servant who are currently making four new factions for the game: Iran, modern Argentina, Turkey, and Brazil
brah
As far as I know, they are all part of the PR development team. You call them servants and lunatics? What did they do to make you call them that? Isn't it good to have something new?
@@MIxxCoru Sorry for my English, brother. I learned English from GTA.

LMAO. Krayt got done dirty.
Sorry, not sorry but this game dont have future. There is so much better competition its pointless playing this old ass BF2 game :D
its so dead sad
Playing is not business. Making UA-cam content has become a business. They are not the same thing. Getting a server and starting up a clan was fun, and that was playing. It took dedication and hard work to keep the asses at bay.
I think you should just do the things that you think are right and doing good to you and your channel growth.
Come play in the Reality Brasil server, we can made a English squad for you and some of your friends, we also speak english, its our second language! my nick in game is also KappuccinoXVIII, i can be your portuguese translator lol
Definitely agree with you brother, I've been playing the game for quite some time, not really much of a veteran myself, but I experienced the days when you have a mental list of great SLs that's always there whenever you boot up the game and you'll always look for those names. It ain't the way it was now, lots of free kit squads and mute sq members. I hope it makes a comeback though, but more hoping that they get to put this into a more modern engine (though that may mean having quite of a price)
I don't agree that it's not realistic. Sustained rates of fire tend to be 15rpm for a lot of automatic weapons. Things like machine guns can get up to 100 rounds and things. But almost all firing is single shot, burst, and so on. Whenever it is more than that, it's spraying, it's close quarters, and so on. I feel like Squad very much allows you to close quarters spray and pray (and hit), but makes you have to slow down at longer ranges. The scope shakes and wobbles in a tight, circular fashion, within reason. I find it to be massively more realistic than almost any other system of shooting we've had. Almost no one takes shots while moving, especially not fast, because it is extremely likely you'll miss. You don't want to be shouldering a rifle constantly, because it is indeed rather tiring. 3 - 4 kilograms ain't much, but try holding it somewhat away from you, while it's exploding in a small way, and after sprinting in 20 - 40 - 60 kilograms. Unless you're very well trained and you have a light load, you're not going to be peeking, you're not going to be snapping, you're getting into cover, slowly squeezing off rounds at a target you can't really see, even tho it's only a few hundred metres away, and so on. When it's not that kind of situation, you tend to have split second firefights where you don't even have to aim. I feel like Squad has actually achieve something no other game has. ua-cam.com/video/2p_wYTHnJtM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/QRDS1JxnShA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/users/shortsdzp2nlOa2qc ua-cam.com/users/shortsPeNX_bgUTwk ua-cam.com/users/shortsAY8ryCfqinI www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/6c8616/in_regards_to_sway_i_asked_some_military/ Look at how close he is, and look at the spread. Look at how much the gun shakes. Even small shakes mean where you hit is way off. Now imagine that instead of being what, 10 metres away, maybe, you were 50...? 100? 300? (on the last youtube link) I'd sooner say some things about Squad make you more capable than a real soldier, even a good one, than the updates have made you unrealistically bad. I'm aware you made the effects argument, but I'm actually disagreeing that the effects are unrealistic. They're pretty close, in my mind. On the note of squad based incentives: suppression should decrease, especially with the more people around you (thus allowing you to fight back more and more). you should gain points for being around others, and objective based actions and supportive actions should give you *way* more points than they do. Rearming someone, healing someone, suppressing, they should all be worth ridiculously more than just a kill. Furthermore, you could make it so points gained are higher based on players in the same area. Make movement slower, so it's even more silly to go off on your own. LMAO i just pressed play again and you mentioned the suppression. I think anything that gives you unrealistic effects should be something you avoid, I think, in this game. you could potentially have squads unlock commandos / sof operators, where they get tricked out guns and special guns for each role and things, which allow the top cooperative squad to do more. but i feel like this could backfire, maybe. i feel like emplacements and defenses need to be easier to put up and more varied, like some of the mods available tend to do. also, map design! maps that are well designed make teams flow together and have to work together to overcome struggles. very normal, very open maps tend to lend themselves to no specific playstyle, no specific approach, and that can be good, but having more streamlined maps and more already developed maps (lots of emplacements, trenches and so on) can help a lot. cave systems. tunnels. etc. Think of how much an assault / defend kind of map and gamemode would help. Imagine having an ability to set up ambushes without it being bad for your team. Imagine the ability to set up a large assault as a *necessity*. spawning on teammates is a big one. i know it's not ''realistic'' but i think games ought to go for ''practical realism'' more so than tarkov's drink water every few hours realism. something gimmicky that actually forces you to be split up or have to go out of your way to be together and so on, it's not good. having wave respawns or slow respawns is enough. having punishing gameplay is enough. making actions like rearming or healing someone easier and quicker also rewards the behaviour. it's hard to add things to a game that incentivise because, well, it's meant to be a realistic game, within reason. also, armour of the tank variety is in a game about infantry, of a very minor scale. i think things would improve a lot if they were removed or made very rare. i think things would be a lot better off if light vehicles were the main focus, as a means to get around quickly, and so on. I will also give a bump to tutorials. Really good tutorials change players and communities. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter have amazing tutorials, and I would be willing to bet it does a lot. Tho, I wish they made it more obvious that it was there, and even started players off having to try it. Squad could absolutely use a tutorial explaining mechanics, as well as concepts of warfare like tactics. I went and watched (some, for now) of your Squad could learn a lot from Squad44 video, and I think specialisation would indeed help. The more you can reduce classes having shared items and abilities, the more you have to work together. It would be interesting to add more niche benefits, like one rifleman being an MG assistant, so he carries bandoliers or boxes of LMG ammo instead of a normal resupply, and then a normal rifleman, that supplies rifle ammunition. A grenadier, a spotter (for the sniper). it would be interesting to see what niche benefits they could add, or ways to specialise.
For me best part about PR was community! And ofc the gameplay itself. about youtube, it’s completely understandable, i mean PR won’t be able to compete against these new games in terms of visuals and graphics, ‘dog piss poo’ graphics that sums it up, maybe just like you said if they invested in upgrading the graphics engine PR would be one of the best milsim shooters out there. It’s unfortunate what it has become, and the loss of the community and the dedicated players is what saddens me the most, where you say that hopping on the game feels like home i can completely relate to that, met a lot of people and made alot of friends, i even got alot of memories and good moments lived in PR. All came to an end unfortunately cz i myself haven’t played for over a year, anyway! Keep it up slorgs great videos and hope you thrive on your way of making out of youtube a job!
I stopped playing cuz of the shit graphics
"i played a game where the players don't like to roleplay the army with me" Go enlist or reenlist jackass 🎉
Here's an idea, stop being a wussy and play PR...
Started playing PR when squad updated their graphics *again* and raised pc requirements above what i could run. Stopped playing PR when Post Scriptum came back lol. I actually dont play PR anymore because logging in to check if there MIGHT be a server to play on, and then waiting there spamming the join button for 15 minutes if there is one, just so i can MAYBE have fun if theres a good english speaking squad unlocked with room is just. Too much.
I personally watched a certain milsim gaming youtube turned dev for a couple years when I was a teenager who loved Battlefield 3 etc. I intended on playing games like Project Reality once I built my own pc but by the time I did build it, the only notable successful and approachable mil sim ish type game was Hell Let Loose. Squad has become super promising, but I just havent been convinced to buy it yet simply because I dont have the time to learn that game
