Can I make THE CREAKING from Minecraft out of PAPER?
I'm David Landis, the creator of Kooky Craftables! I'm a graphic designer and paper craft artist for companies like SCHOLASTIC, DISNEY, MARVEL, GOOGLE, AMAZON, NAMCO/BANDAI, DISCOVERY KIDS and more! I invented the Kooky Craftables DIY projects to encourage crafting fun for all ages. I've taken special care to invent papercraft templates that are easy to make, so it's a fun way to explore your creativity and practice your crafting skills. Let me know what paper craft characters you'd like me to make next!
Today I'm trying to make THE CREAKING from MINECRAFT out of PAPER. I love the shape of this character and I wanted to see if it would be able to stand itself up in paper craft form.

Epson EcoTank Printers: ONE YEAR LATER - My honest review...

So I've owned my EPSON EcoTank ET-4850 for a full year and have put it through heavy use as a paper craft artist. Originally I had a cartridge-based ink-jet printer, but I hated the super expensive ink cartridges that machine used so I felt like it was time to try out a TANK-based printer. I've been using it for a FULL YEAR and I can give you my honest opinion of how's it's held up. And is a ta...

Turning classic arcade game 2D sprite into 3D shadow box ART!
I hav just a bought one of these but my colour is just not accurate -I am really struggling -does anyone have any tips??
There are LOTS of things that can affect color. What I have to do sometimes is test different papers, and then different print settings with those different papers to get what I want out of it. But then there are things like monitor calibration that could be off... or even something as realizing that any objet that is seen on a backlit monitor looks different on paper (illuminated vs reflective color).
Here a tip.. Never use cleaning functions.. Go to google and find the same colour of the ink and print that colour that stuck.. I have mine for 5 years never have any problems..
I have my epson printer 5 years. Still has all the colors, no drop outs. Used over 5000 pages and use for photos too...thumbs up!
Thumbs up indeed! Your machine has been a workhorse! Which model number did you choose?
I have an 8500 and it is amazing and unbelievably economical on ink. I don’t do as much printing as you but 1300 sheets with 1100 approx in colour with maybe 100 colour photos, about 75 being 7x5 and the rest larger A4. Amazing quality and none of the six inks are down to half on the reservoirs yet on the initial bottles of ink. The next batch of ink bottles will last even longer because the machine will not have to fill all those empty pipes it came with from the factory.
Totally agree... and yes! I had not thought of the fact that it won't have to initialize so much ink on the second filling. Cool!
@@KookyCraftables Yes, I think it used about 15% if not more of the initial ink just to prime the system. Will not use any for this when it comes to the second batch of bottle refills.
@@hedydd2 Yep... that had me a BIT worried when I first installed it and saw those levels go down so much. But ever since, the levels go down so slowly... it's truly amazing after having to get new cartridges every 2 months with my old machine.
The printer i have is a Laser black and white printer, Brother DCP-1510E, I had it since 2017 (I paid like 50$ on a Black Friday deal). And only last year did i change the Toner cartridge on it, the one it came with was rated for 1000 pages and was swapped with one rated for 2000 pages. The old one (according to the printer) still had 200 pages left, but i could see the quality of the print fading a bit so that's why I swapped it. The only issue i ever had with it is some paper jamming, and that was from the paper being too thin. Was quite surprised when the jamming happed and the software jumped into action and started displaying on my computer screen step by step instructions on how to remove the paper, it was quite helpful. So yeah, i'd recommend a DCP series printer from Brother.
Wow! That sounds great... I have a brother black and white COPY machine and it has been chugging for years. (I need a new toner cartridge for it because it's really weak now, but it has been a workforce for me for probably over 25 years)
Evil crafts, def keep this kook away from the kids.
I used to print my Husbands invoices in black and white only due to the cost of colour ink and how fast you go through it. When I purchased my ECO Tank I ended up changing it to colour cause I don't seem to use any ink lol (compared to a cartrige)
Me too! I used to spend a lot of time trying to make sure I printed GRAYSCALE whenever I could with my old cartridge machine. Now with the ecotank I don't give a second thought to just printing everything in color.
