The Arizona Department of Health Services’ mission is to promote, protect, and improve the health and wellbeing of all Arizonans. As part of that mission, ADHS licenses, regulates, and provides assistance to healthcare facilities so they can maintain a high standard of care for Arizona residents. In the event that our efforts to provide coaching and corrective action to licensees are not heeded, we must occasionally take the unfortunate step of revoking a healthcare institution’s license. Recently, we were alerted that a senior living facility in Peoria, Avanti Senior Living, instructed residents to secure alternative living arrangements. The guidance did not provide an explicit timeline and misled residents about when the facility’s license was revoked as well as the reason behind the revocation. Despite having over a year to prepare residents for the possibility of the facility’s closure, it appears Avanti denied the reality and severity of the situation and is attempting to pass this off as a mere paperwork error. ADHS notified Avanti over a year ago that the facility’s unresolved pattern of negligent practices had risen to an unacceptable level, and that to preserve the wellbeing of their residents we would be moving to revoke their license. Throughout the process, the Department was willing to negotiate a settlement agreement to avoid revocation, but Avanti chose to fight the Department’s decision through the judicial process. Two courts subsequently upheld ADHS’ decision to revoke Avanti’s license, and an Administrative Law Judge went so far as to say that the facility’s behavior “demonstrated a blatant disregard for rules, procedures, and law.” She is a snake!

Gen Care concepts are great. I moved from Georgia to Washington to live in one of your facilities. Now having been here for a year our new executive director has made it an unpleasant place to live. She does NOT go among the residents to see how things are progressing. Please come see us in Federal Way.

My question to your younger self is why didn't your generation push the boundaries of what's possible and plausible enough to redefine human existence? Modern ambition has become like a clothing catalogue we are sold an off the shelf prefabricated lifestyle because they were the substance of what previously motivated you meaning human uniqueness or individuality is now seen as a problem to solve.....! kmt

This is such a great tip !!! Yes it may seem overwhelming at first but the more we practice with our elders how to use it the more they will get use to it and it will be easy for them. It’s just repeating the motion with them and that’s it. Great advice!!

What you said at the end is great, the message I try to convey to students is that growing old has a set of challenges, but it isn't unique in that regard. All of life is marked by struggle- lots of people spend youth struggling with identity, their bodies, and relationships. And midlife often carries difficulty with parenting, work, money, and family. By old age maybe you've moved past some of those things, and might have many new challenges to deal with, but it's just another rodeo and we shouldn't frame it as a unique decline or struggle.

Thank you for this, I teach college freshmen about ageism in depth. I tend to agree that the most pertinent conversations about ageism have to do with how it has been institutionalized in culture and policy, as opposed to individual examples and attitudes.Things like the mass die off of the elderly during the pandemic, which was just sort of accepted as normal when so many deaths were preventable. Megan is right to channel Margaret Morganroth Gulette on questioning the very meaning of "old" and the underlying stereotypes that alter how people treat the old and interpret their own aging. My students are terrified of getting old and getting wrinkles, largely because the beauty industry has made sure they think the only way to be attractive is to be young. While it's easy to wave off "small" instances of ageism, some would argue that a ton of feathers does add up to a ton, so I'm wary of downplaying them.

My only concern is if I get some serious disease ,at 81, I can't get help .I'd have to be flown back to the states.Medicare Advantage only seems to cover minor things.Thank you for this info.Grace
