Honestly? Not in 50 years.

I have one good tube amp and everything else is amp sims. I haven't played live in a few years - mostly just writing and recording at home. When I do play live again, I'll probably get the UA Dream 65 and maybe a Fender FR-12. I like using my pedalboard, so probably won't switch to a Helix or other similar unit. With that said, there's something about a great amp cranked in the room that can't be replaced.

awesome video man, recently been trying to hone in on the audio engineering side of things and some things get me discouraged. i won't give this up though, music is in my soul. failure is just a speed bump, not a road block :) be willing to get a less than perfect reaction when you share things, and understand that for every person that doesn't see the vision, there's one more around the corner that could end up becoming your top listener

I'd recommend putting your most interesting point first, cables are a good point but I almost clicked off the video when your first point was Software which like the least hidden cost in music production.

I use both, the modelers are great, but nothing touches a valve amp for the experience of physicality of the electric guitar and amplifier interacting with each other and with your body in the same room. I gig live solo guitar once or twice a week using an HX Stomp as a pedal platform/looper direct to the PA and it sounds great, is responsive, I can toy with feedback to some extent and everything but it is not the same as a proper guitar amp. The shuffle looper is a godsend, but again, I still crave the “amp feel” and play differently with an overdriven tube amp.

I still dig my tube amps, purchased a couple this year ('76 Fender Super Twin, Marshall SL-X 2100, and DSL40CR). I enjoy playing these at home, but if I could I'd gig with one of my tube combos...I have around 10 tube amps, most 50 and 100W, nothing under 40W; the Super Twin is 180W driving a matched sextet of 6L6GC power tubes...I love it loud. For modelers, I have a Helix Floor, and Catalyst 100 + HX-Effects I use in 4CM, with the HX-FX changing the amp channels, and have the amp boost mapped to a footswitch - great lightweight versatile rig. That said, I use a computer software rig for guitar, in a Dell rugged touchscreen tablet. While I have many guitar plugins, I made this because of PolyChromeDSP - McRocklin Suite because it's that good. I use BlueCat Audio's PatchWork to organize patches, and they have great utilities such as noise gate, gain, level, and more... so I can balance the levels and between different patches without going into the actual plugin editor. Finally, I use a KMI SoftStep2 MIDI floorboard to change patches, and it also supports an expression pedal. I'm done with hardware modelers for now; I can do everything in software and I don't need a dedicated hardware modeler, high performance computer or high end audio interface; and I can use the same patches live and in my DAW; and I can upgrade the computer, computer components, interface, etc. as needed for much lower cost. What a bunch of crap 😅I love my Iridium, loved Kemper, Fractal and UAD Dream 65 that I played, they sound and feel amazing but it's just not the same thing as an amp and pedals. Not better or worse, just different and that's why a lot of people just want an amp. And sorry, but if your only experience with a real amp is a Blackstar, you don't know what you're missing man

