Cor, it's dusty in here. Let's just wipe that up a bit... That's better. Where was I? Better yet, what's next?
Rallyman SHAKEDOWN: 42 - Easy Right, Maybe?
In this Shakedown, we don't quite know what we're driving into, all thanks to some random Climb tokens.
I must have said it before and will almost certainly say it again: You can put a quick and easy twist on your games of Rallyman by picking up one of its many components and asking "how else can I make use of this?"
This time out, we're making use of Climb tokens not to ascend or descend through the mountains, but to go up and down through the gears in a pacenote-less rally. Will it work? Can we learn anything about rallying from randomly determining whether a corner is faster or slower than we thought? Time to find out...

SHAKEDOWN is a showcase of Rallyman and the community that makes it what it is. From variant rules to recreated race tracks, from serious strategy to silly situations to find yourself in, I want to highlight anything and everything that makes this game shine, much of it community created content.
What would you like to see the most? What aspect of Rallyman hasn't been explored enough? Which circuits are hidden gems? What rules do you insist others try out for themselves? Let me know, and be sure to spread the word about whatever great Rallyman content you find on your travels.
Want a travel destination suggestion? How about the Rallyman DIRT forums on BoardGameGeek (boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/312959/rallyman-dirt/forums/0), where you'll find an awful lot of suggestions for alternate uses on all these bits and bobs in the box.
Want to play Lombard RAC Rally in your web browser? The fine folks who believe in the Internet Archive have you covered (archive.org/details/msdos_Lombard_RAC_Rally_1988). Remember to support your local libraries, too, while you're at it.

Rallyman SHAKEDOWN: 41 - Is This Stock Car Racing?

In this Shakedown, we hope to bring the fierce battles of the BTCC to the table. Armed with new dashboards that I completely fail to read properly (Whoops), we're bringing some of the best drivers of the British Touring Car Championship to Rallyman to battle it out around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit. Who will barge into their opponents and push them off the track, and who nudge their opponent...

In this Shakedown, we find out what happens when evil scientists point their Shrinkomatic 2000 transformation ray at the original Rallyman. The result is Rallyboy, a dinky version of Rallyman that you can print and play and build yourself using components you might already have laying around - perhaps including your Rallyman components, of course. Having still not seen (let alone played) the or...
Rallyman SHAKEDOWN: 39 - Virtually Spectating

In this Shakedown, we take to the skies for a spot of virtual spectating to see what we can learn about driving fast. The WRC loved to show off the Virtual Spectator in the early 2000s because it showed audiences what it actually meant for a driver to lose time in a corner, or the effects of being on the wrong tyres for the surface, or even how consistent a driver was from one year to the next....

In this Shakedown, we're going to do our best to NOT make use of the outer walls of the oval. Being European, I've limited knowledge of the world of NASCAR. It's not just about turning left, but beyond that, what's all the fuss about? I couldn't tell you. But what I can tell you is that the Rallyman community does know a thing or two about NASCAR, and you can even go so far as to print out some...

In this Shakedown, we're attempting to recreate history with some solo challenges. Bringing together seemingly any rules you want to make use of, so long as that list includes DrWorm's NPCs, the Historic Solo Challenges for Rallyman: DIRT allow you to recreate - or reimagine - more than 50 different moments from the whole history of the World Rally Championship. Maybe you want to take part in 1...

In this Shakedown, we stop to think about what surface these spaces even are. You'd think it'd be obvious, but with ambiguous art and no definition in the rulebook, you can make shortcuts whatever surface you like. Snow is probably a bad choice, but a change to gravel can mean approaching them in a whole new way. Maybe you'll have no brakes with which to hit their speed limit, or will have to i...

In this Shakedown, we wonder if there is such a thing as 'too small' when it comes to Rallyman circuits, as we find out what different size courses can offer us. A lot of the courses I've made have skewed towards the larger side, with lots of tiles being used in an attempt to better portray the look and feel of a course, but is bigger better? Yokiboy might have the right idea by providing long ...

In this Shakedown, four new classes of cars throw themselves into the banked corners of the historical Monza circuit in Formula Rallyman. In this Shakedown, we're hoping to prove that getting the rules wrong isn't a problem at all, and may even be beneficial to you. Rallyman has multiple versions. I'm most familiar with its latest incarnation, and have never laid eyes on the original game, yet somehow I've been playing Rallyman by its old rules rather than its new rules - and that's no bad thing. We're going to use a few of those...

