The Lost Potential of My Hero Academia
This video was originally started over 3 years ago, it went through many drafts and as time waned on I had essentially dropped the project. Until MHA decided it was ending sooner than I would have liked.
I don't touch on everything in this video, as there is a LOT to talk about when it comes to my opinions on MHA. But what I do focus on is what I am *most* passionate about and I think it does a good job at expressing my feelings on the series after all this time. This is my personal sendoff to MHA.
PLEASE go check out my friends and their channels!! They both have videos of their own covering MHA that I got the chance to work on w/them, so if you get anything from this video let it be their channels and the incredible amount of work they put in to them

I didn't even get halfway through with the editing process and by that point it wasn't even fully applicable to his character given what happens in the manga. So, in spite of that...

I think this might be the reason why there are SO many fanfictions about my hero academia. This manga has so much potential for so many different storylines that it's almost like the perfect canvas to write a brand new fiction on.

You didn't mention it, so maybe you don't know about it, but mha illegals/vigilantes taps into a lot of the untapped potential in the setting. Especially the nature of heroism when it's been "commodified", and even a much better look at how mutants are treated I'm actually hoping with the anime about to drop it'll finally get the love it deserves

7:45 quickly!? It took bro ONE HUNDRED CHAPTERS TO TRY KICKING The pacing of the series was always a bit weak for me, especially in this specific context of a character shown to have heroes as a literal special interest taking way too long to explore his own power set. I feel like midoriya taking notes on other heroes and theory crafting their quirks was not paid off in any way. I'm not saying he should have instantly had control over regulation of his percentage, but bro should've at least tried to find creative work arounds much sooner. Imagine a midoriya actually using his hero nerd notebook as inspo to try out more than just a punch or a flick

Bakugous character and the way he impacts Deku as a character is so interesting but frustrating. By the time I’d started reading the manga and realized so much of the build up was for nothing it just made me angry. Yearning for what could have been. For Bakugou and Deku to not change all much is absolutely ridiculous. In my opinion Bakugou the most, it seemed like his misguided views on society just kind of didn’t change. Sure he chilled out but his motivations to become a hero we’re practically the same and I don’t know if Horokoshi made this point as a way to show how people in privileged positions don’t see or feel the need for their to be changed but it’s a little disappointing imo. I will always yearn what could have been with those two. Rip prime DEKU you would hated the time skip chapter 💔

I think the point was that Deku needed to hear it from them. Thats why he is who he is, he's anxious and in a state of shock, he went from thinking he's worthless and everybody telling him that to in a couple of years being everything he's ever wanted. His only choice was to be thankful because he felt like he didn't deserve it. Not only that but he was never looked at as special as he actually was until they come clean about one for all. He was competing against the person he felt like as a kid that's why he left because he saw too much destruction. Every time someone was hurt, he felt like that worthless kid again. Deku pours his emotions into everything, he never got to process that dramatic change in responsibility he was holding so much while just pleasing others more and more he needed to remove the emotion and double down on his responsibilities. I don't think he believed anybody respected him He had been spiraling for so long he needed to hear a loved one's voice to silence the ones in his head. Plus, after something that therapeutic the last thing he would want was more therapy or special treatment so as goofy as the bath thing was it was probally exactly what he wanted at the time.