I used every type of Amps in my 16 years of Playing... "Simple" solid State Amps like Vox Pathfinder 10, Johnson Stage 30 and so on, "light modelers" like Line 6 Spider 3, SoundDrive Mighty 20 (I hope its the correct Name), Hybrid Amps like Fame/Mega Amps T64, Single Channel Tube Amps like Epiphone Valve Junior, E-Wave DG5H or Fame Tube 5 (Fender Champ 600 clone) and also bigger Tube Amps like Hughes & Kettner Statesman Dual EL34, Marshall DSL40cr, Fame V5012 (Randall RG50r I think, but with an other Label - both are the Same Smarvo Amp). And yeah, I also tried "real" modelers...physical ones like the Kemper and Software Base like Amp Locker, Bias FX, Bias Amp and so on. The Software Modelers are great for "fast recording" and Live-streaming, I also tried it live and it works, but it doesn't give me a really good feeling, although it sounded very great! Solid State and light Modelers are fine for Teaching. Hybrids are great if you want a tube-like Sound with the flexibility for Volume that you can get from Solid State Powerstages. Single Channel Tube Amps are awesome for practicing - because they mostly don't forgive any mistakes and you can practice incredibly good how to pick the Strings to got result a, b or c...like playing clean with soft picking, getting a Rhythm Tone with mid picking and Lead Sound with hard Picking or how to play a Flanger without having a flanger (yes, it's possible). But I NEVER wanna ever play on Stage without my Real Tube-Amps. It's just the feeling, the direct sound and the dynamic, you only can get (or maybe its only in my head...don't know) from a real Tube Amp, that moves real Air! I'm not using any pedals (okay, a wah, a tuner and the Amp-Footswitch) and in that way, I can hear and feel my Guitar, the Amp and the Speaker(s) so much better and more realistic. Are Modelers bad or for everyone? Nothing of both...they sound incredibly good nowadays and they are easy to carry with you. Are Tube Amps bad or for everyone? Same here! If you don't like to bring heavy stuff from here to there, than don't get one....but if you love the feel and sound of a Tube Amp, it's worth it! Are Hybrids or Solid State Amps bad or for everyone? Also Same here! They were getting better and better in the past 10 Years and you can gig with most of the actual Amps on the market...not every model, to be honest, but with the most of it! They are Awesome for practicing, they are nearly undestroyable if you don't push them to hard with Pedals and they can sound great from low to high Volumes. So like nearly everything: It's not Black or White, it's what YOU prefer. Play a Gear you like, you trust and you feel comfortable with - no matter which brand, size or technology. It's a Tool that should inspire you and let you be the best musician you can be! Just have fun and spend fun and love! :D

It depends. Rehearsals I always use a modeler. But live I love to use a combo amp, but I use a DI for in ears.

I think amps will be a luxury thing that people bust out when they fit the image they are projecting. A lot of kids today literally have never played through a tube amp. For them, they think why would I have a tube amp when I could have a million different amps that change whenever I want and in a smaller package? In a lot of ways, they are right. But at the same time, there will always be musicians that show off their tube amps and it becomes part of the show. Joe Bonamassa is doing that now, but vintage amps are the curiosity. You'll see that w/ big acts, but as time goes on it will be less and less for smaller acts.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to creating art. It's that simple. Yes, it's way more convenient to create a piece of visual art using a tablet, that doesn't mean that artists are going to stop using paint and canvas, it just means there are more options for expression. Physical amps, modelers, plugins, IR loaders, etc, all these things are tools. And they all have their pros and cons. I've lived happily in both worlds since the late 90s when I started playing guitar. The only people who are wrong in this argument are the ones who believe there is only one right answer. You can have a preference to your work flow, that's great. But there is no singular way to do anything when it comes to creating music, and to be bull headed enough to the point you believe your way is the only correct way is against the entire ethos of art and creative expression.

Maybe for a new generation of players. I've been playing since 1990. It is a tube amp or nothing for me. If anyone actually thinks modelers sound like a tube amp then I feel sorry for you. Get yourself a Mesa Boogie Mark series amp, like my Mark III and dial in a tone. There's nothing like it. No chorus, no delay, small amount of reverb depending on the room and just FEEL the difference. My guitars sing through my amp.

Tubes for the studio, modeler for live. The difference is not enough for the majority of people to notice, thus bringing in, and hooking up something like a tonex or helix is much nicer than breaking your back with a 100w head and 4x12. Being able to hook straight in to the mixer and not blowing away the front crowd is also nice

I use two half stacks & a bunch of pedals in stereo. lovely tubey goodness!! I want loudness & thickness on stage. i can't get that with modelers in my ignorant opinion. the amount of times I've seen digital rig bands with thin sound, due to bad sound/mix or lack of speakers on stage. I don't have that problem lol. plus loading in & out for gigs counts as some of my daily exercise. ps : playing music live is just adult show & tell. my guitar playing sucks but my rigs rad 🤣

In my band, I literally use a Helix as my effects, and Amp emulation, then use a Behringer NX3000 to power a custom cab. I get never ending compliments about the tone from musicians and audience members alike. Best investment I ever made. Lol

Still need amps just not stacks, racks and power amps. Still gotta practice. A band is better off with putting that money in their PA, mics and a computer with DAW and plugins now.