In this Shakedown, we don't know what we're driving into with the Randomcross rules. Rallycross events are full of strategy with regards to when the best time to take your Joker Lap is. That's Randomcross, or the friendly version at least, which allows a driver to - if there are no tiles in front of them - pick and pl...

if you start at 1 gear than you have more dice to place and therefore you go faster, so it seems to me that breaking and accelerating might be the best strategy i am new to the game so maybe i am wrong
@@МихаилПономаренко-щ3ы It's all about the amount of risk you want to take, or how realistic you want your racing. If you think you can successfully slam on the brakes and work your way up through the gears, great. If you think it's a bit strange for cars to do that, the Redline rules put the risk towards the end of your turn, rather than the start. Subtle change, but worth experimenting with.
Very nice driving lesson : I share it on facebook, Rallyman page ! Merci !
So clever!
What do you paint your tokens with?
@@JulioR23 Appropriately coloured Sharpies - or any other brand of pen I suppose. Much quicker than painting them too.
@MattElliottGSY I tried this and some colors pop out better than others. Yours look better than mine too! I'm jealous haha. I love your videos btw. Keep at it! Maybe some day I'll challenge you!
Excellent! I nearly choked on my lunch as you mentioned me, by my nickname, in your intro. I'm slightly embarrassed as the most recent viewing of an event at Höljes by the FIA WRX made me question my Rallyman design choices, and I have been going back to the design stages. Fantastic seeing you playtest the circuits, this will help me too. Are you sure about the Junction (aka intersection) tiles not counting as Corners. In GT, which is circuit racing just like RX, it states that a Corner is a space with Restrictions, while in DIRT it says that a Corner is recognized by Speed Limits and no dividing line between the lanes (and followed by many more details on how they work). I have been treating Junction tiles as Corners. You play more than I do, and I'm sure you're right, but I would appreciate where the ruling comes from. Lastly, what video games did you show snippets from? The cartoony one with tons of rally cars on the circuit looked fun!
The RX rulebook has your answer there, couldn't be more clearer, pg 9, "These are not to be confused with Corners which also appear on some fork tiles", so the tile you used on the long course before the joker is a corner, but the one on the short course isn't. I think to treat the junctions as corners is perhaps more obvious than not (I mean, I default to doing so in my head, it's right there on video), so I wouldn't be surprised if we collectively end up doing so anyway. It wouldn't be the first ruling we've ignored or changed. The games this time out were Dirt Rally and Circuit Superstars. Plays a little like art of rally, but easier to get into.
@@MattElliottGSY forks, dangit, I looked for your use of "junctions," and thought of "intersections," but not "forks." Thanks for the clarification. I also neglected to check the RX rules, doh! I still don't quite get the language used, as they say, "Spaces on a Fork tile behave just like normal spaces with the following exceptions: SPACES WITH A SPEED LIMIT These follow exactly the same rules for Speed Limits as described in the main rulebook." They hardly clear things up with this disclaimer, "These are not to be confused with Corners which also appear on some fork tiles." I love the simplicity of treating a space with restrictions as a "corner." Anyhow, kudos as always on creating such enjoyable content!
@@JoachimErdtman That use of 'normal spaces' puts me in the mindset of 'not corners', and it's not unusual for normal spaces that aren't corners to have speed limits, even in GT when you cross a sharp corner limit for example, but visually, yeah, they absolutely look like corners. The rules just can't seem to win sometimes. Unified redfined rock solid rulebooks when, I wonder? It's just occurred to me, since mentioning that there wasn't a corner on your short course, that I probably determined turn order 'wrong' here and there in that race as well. Yet more proof that it's easy to go wrong and that it makes little difference if you do, so long as you're consistent.
I really love this game but I wish myself to have time and companions to play it with regularly. Thumb up for Your ideas :)
Thanks. Do extend that thumb up to the community who lead me down these rabbit holes in the first place.
The Joy of it now being available on BoardGameArena if you’re a subscriber or finding one to host so you can join. I can’t talk as I haven’t tried it on BGA yet nor played for a good while