Some of these comments refer to waste ink pads that fill up and cannot be replaced. In the Epson ET 8500/8550 printers the waste ink pad assembly (ink maintenance box) is a user replaceable part and clearly shown in the manual. They have a similar part for other printers.
Yes! I have not had to replace mine yet... but seems well documented that it can be done. Some people report trouble with it though. I hope it goes smoothly for me!
STIIIIIILLL reminding you on whether those springtrap crafts are done 😂😂😂
LOL! Glad you're still here... but things are changing on my site so I probably won't be doing much fan art any more. Stay tuned.
@KookyCraftables Alright dude no problem
I don’t turn mine off.
I guess I never turn mine off either, but it sometimes sits for days or this past summer for weeks on end (with no clogging)
Can you print borderless 8.5x11 thanks
I've not tried! There is a no-border setting in the print dialogue box... but I'll have to try it to see if it really works or not. I want to do a new video answering everyone's Q&As so I'll add that to the list.
I’ve been watching these vids since you had less than 200 subs
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING! :)
@@KookyCraftables :)
I have wondered and you helped explain my concerns. I do like the epson software and cloud printing etc
Glad you found the video helpful!
I want make, please put it on your website?
Have older model of this printer L3150 had to download skethy rusian software(didint pay for it) to to reset diper warning now i repalce it every now an then.
Wow!
Well done! I now have a project for my husband's man cave/anniversary gift - JOUST is his all-time favorite too.
It truly is one of the best classic arcade games ever. Thanks for the comment and good luck to you! (happy anniversary!)
So glad I never went for this, just get a laser printer people. Not that expensive and hassle free.
From my experience... laser printers cannot match the fine color reproduction and photo quality that ink jet can. But maybe newer machines are better? What model laser do you recommend?
@KookyCraftables Well I just use mine for black and white docs so my use case is probably different from yours but mine is a fuji xerox dw225, and it's been super reliable and hassle free for years
@@Xalgucennia Oh I totally agree with you. For black and white docs, laser is KING. Laser printers usually have postscript printing built in so they print text MUCH cleaner and sharper than an ink jet can do. But my papercraft would look pretty darn bad in black and white (unless I designed them to be black and white only as a style... hmmm... now that has be itching to design a black and white paper toy) :)
Clikbait title... mah...
We had an ET2750 and after 5 years and 22000 copies the felt reservoir was full. We didn't have the time to fix it so free cycled it and bought a ET2850. Both work fine, they aren't the fastest but quality is good and we can print from phones and tablets and, by email, print .jog and .pdf. cost wise, you need to add 1p to each print copy to cover machine replacement but it still cheap to run. Previously we had an HP and got fed up with it being pernikity over compatible cartridges. That being said, my Deskjet 930c still churns out black and white prints with huge HP45 compatible cartridges but they are increasingly more difficult to source
Thanks for all the info! 22,000 copies! Wow!
wow can i say your art is wonderful! it makes me so happy to see paper crafts alive, i came for a printer review and found another wonderful artist
I’m so glad you enjoy my paper crafting! And thank you for checking out the printer review.
Have you found a good compatible ink other than epson brand?
TBH I have not tried any generic inks in this printer (I am still using the first bottles of ink the machine came with - which is so amazing to me.) But when I do get more ink, I will stick with EPSON ink. I used to try generic ink for my older CARTRIDGE-based Epson and my experience with them was terrible. Quality was bad and I ended up throwing them away. Seems like a tank printer might be more forgiving with generic ink, but I don't know. Have you tried any in the past?
No but I also have an Epson Ecotank and love it & italmost time for new ink...and I also use it for crafting... so I was just wondering if you had tried any generic ink brands .... BTW your crafts are cool!
@@nancyaviles759 If you do try generic ink brands, let me know how it goes! I'd love to hear! How long have you owned your ecotank and have you had to swap out the waste bin on it yet?