What do you use for monitoring at gigs? I can't/don't like the idea of IEMS (expense and comfort for me). Currently I'm looking at some 200-300 watt bass amps to power 2x12 (either 2 112 or a 212 cab).

Ok the fact that were not bashing one side i really respect we need more of that in the space. As some one that has used both I m a Tube amp guy its looks cool but to me gives a massive sound difference. The amp modelers are great too cuz for anyone that doesn't have tons of money to drop you can get close to the real thing and seeing if you like it without leaving with a empty wallet. End of the day what ever makes someone make music for the joy of will always win for them. Cheers great vid and subbed!

Used gear from trusty brands is always the way to go. I hope Audient get the same reputation as RME and Motu, drivers updated almost forever and for every old piece as the new ones. If I knew Focusrite would abandon us like that I would have gone Motu in the past. I'll probably get an EVO 16 in the future and use my two Saffire PRO 40's as ADAT extensions only for 24 channels total.

Actually the Rockman sounded amazing. I would argue that it would hold up to many of today's modelers.

Well said. I love buying old tech and music gear. I recently got an old windows XP computer and one of the earliest audio interfaces to see what early computer music production was like. I've also gotten into old Peavey amps, while they were still being made in the USA.

1. you can create a template in your daw for live play 2. you can start the daw automatically on boot 3. you can put your computer to sleep and wake up instantly 4. you can filter your sound library to show your favourites only 5. midi keyboards have faders and knobs these days 6. the sound libraries you can get are 10x better quality than any hardware sample library, etc.

This is a really refreshing take to hear. There is so much amazing older/outdated gear out there that it's honestly really hard for me to justify buying anything brand new. Really enjoyed this and your other videos!

I use older equipment in everything. I always used slightly outdated computers which are maxed out with ram, etc. So this is good advice, save money - save time, and upgrade later if need be. Purchasing recording studio gear is a very fast way to go broke especially in this era we are in.

There are few benefits I'm only now starting to appreciate with an actual keyboard synth vs a MIDI keyboard: 1. Onboard sounds. Sometimes I don't feel like opening my DAW and opening my favourite sounds to play or practice, I just want to turn on the keyboard, connect headphones and do that. Plus, I don't have a permanent setup since I'm currently with my parents so time to inspiration or quickly hashing out an idea is crucial, because if the OS or DAW decides to freeze or update when I want to practice or note an idea down, I'll feel demotivated to do so. 2. Action. The action and feel on MIDI keyboards a hit and miss for me. I've got an AKAI Advance 49, love the feel of the white keys but the black keys are a bit shorter than regular black keys and stiffer (I don't know why AKAI thought of doing it that way) so it makes it a bit challenging to play/solo when using the black keys but not too much to hinder playing. Keyboard actions on the actual keyboard tend to me a bit more standard, plus they are normally shared across a varierty of keyboards in the range, so it's easier to go into a music store and test the action of a Yamaha (GHS, NWX, BHE etc) vs a MIDI controller. 3. Functionality. Like you said, keyboards have a much better functionality than MIDI keyboards, and since I carry my phone more than my laptop, I can use my phone together with the keyboard to supplement sounds if I need to. I'd need a bit more time and equipment to setup with just a MIDI keyboard (interface, cables, and make sure I've setup the right channels), but I bet it'd be quicker to do it with a keyboard. Maybe my answer will change when I get a house/apartment and get older, but for now keyboard is the way to go for me, so much so that I'm waiting for the new Roland Juno-D to hit the stores so I can see what it offers.

I value what you say in this video. I have described myself as a recent retiree and aspiring songwriter and composer. But I realize that it is a copout. If I wish to earn the right to call myself “aspiring”, I should spend much more of my time working on my craft than I do playing time-waster games, watching UA-cam videos, writing comments, and shopping for music software. Perhaps a better title for this video, to match the points you were making, would have been, “Why You Should Stop SAYING You are an Aspiring Musician and Start BEING One.”
