From Australia, you can't go much darker than the 1957 Nevil Shute novel "On The Beach", set in Victoria in 1964 after World War III with cobalt-salted nuclear bombs. Basically the north hemisphere is dead, and the last escaping American submarine has come down to Australia, and in a few months the highly deadly radioactive fallout from the northern hemisphere, will drift south down to Australia, basically making humanity extinct. It was made into a film starring mostly Americans in 1959 by Stanley Kramer and made again into a two-part TV miniseries starring mostly Australians in 2000, with Bryan Browne, Rachel Ward, Grant Bowler, and Jacqueline Mackenzie. You can find the 2000 version on UA-cam for free.

My favorite part of Oblivion level ups are those quotes you get . "It's the most amazing thing, yesterday it was hard, and today it is easy. Just a good night's sleep and yesterday's mysteries become today's masteries" I also don't like to use potions in elder scrolls, partly because I'm a hoarder, but mainly because being able to pause the action to recover from all your mistakes at a minor gold cost feels pretty cheesy. Something like Dark Souls estus system would be an improvement.
