    Now try this same rescue, only lifting a full grown unconscious person (dead weight) out of the water. No need to do the maneuvers to reach the MOB. Just do different scenarios getting a full grown preferably non responsive adult back on board. Title for this episode should read "Bouy over board drill in 20kts of wind" Not Man Over Board.

    First thing to all the doubters is that the title is "drill" not "how to". Good to see it in higher winds as most are in flat calm. The guy certainly knows his boat and one assumes had a MOB alert for position but in real world you'd have to crash tack and accept your spinnaker would get torn to shreds. Cut the rope to let it fly, drop main sail, get the engine on and roll away the jib as you head back. Of course you ain't gonna lose a spinnaker in a drill so one wonders what use this is really?

    This reminds me of a scene from the movie "Slaughterhouse 5" where the main character has been in an airplane accident and his hyper wife jumps in the big car, yelling "Im coming" and in her rush to get there crashes into several things and ends up killing herself in a final accident.

    First time i see a mob rescue in a kind of realistic situation: windy, single handed and with spi set.

    Bs'd To many puzzles? Without stopping the boat, by the time we get the spinnaker under control our MOB is so far a stern we'd need a miracle to to ever find'em again. So, thank the Great Navigator above we return to our waterlogged and by now terrified shipmate spot'em back there, and forget to stop so's to make the grab safely and easily. May y'all be blessed from above for success in real life.

    Bs'd Perhaps if we watched a few times, we might have a clue how we got back to our friend in the water, but a little dialog almost always helps

    This exercise is totally unrealistic and completely useless. Just for laughing. Wait until you have to grab a 80 kg wet man out of the water. The Procedures followed are totally unacceptable and amateuristic.

    Only excellent skipper can do this job. He is doing somethink every time, he can’t see the little blue protection. He is incredible and skillfully.

    Nobody mentioned that you can't pull a person out of the water on a run. They'll be going 5 knots minimum and holding onto a MOB and lifting them is impossible.

    Way too long to return to the mob. You release the spiniker's sheet and guy, let it fly like a flag,,,,,,spin the boat around, brining int he sails to sail back up wind,. oh boy this crew needs a lot more work.

    Belle manœuvre. After the failed upwind approach, you can't hope to pick it up going downwind at 2kn. The only option is to redo it.

    Overshot the MOB a bit, left way too much distance between vessel and MOB, quick stop or figure 8 would have worked a lot better

    Wow! It's amazing the captain can even SEE the "crew" in the water, much less get that spinnaker down and maneuver around the thing without losing sight of it. He is sailing directly downwind AWAY from the thing with his back to it - on a very fast boat in strong wind. How did he even find it again? How did he turn the boat around directly to where it was at? Is he using the chart plotter and a MOB button to find it? Bravo!

    I winced a bit on the gybe, but its easy to judge from an armchair.

  • @chriswaters8602

    I can't believe how bad this is. Rule number 1, stop the boat. Spinnaker? Head to wind, clew tight, pole to forestay, drop the spinnaker halyard and gather if you can. Release the halyard and roughly secure the spinnaker. Position yourself below the MOB about 30 metres to leeward and about 100 metres out laterally, (either side). Let the headsail sheet go, work the main by hand. Creep up to the MOB, head to wind with the MOB on the windward side. Never gybe. There's enough to do without having to deal with that.

    Like Pior Says, we use the autopilot when not helming, in transat races, you sleep by short periods of 20 to 30 minutes max at a time.

  • @piotrp9325
    @piotrp9325 11 років тому

    They have autopilot. This how much time they can sleep depends of weather; if it's stable they can sleep more; if not, they didn't sleep.

    This is a series boat so no canting keel. Even with a canting keel you stack all the movable ballast to windward and trim fore & aft with it watch Lucas Schroder- Changing Course a lot of work

  • @Ki8eran
    @Ki8eran 13 років тому

    canting keels are very expensive and on generally on proto boat. but minis will spend long durations on tacks so its worth putting the extra weight on the high side.

  • @mouse746
    @mouse746 13 років тому

    Don't these boats have canteen keels? why so much weight on deck at 0:39