@@SteveBlackwell-s3j Be sure to report the bugs - I don't quite think it's in a state to show off, but it's close.
Hi . Thx for your videos . Could i mix a track made of different tiles coming from core game , 110%, Rx and run a rally race head to head ? And what if i'd like to use the mixed road Tyre? How do i manage the loss of control? With Cards from the core game ? Thx :)
You could. I think you'd end up pulliing more damage tokens if you use Gear cards vs dashboard tables, but the idea is to not crash in the first place... There's no wrong way to play. If it makes sense to you and your opponents, go for it.
Yes :) i was thinking to use the rally tyre dashboard instead of the Rx . That's why i've asked . Thx for your reply :)
Hi Matt. I very much admire the edging you have done to your tokens. What method do you use? Do you use a particular set of paints or pens?
Regular old Sharpies. I think the Yellow or Orange (or both) might have come from a different brand, but there's nothing more to it than that.
The best of the best. Kojima's finest story telling ever! With limited technology of late 1990s he still found a way to show his vision to us. Kojima you brought us so much joy and best of memories that will never be forgotten! Arigatō
Thanks again Elliot. Has a consensus been reached about NPCs crossing two different road surfaces?
DrWorm addressed it with a couple of extra sentences in version 2.1 of his NPCs. Pick a dice pool, and if you ever need to use a different colour coast die, swap them in, rolling any non-hazard results to confirm whether they're still non-hazards or not.
what is the video game at the start of the video?
That's Swedish Classics GP (2005), followed by Gravel (2018), and I think it's Dirt Rally 2.0 (2019) making an appearance at the end as well. All PC.
@@MattElliottGSY Thanks!
DrWorm's NPC rules are fun, but I would be tempted to just use the regular rules when racing with just two cars.
Maybe I haven’t played enough, but in all my races GT5 and R5 consistently beat all competition. The 6th gear is situational and very track dependent, the boost die is much more consistent and versatile and that really outweighs everything else
R.i.p solid snake...😢😢
I find it insane how this doesn’t have enough recognition
🛸🌌
I would suggest that Leader Dice replaces normal Coast Dice during rain, even on when an OK marker has been drawn. Just to at least feel like it's wet still.
I love your videos. I don't have the chance to play as much Rallyman as I would like, but checking out all your fun ideas is highly enjoyable.
I see you switching between Driverless Cars and Non Player Cars rules, why?
Partly to check more rulesets out, and partly to play to a rulesets strengths: DCs are quick and simple, allowing you to get up and running with a full set of cars in no time, but they just don't work in rallying. NPCs work in both rallying and circuit racing, but now you have to play multihanded with more decisions to be made, and your games take longer. Depends what I want to get out of my opponents on the day, I suppose - another part of the puzzle to solve, or a character to compete with.
@@MattElliottGSY cool, thanks for the reply. I love your Shakedown videos!
Très intéressante idée que de jouer avec des caractéristiques des pilotes. Merci !
Well played, a great project.
Thanks for these videos. Really like your cars. Where do you get them from? Struggling to find ones small enough
Thanks. They're the ones that come with Rallyman, just with blobs of paint on, nothing more.

Well the good news is that my time will be easy to beat, so have fun and show us how the locals do it.
Very enjoyable watch, thanks Matt!
This is where the maps in the old 3rd (2010) and 4th (2011) edition of Rallyman are so cool! Any which way you aligned those boards you ended up with so many tracks that you wanted to play in addition to the one that you were actually playing. I love this idea though, to create multiple tracks in one go with the new GT and DIRT hexes.
I would be interested in what your times would be without going all out all the time and trying to be as aggressive as possible?
If the BoardGameGeek monthly challenges are any indication, not as competitive as you'd think. I can see a route through this stage that would result in just over 2 minutes, should your rolls go flawlessly, but whether that's the best route to take, I don't know. But yes, it's not all about crashing, I've got some 'proper stuff' in the idea pipeline.
Double down shift rule... very interesting. Merci beaucoup pour cette série !
Un grand merci pour tous ces «Shakedow» !
Merci pour cette vidéo ! I didn't find the best play at 19:20 ! 🙂
Thanks. The NPC rolled well that turn and could have finished in Gear 4, in a space which gave it turn order, in a place where I'd never be able to overtake him.