It is so economical on ink, there’s very little justification for buying generic ink. The Epson genuine ink is reasonably priced and I have suffered zero issues even though it sometimes isn’t used for up to two weeks at a time, maybe longer occasionally.
Both of my Epson Ecotank printers have suffered nearly constant clogging. I've used more ink cleaning than I have actually printing. One of those printers is used daily (work), the other rarely (home). Both are garbage IMO, and that's where they will end up once the ink runs out. I'll switch to using my employer's B&W laser at work, and give up on printing at home. It's just not worth the hassle anymore.
I'm surprised to hear you're having that problem with 2 machines! That stinks! My experience has been completely different.
Thank you for this review. Fixing to purchase one because I can no longer be held captive by HP.😂
Glad I could help!
so the more pricey ones have faster print speed and better resolution and on the other side the cheaper ones have smaller tanks less features worse resolution ad very slow printing speeds
hope this helps!
So you'd say that the cheaper model Epson EcoTank has LESS resolution? (I was wondering if the resolution was the same, but the tradeoff was that they were slower, smaller, and less paper would fit in). If resolution is worse, then I guess I would bite the bullet and get a more expensive one.
@@KookyCraftables if your just printing B&W it should be fine but if you want any image that will color a entire sheet of paper yea go with the more expensive one
What type of printer are you mostly gonna use it for?
I'm using it for home office stuff (printing out emails, or receipts, etc). BUT I sometimes work on engineering my paper craft projects at home too, so I'd want to make sure it prints well on light card stock with good quality.
I have an aging Epson WF series inkjet with the cartridges, and it's still working fine, but if I even need to replace it I'll definitely be interested in the Epson tank model. My Epson has been completely trouble-free, reliable and easy to use.
I still have a workforce printer at my home office and they are WORKHORSES for sure. My workforce from my studio I donated to my parents when I got my first EcoTank. After having that EcoTank, I hate buying cartridges more than ever... so I will probably replace my home machine soon with another tank style printer. I will warn you though if you ever do go to an EcoTank, that they are not built quite as nicely (they are smaller machines and the paper tray is flimsy compared to a workforce). BUT the ink savings for me have made a huge difference saving me so much money.
So you never answer the question.....!
Not a scam based on all my reactions. And I did a one-year-later review too, you can see if that held up. ;)
any chance you'd consider making these available as a digital download for purchase?
Hi Katy! I thought about doing these as digital downloads in my store but I fear it would frustrate many users because these cards need to be printed on VERY thick card stock so they stand up strong and tall after colored with alcohol or water based inks (which can weaken the paper). So if people print these on typical thin card stock they might not be pleased with the results and get upset. The card stock I use on the actual kits if SUPER DUPER thick so you have a premium experience. But perhaps I could engineer a different version of these that would be more forgiving for self-printing. I will give it some thought. (Or it could just be straight up coloring pages that don't stand up, but that not as kooky :)
@ that makes sense!
I’ve had an EcoTank for a couple of years, maybe longer. It’s been great.
Great to hear! Thanks for the comment!
Excellent! I typed in ecotank for print and cut applications and yours was the first promising video I clicked on. I love your review style and your lovely voice. Oh, and your designs are awesome too!
Excellent creative paper crafting 👍🏼 Recently purchased the Et Epson 2850, so far so good, the main reason for buying it was that is was compatible with my older operating system Mavericks as the other manufacturers printers were not, also the print costs, who doesn't want to save money, as a light user it is a perfect fit for our household. The best advice I can give is to use the USB cable for memory hungry pages with hi-res images, as it prints smoothly instead of stop/starting via the WIFI connection. I also set a weekly reminder on my phone to print a test page to help prevent clogging when not being used. 👍🏼
Glad to hear that model is working for you. I might be purchasing one of those for my home office because my existing home printer is an epson cartridge machine and I really don't want to buy any more carts for that after seeing how well my ecotank is doing at my studio! Thanks for the kind words about my work!
I have had my printer for about 2 years. I cannot print color and heads don't clean from the maintenance menu after many tried. Unless you print regularly color this probably is not the right printer for you, or at the very least you regularly run the maintenance program to clean the nozzles and heads. Would not rebuy this printer.