Great take and yh i felt like the story could have been more better... back in 2021 i watch s1 and it was alright but i couldn't stand bakugo behaviour towards midoriya because it reminded me how i was bullied when i was in primary school so i stopped watching and because the fandom was too annoying.. Now i finished it the series plus movies and manga and i have to say it could have been more and what i m mean by 'more' is that they could have went more into midoriya mental health issues and some of the challenges he face - i just feel like he just brushes his own feelings and self worth for others and that makes me sad for him because the society he grows up in everyone wants to be a hero and have these amazing quirks and he doesn't. I really feel sorry for him but when he gets all might quirk i was like 🙄 he could have been in the support course or something.. i also felt like he could have trained before knowing all might to actually see him trying to achieve his goal.. second thing about midoriya where is his father because why do in most animes ppl don't have parents/fathers it really pissed me off because he could had that support from a make figure - not saying his mum didn't do enough but i just wish we could to see him talk to his father.. at least once thirdly why aren't the quirkless people talk enough like the only quirkiness people we know are deku , anyoma and melissa (movie 1). The author should have included people on how they face challenges in everyday life because they faced discrimination just because they don't have a quirk and I felt like deku reasoning to become a hero is should have been that quirkless people don't feel like they're not special just because they don't have a quirk... 😞 Another point bakugo... i feel like bakugo character is bit messy don't get me wrong i like his character later on but he isn't my favourite he reminds me of an ex best friend (she would call me mean names and stuff) i feel like his reason to bully deku wasn't good enough and his apology was a bit ass (i know this is fiction but could have been a bit better) like the author should have did research on why people bully other ppl or sm.. Another point i HAVE TO MADE IS DEKU obsession with bakugo like deku admires bakugo too much and it feels like victim x bully in the early seasons, like they could have changed that no wonder why people ship them 💀 (i don't ship anyone in mha tbh) People excuse bakugo behaviour because he's " attractive " like i understand he's good looking but you can't excuse his actions because they have consequences that affect ppl.. like deku self esteem is really low and i thought mine was worst.. I liked the villains in mha but i don't really like shigaraki like i understand he's was manipulated by all for one but he acts too damn childish and immature for my liking... Also let me talk about that damn ending the ending for me was ok it was sad that deku lost his power but in my opinion im happy he doesn't have it so he doesn't keep breaking bones like my dude relax and the dead ppl can stop talking to him (they pissed me off)😭 and he did achieve his goal for becoming "the world greatest hero" and now he teaches in ua i didn't mind that.. but overall mha could have been more better if they fixed and changed some stuff i still rate the series 9/10

Up until season 2 of the anime, it felt like MHA was on a whole other level, Horikoshi felt like writing genius, like he had figured out the shonen formula but also knew how to be different and what he wanted to do, It literally felt like he had planned mostly everything out and we were witnessing the next great legend, a true monumental succesor to the Shonen genre, Everyone was hyped and loved MHA. As a manga reader I still was enjoying reading it up until the war arc, that was when it really started losing me and a few more chapters after that, i dropped it especially dealing with delusional fanboys who would attack anybody who had any sort of differing opinion or critique on the story, they are the reason I have no qualms about MHA falling off and ending the way it did, They deserved what they got, I only feel bad for Horikoshi-sensei, He had too high expectations set on him and I know he was going through a lot, I don't blame him so much.

The show stopped being about Deku learning and going from the bottom to the top, deku learned like 4 powers from season 6-7. He only had 3 up to that point. Then he beats the villain and loses it all in a single chapter, just to get a time skip and a new power on the last page. I just feel like the payoff wasn’t worth it. Kid willing to die to save the world just to lose his power and become a teacher? I like the bittersweetness of it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wanna see him be the new #1 and having the power to save his loved ones without sacrificing himself. I think what makes it worse is knowing the whole story takes place in his freshman year, which I think was the worst part of it all.

I'm probably twice your age, but it was interesting hearing your perspective and recognizing how it mimicked my own with a different shounen almost two decades prior. Was super into it very early on, got caught up in analyzing and studying characters, and then eventually fell away from it when I felt it let me down, ending with having this great yearning for what the series could have been. I think because of that, I went into MHA far more detached. I read/watched and enjoyed it, but I stayed away from thinking about it too deeply. So it was interesting hearing your thoughts on Deku because, they did make sense, but I'd never processed it for myself before so I'd never really viewed him too seriously. ...maybe that doesn't make sense, but the point is that I could tell that MHA had lost something along the way, but I'd never bothered to try and pinpoint what that was, and this video really does spell it out plainly. And, funny thing, in a way, it seems like basically the same sort of thing that killed my interest in the other shounen - character build up without proper payoff. I think as a casual fan, MHA is fine. But hearing your passion and frustration for what could have been, I just can't help but relate and wish it could have been better. Hang on to the good times with it, and try not to get too caught up in the bad.

The final straw with this series for me was when they ruined Toga. I was so hyped for Toga to finally get her redemption arc. All the buildup and development for it was there, but instead, Horikoshi completely skipped over her isolation arc, which is oddly similar to Deku's if you think about it, abandoning all the development that was promising for her, just for her to die fighting Ochako. I was expecting to see Toga go through a redemption arc just as deep and satisfying as Endeavor's, and perhaps maybe, even go from villain to hero in the end, but no. The series just bails on all of that potential completely. Toga having an obvious soft side buried under her rage and impulses slowly being pulled out of her by Deku and Ochako is what had me cheering for her to redemption. We were shown time and time again, especially through her close bond with Twice, that beneath all of that psychopathy is a normal girl with a big heart just in desperate need of healing just waiting to be pulled out of her through some love and compassion that she had never received before for once. She was in a way, like Deku. A once normal girl abandoned by the world in need of saving that was just waiting for her right around the corner. She's basically what Deku could've become. A villain vengeful towards the world, but with the potential to turn back to goodness. This is what made her my favorite character in the whole series. All of that potential for nothing. What a painful letdown. It hurts so bad just imagination what could've been. We could've had Toga teaming up with the heroes in the end, or something else epic and heartwarming like that, but alas. Sorry for the wall of text, but this just pisses me off more than anything else about MHA's rushed third act. We were robbed so badly.

