Red versus Blue: Slime Mold Civil War
Motivated by the parallels with social group dynamics which emerge from individual behavior, we modify the mathematical models of motion of the slime mold Physarum Polycephalum to allow for two distinct species which compete for resources and territory. By exploring the parameter space of these new models and the dependence on initial conditions, a rich array of patterns can be discovered. Sometimes a single species becomes dominant, and sometimes an intermingling of species results. In extreme cases the results are unstable and lead to mutual destruction.

      The "voxels" can deform into parallelpipeds. So, not quite as general as a hexahedron.