Sorry to hear. Curious... how long between prints did you go? What do you think you might try next?
Our previous two color printers were inkjets that came free with a computer purchase. We more than made up for the "free" part with stacks of ink cartridges. I haven't shopped for a printer in what seems like forever, and with expensive ink jet cartridges in mind my first impulse was to look for a color laser printer. I came across the "ink tank" concept and was amazed at the idea of not having to replace (or refill) cartridges at all. I just got the ET-4850, and while it's only been a few days, I'm happy with the purchase. As long as we maintain it properly, especially keeping an eye on the maintenance box level, I'm hoping this printer lasts a long, long time.
That’s the dream... and I hope that stays true. Mine is going strong on the first install of ink after a year... zero issues. So I've already received huge value from mine.
I'm wondering how one prints on the back of an already printed page. Does he have to load the page into the front paper tray or is there another way. Currently on my old Epson XP-830 I put the sheet into a rear paper feeder.
This machine is tray fed for sure. It will print two-sided (by printing one side and then self-feeding the paper back into the machine to print the other side without help)... but if you have a sheet that already has print on one side and you want to print on that, you just have to make sure you orient it right in the tray and it will work. (it prints on the face down side as I recall)
Great video. How many pages did you print before having to change ink maintenance box?
I have not had to change the maintenance box yet. I'll do a follow up process when that does happen. (but I don't have any warnings about it yet so I don't know when I will get to that point)
I been scammed by HP printers often....v.v
3:40 The problem apparently is/was that while you can easily replace the sponge you can't reset the warning and epson wants you to send the printer to them to reset it. If they indeed changed their stance on that then that's good to hear. Personally my laser printer just ran out of magenta so thinking of replacing it with one of these since it's bit too large and lacks the scanner.
Yeah, I've had comments on my vids saying that you can reset the printer and others have said they could not. It has not happened to me yet, so I can't comment myself. I will make follow up videos for any issues I do run into over time. I have a question for you... your color laser... historically, I've never been happy with the quality of color laser on anything photographic. (But it has been years since I tried one.) Have they improved them or do they still print kinda "hot" without subtle color tones?
@@KookyCraftables The one i got is definitely not good for photos, details are lost and colors don't seem quite right, mostly just bought it since it was 50 euros on sale. (it's the lexmark CS310n) that was back in 2019 though so maybe newer or more expensive ones are better.
@@IsoMacintosh Thanks for the report. that sounds like what I used to see in my prints off laser. But some people sound off in the comments that I should ditch ink jet and go laser. But that output never got close to good in my eyes. I'll have to try to see a demo of brand new tech, but I bet you'd have to pay a lot for a machine that does a decent job.
@@IsoMacintosh Lexmark are just bad in general, clunky to set up
@@KookyCraftablesLaser will never be as good for foto quality. That’s a known fact and due to how the toner works and doesn’t mix as good as ink.
If you like HP Printers, you're in an abusive relationship. Seek help.
I still remember working as an admin for let's say a clinc and HP reps really said they will only cover warranties if the IT shop breaks a laptop not the other 99% people who work in the building.
Haha
HP used to be the gold standard for business printers. Home printers have pretty much always sucked. But these days.... Well, I got asked to look up printers for work yesterday, and I won't be even looking at HP at all. I'm watching this to find out if there's any issues over time with ecotank. We print stuff almost every day - invoices, brochures, etc. So I don't think clogging would be an issue for us. And now I know the cleaning pad is replaceable at least in these model, I'll feel even safer recommending them. If they still have super low running costs.
Just wanted to say thanks for making both videos on this printer. I will say you really addressed the adamant comments from the last video really well. Also, i didnt even know about paper craft printing like this so although i came here for the printer review im glad i found this type of art.
I am so glad you found both videos helpful and super proud to introduce you to the art of paper craft!
My hope is that the head nozzle is replaceable if it ever clogs badly due to not being used very frequently.
