A summary if u wanna write it down in your notes: Scientists use a device called a "seismograph" to record data about seismic waves 0:25 - 0:40 There are two kinds of waves: ◽0:47 body waves, that travel within the body of earth, are either 1- primary/p waves: 0:56 They compress and expand, meaning they move back and forth in the direction of the wave. They are called primary waves because they are the first to show up at seismic recording stations. They move through solids, liquids, and even gases. 2- secondary/s waves: 1:16 Moving in a shearing or crosswise motion, perpendicular to the direction of travel (up and down/side to side) They are called secondary waves because they always arrive after the primary waves at seismic recording stations. Unlike p-waves, s-waves can only travel through solid materials. ◽surface waves: 1:42 After P-waves and S-waves move across the earth's body, surface waves, which travel along earth's surface. They only travel through solid material. And although slower, surface waves spread on a wider scale, meaning they are larger and more destructive Surface waves has two types of waves: 1:59 : Love waves, and Rayleigh waves, named after the scientists who identified them. 1- Love waves: 2:07 Moving in a horizontal motion, swaying side-to-side, perpendicular to the direction it's traveling in, Love waves are the faster among the two surface waves. 2- Rayleigh waves: 2:21 They move in an elliptical pattern, similar to that observed in ocean waves.
