    I have a question. My lower lip keeps sliding from within the mouthpiece to the lower edge of the mouthpiece. When this happens, should I let it stay there? Also, how do you prevend this from happening?

      @@JenaGardner Opinion? By subdividing four quarter notes into 16th notes, if one is not playing the dotted eighth with three counts, that is an incorrection performance. Just something Kendall Betts taught me years ago. And that's not opinion. That's measured reality.

      It’s a pleasure to hear a performance with such clear execution and appropriate musical style. Great job, Jena! I would be very happy to hear any of my students emulate this recording. I would be less pleased to hear of them rudely throwing stones from their glass house. Happy practicing!

    My lips are uneven and I feel like it is due to my mouthpiece placement. I have been playing for 4 years and I am a good horn player. I know you said it’s ok if the placement is a little to the left or right, but I feel like my placement is too much tot he left, causing my lips to be asymmetrical/shifted. Could this be because of my mouthpiece placement?

    Recently, I've noticed that when transitioning to the low end, the lower notes don't speak clearly and it seems like air is escaping in the sound. It feels as though my embouchure remains tight from playing in the upper register and doesn't relax sufficiently when I switch. Any good exercises that would help?

    • @JenaGardner

      Keeping your corners firm and forward is essential! Then I like to imagine my lower lip/jaw sliding forward like a drawer. You can practice this just making an embouchure and blowing, then on the horn using the harmonic series. I like to start with middle C to G below, then add the low C when that is feeling good.

    Thank you for such an excellent illustration for forming the embouchure! I am largely self-taught, picking the horn up later in life, and nobody could explain this to me! Most helpful video I have seen about playing the French Horn!

    Great video! I'm wondering about a couple of things. 1) what is the position of the tongue in the mouth when doing breath attacks and 2) where does the tongue make contact during articulation (i.e. behind the teeth, between the teeth, etc)?

    • @jenagardner1136
      @jenagardner1136 3 роки тому

      Hi Eva! Great question. 1) I like to say or think “who” when doing breath starts, keeping the tongue mostly down. However, the arch of the tongue varies depending on the pitch (air speed). The front of the tongue should stay out of the way and down. 2) this is also varied based on the range. For me, I get the best articulation when the tip of my tongue hits the front of my hard palette, right above the teeth (as in saying To or Do). As I play into the lower range of the horn I get a clearer sound with the tongue hitting between the teeth. Everyone is different and you should do some experimenting while listening to the impact on sound. I also recommend you check out the Sarah Willis MRI video for a great visual of what’s happening.

    This is great advice for improving accuracy on the horn for both the note being played and intonation. Have you considered doing a horn hack video on tuning the different sides of the double horn to match, and maybe when it's better to play the F side and when it's better to play the Bb side? Also, how about one on playing stopped horn? Thank you for this series. I'm liking it quite a bit.