Yep... that was a fear of mine when I bought one too. Fingers crossed it is not an issue. Mine has not clogged yet at all.
The big one
Is that normal a4 paper?
I'm in the US so we use LETTER as our standard 8.5" x 11". But what's cool about paper craft is you can print pages "scale to fit" and a4 is fairly close to LETTER. (But when you do scale to fit, it does reduce the over all size of the craft a little bit.) If you constrain proportions though it's not a problem as long as all the project pages are the same size.
I feel like I prefer the regular flat eyes It has more personality The reshaped eyes just feel a little too "ooh I'm evil"
Cool! (It is amazing how just a slight tilt of the eyes bring on the evil!) Thanks for the comment!
creaking's bult like a tetris block
You're right! Cool observation ;)
The last one looks angry to me
Yep. Totally!
Hello 130 gsm card stock paper did not work your saying but what about 300 gsm and possibly 310 & 320 if you know or had to guess? I have the xp 15000 and been thinking heavy about saving on ink. I’m a digital artist like you. And do photography too. But from what I’m seeing digital quality art is great with that printer and the photo quality was still great too. I might get a eco tank printer that costs about $250 & return my xp 15,000 i do want to get the photo echo tank? You recommend but that’s not in my budget at the moment but if I can come up with the money, I will get it. I am currently printing on 300 gsm glossy card stock paper
To be clear... I was referring to paper weight in POUNDS. When using the GSM number... I know it prints 176 GSM great... and I've printed up to 300 GSM... much above that I would worry about. But remember that my machine has a paper tray so the paper has to curl through rollers pretty dramatically. I think the lower model eco tanks have a top feeder and often times those actually work better for thicker paper since the paper does not have to curl so much. Hope this info helps. If I get a second eco-tank for home use, I might try one of those lower models for that exact reason.
@@KookyCraftables Hello, great video, really helping me, especially for the quality of prints and colors (black looks great). I wanted to know if you had some problems printing on 300gr paper? Did you have to use the specific Epson paper like they advise to do or could you use other type of paper, or brands? I plan to use this to print fanzines, little art books and some Magic the Gathering proxy cards, do you think this printer will work well for me ? thanks for your answers
@@CicaJean I've printed on 300 GSM, but I'd say that is about the max of what it can handle. A top feed/read feed model might do better with thick paper over time (but I don't know). For uncoated paper I just toss any old paper in there. But for coated paper, I usually stick to the EPSON brand paper. But if you're doing fanzines, I don't think coated will fold well for you. The black looks best when you do set it to print on the highest quality. (which is what I like to do when printing nice finished pieces)... all your projects sound really cool! Good luck with it!
@@KookyCraftables hello again, I've got myself the Epson 3850 with a promo (almost the same printer). Trying some different prints to find best settings. I tried to print on a 300gms uncoated cardstock but couldn't make it, the paper always get stuck inside. Could you share some infos about the different papers you use ? Brand, smooth, uncoated, weight? Thanks again 🙏
@@CicaJean When I was testing thicker sheets in my printer, it was paper from a local print shop so I'm not sure the brand. It was uncoated card stock though. My day to day card stock is the lightweight card stock that I guy from Staples (staples brand). My guess is that if you can get paper that's a LITTLE thinner it will feed through there. Mine handled the 300 but not a 310. If you're doing glossy, that might be the deal breaker on thick papers (I don't have glossy paper that thick to test)
Hello and thank you so much for this detailed review. Question- you're printing these projects- what is your experience with this printer's ability to have a highlighter used on ink? or if one of your completed projects gets a drop of water or two on it? Thank you again!
Since this uses liquid inks... I am certain that water drops on it would not be good. A highlighter might work. I have been thinking of making an FAQ video review about this machine soon and if I do, I'll do a live test on film about water and highlighters so you can see the results! Thanks for asking!
This will be free in kooky cradtables
Have the same problem how do you reset it Best buy said they don't know that's where I bought it. Well I'm going to look into an HP
I've not had to reset mine yet. When I was setting it up, the app sort of lost track of the progress of setting up, but I was able to finish with the touch screen.
