    Thank you for this video! I usually mix the open acrylics with the heavybody ones, too, to balance that thinness but still get the slightly slower drying time. I rarely if ever use them on their own, or even at more than like 30% of the mixture, so I very much related to your voice-over haha. It's a bit of an awkward product that strangely works wonderfully for me but ONLY in specific mixes. I really love your paintings, your color choices like that teal next to the blueberries are perfect! <3

      Thank you! That’s really cool that you’ve learned the best ratios for your work. I love learning about how different people use their mediums. There is so much creativity in it

      I have loads of open paints and never thought about mixing them with my regular acrylics. Do you wait the recommended 30 days before varnishing the finished paintings when you use open? I've been avoiding using the opens because of the long wait for the paint to fully cure xx

    • @mckenziekvalsten
      @mckenziekvalsten 7 місяців тому

      I use Gamvar varnish by Gamblin because it’s made so you only have to wait for the paint to dry before you varnish (rather than fully cure). It definitely speeds things up! I haven’t had any issues in the years I’ve used it :) (Although I’ve mostly used it on oil paintings! I’m not positive that it’s the same with open acrylics, although I have used it on those after a week)

    Great video. I wonder if using regular paints with the Open white, would increase the time a bit at least when making lighter tints. such as cloud blending into sky.

    • @mckenziekvalsten
      @mckenziekvalsten 7 місяців тому

      That’s a really good question! I bet you’re right. I think would be great for blending larger areas like skies

    I tested WN Artisan against Cobra and Daniel Smith water mixable oils. Cobra and Daniel Smith were pretty close. Artisan water-mixable were lower quality than the other two. Daniel Smith has 37 colors, but they discontinued them as in December, 2023 😠. Cobra has 70 water mixable oils artist colors in the 40ML tube and 48 in the 150ml tubes

    I've been wanting to try out oil paints (a goal for the new year!) but because I paint in our living room/kitchen etc area, I'm hesitant. Also, we have a cat. I remember trying similar water soluble oil paints a decade or so ago and apparently, they've improved the formula a lot! This makes me really want to give these another try! I also didn't know we could combine them with (some) regular oil painting mediums so that's super interesting... the idea of starting to accumulate a new paint collection sounds a bit intimidating, tho. :'D And I loved that little mention of your art teacher recommending not using white... that sounds like a good challenge for future painting! I loved that second piece you painted here, especially!

      It's always a challenge trying to find ways to paint inside the home, for sure! I hope you are able to give these a second chance, I was happy with how they worked and I hope they work out for you, too.

    Install a bathroom exhaust fan into the room you are using, it helps a lot with fumes. Maybe need an exhaust wall that pro paint shops use behind the work space, easy to build and can probably work with an exhaust fan also.

    I find commissions to be really nerve wracking. I always fear they will be disappointed. I also don't like "having" to paint something. I resist it for some reason. I like painting because I'm super excited about it and because I can't wait to bring an idea into reality. On the business side, I think of commissions as dead money. They are time consuming and I only get paid for them once. Unlike a painting I can turn into a print and profit from again and again.

    I'm binging your videos right now - I love your honesty! And you bringing up the support network is really interesting... I had to focus a lot on commissions and client work in general for most of my "career" as I was the main income provider in our relationship most of the time, and it's usually during the summer months when my husband's work is more stable (yay tourism-related work during a pandemic, btw) that I can take it a bit slower, and take risks like creating personal paintings or prints that might or might not work out. Safety really is a huge factor in art, and I appreciate that you're going in so much detail about it! Temp work seems like a great solution! I usually take on art teaching classes during winter if I need some additional safety. :) Not being all or nothing with an art career is so important, as you can never know what life throws at you! (Also: Your paintings are beautiful, I love your videos! Thank you for creating these!)

  • @evydraws-art
    @evydraws-art Рік тому

    I'm very much a commission artist, as it's my largest focus and income source - though a lot of those are for publishers and small companies, which I feel is easier than private clients, as they usually have an art director or at least a clear guideline for what they want! I love doing character portraits (or regular portraits) especially, but yeah, it can be stressful and tiring to keep up communication and scheduling, so I hope to balance it better with my personal work in the future. This is actually really motivating to switch from - as you say - working on (only) other people's dreams to painting my own. ❤ And oof, the idea of asking an artist to copy another artist is icky. Good that you stuck to your style!

    Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem, but could you take an unused print block and weight it or clamp it down over the print you're gluing, so it meets all the way around because it's the same sized block, keeping the print from lifting? Thanks for the video! So exciting to sell your prints locally.

    If you set timer delay on your camera - 2 or 3 seconds is usually enough, it gives the camera chance to settle down after being touched and should stop any blur in the images. Or depending on the model you may be able to control the camera from your phone. 🙂 As to the extraneous light from the window while trying to photograph your art, just get a piece of card or similar to put in front of the window to block the light. That way you can control the light landing on your art from your lights.

    Hey from a fellow new artist! I've just made a similar video about my first year as an artist and can relate to a lot of what you say! It was interesting to hear about what you've learned! How do you find the shows that you need to pay to participate in? They all seem to be free here in France, except in Paris I guess. I think maybe shows that you pay to participate in would attract more serious buyers? Best of luck to you and your art journey, from a new subscriber! Jane x

    • @mckenziekvalsten
      @mckenziekvalsten Рік тому

      Hello! Yay its fun to meet other artists in the wild :D I find most of the shows through a website called Zapplications. You can search by location and submit applications and pay fees there. There’s usually an application fee and then you pay the booth fee if you get in. Thats interesting they’re free in France! Hopefully that makes them more accessible to people. I have found the more expensive shows tend to have an audience that is more excited about buying original art.

    When we are young we can become very fixated on one thing, to the exclusion of everything else. It's very "all or nothing", and it can feel devastating when that doesn't work out. I'm glad that you didn't stop painting, because that is your passion, and although that gallery rejected your application it was just one person's opinion. Art is such a diverse field, and so are the people who love it and want to buy it, so don't stop now. This is one of the positives to come out of the internet, that people can showcase what they do best. It has levelled the playing field somewhat from before, when approval was dependent on pleasing a small subset of critics, not just in art but many other fields too. I see that you have just started to your channel so I have subscribed, and look forward to seeing further videos. Likewise, things may be slow at first, so don't give up!

      Unless you change it in the free utilities software, it's a top-loading printer. Only stout card, board or the optical disc caddy, all of which need a straight path, should be loaded into the front.