i will truly never forgive Toshinori for reinforcing Izuku's psychological disorders rooting in the ableism he's faced to be validated as "of course you should feel that way, without a power, you're nothing". no matter how positively he always frames things, he encourages this little boy to become a child soldier, hurting himself constantly for the sake of others. it's outright disturbing how Izuku, much like Tenko, was *groomed* into becoming the next him.

    • @SyncXmA
      @SyncXmA 2 місяці тому

This was something I was wish was better explored, I touch on it a bit but Toshinori was also quirkless and during VH and act 1/2 the groundwork had been laid (and was beginning to be capitalized on) with Toshinori’s guilt at turning Deku into this mini old him, the same one nighteye tried to help and ultimately left. It would’ve been amazing to see this explored better and get a real dialogue out of that

The lunch scene where he starts crying but can't tell the truth really hit me because he just can't keep up the "i'm fine" mask anymore. I definitely wished we'd get more moments like that where other students actually get to listen to him and help him.

I feel the same way, it's like everything started out extremely fresh and compelling, then Horikoshi just called it in and caved to fandom demands- like shoehorning Bakugo in as a more important character to focus on wtf- It was Izuku, iida, and Todoroki (don't even get me started on how Endeavor's abuse is just glossed over and forgiven) initially and I thought they were gonna be the Big 3 and then oop what does Iida even do after he gets sidelined? Izuku was the reason MHA resonated with me so much and made me feel so strongly for the story and his journey to maybe even reshape the flawed system of heroes- but we never get it.

They could have lengthened Deku's "vigilante" arc. Have him acquire every stocked OFA quirk slowly. Gave him time to master every single one, that would make him actually "earn" each of it. Instead what we had was "oh deku you are not ready for this quirk." then deku proceeds to dismantle the enemy the first time he uses it. It just does not feel earned.

the ACTUALL lost potential of MHA is that they lost chance to make Deku into smart character. at the start he was a supehero geek, who was making notes about every hero and knew a lot about thier abilities and how they use them. but then he just got "one for all" and the autor throw that part of him out. we could get MC who study villians powers and creats optimal ways to defeat them, but instead we got "left, right, good night" type of MC...

I was perhaps a bit too old when MHA first started coming out, so I didn't get into the story for quite as long and quite as hard as you. But I definitely was there alongside everyone else during the first season. And I definitely saw promise. But even back in season 2 it felt kind of like is this it? Don't get me wrong there are some absolutely epic moments and I remember watching a ton of MHA videos which got me hyped for where the story was going and how unique some of the quirks were. But inevitably whenever I revisited the anime I would always get disappointed until I finally dropped the show all together in season 4 or 5. To me MHA is a story with a ton of potential, but one that just never could quite stick the landing. Listening to youtubers describe the story and it's speculating on it's probable continuation simply always felt more satisfying to me than what the author would actually do. And that's quite sad, because MHA really could have been the next big anime after the big 3. To some extent it still was. But where I can see myself revisiting my childhood favorite (Naruto) in 10-20 years. I feel like MHA will be there alongside the shows from the 80s and 90s that nobody remembers anymore.

  • @TheAzulmagia

Deku starts the series by valuing One for All, a power given to him by another person, and ultimately winds up putting more stock in it than himself. Despite continually being told not to put All Might on a pedestal, Deku still continues to do so, eventually replacing his hero worship of All Might with his worship of the Quirk One for All and the legacy he inherited from the vestiges. He continues to engage in self-destructive behavior to the point that Bakugo, his former bully, has to call him out and tell him to stop. And then he ends the story getting a power suit, which he will undoubtedly put more stock into than himself because it's the only thing that allows him to be a hero. So in the end, he didn't grow. He didn't gain any introspection. He just changed the object of his fixation.
