It’s interesting that I am to listening to this conversation about the TikTok ban a year later, especially now that there’s an actual effective date. Ironically, everyone’s flocking to another app with a Chinese logo, owned by a Chinese company. It’s a big joke on lawmakers who underestimated human psychology. Mike was spot-on in saying that lawmakers focused too much on highlighting the negative aspects, which, unfortunately, isn’t enough to deter people from the app. Like you all said, they missed a crucial opportunity to push for partial ownership of an app used by over 140 million Americans. What’s even more interesting now is how this situation highlights the broader conversation about data privacy, global tech regulation and content moderation (the thin line between silencing opinions/facts and protecting folks using the app). As TikTok continues to adapt (with ByteDance reportedly considering selling to Elon Musk), it raises questions about how much influence governments can realistically exert over global platforms. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how the landscape has evolved since your last discussion. Maybe it’s time for a follow-up episode? PS: Congratulations Mike and Mamuna on your homes! (I am guessing you both have closed by now) 🎊🎉

I’m honestly learning the art of storytelling for this exact reason. As a proud Nigerian, I’ve always been eager to share ALL the accolades, because why not, right? But the challenge comes when you’re a polymath, someone who’s great at many very different things. It can sometimes feel like you’re “too much” or “all over the place.” Before transitioning into corporate, I was an entrepreneur, which meant wearing many hats and proudly talking about it. It felt natural to share everything I was doing because each role mattered so much to my journey. But now, I’m realizing that while being multitalented is a strength, it’s equally important to focus and tailor your story to the context. Lately, I’ve been working on compartmentalizing my experiences and sharing the right stories for the right moments. Whether it’s in conversations, interviews, or online, it’s all about being intentional and connecting with people in a way that resonates with where they are. Thanks for your invaluable insights as always!

Hi Mamuna and Lola, I recently discovered your podcast while researching Mamuna’s inspiring career trajectory, and I knew I had to reach out. I’m a Nigerian-Canadian mom of a toddler and a baby, working in product management and navigating a pivotal stage in my career. Like Mamuna, I just got back from maternity leave not too long ago. I’m currently exploring industries that I’m truly passionate about and making strategic decisions to grow as a PM. Hearing “the why” behind this podcast truly resonated with me; it’s exactly what I need right now. When Mamuna mentioned the 800 messages in her LinkedIn inbox, I had to laugh (and wince a little!) because I was about to send one myself. But here I am, shooting my shot! I’m really hoping to get your attention, Mamuna, for a potential coffee chat to learn from your journey and insights. Lola, this podcast also introduced me to you and your phenomenal work, and I feel so fortunate to have found it. Blockchain and Web3 are such exciting, futuristic spaces, and your expertise is truly inspiring. I’ll be sending LinkedIn connection requests to you both and would be honored if you accepted. Thank you for creating something so meaningful. This Black Mom, "Lost in Tech,” is deeply grateful for your insights and the representation you bring to the table. Quick note: Reposting my comment because, for some reason, my comment got deleted by UA-cam; it's likely because of the external link I posted.

That gender pay bot is much needed in North America. It would definitely spark some laughs (and probably debates)! This reminds me of when the US government mandated companies to include pay ranges in job postings. Initially, there was a lot of pushback, but now we’re seeing super-wide ranges that leave you mentally trying to find where you might land on the spectrum. 😅 As someone currently in the job market, I tend to ignore those posted ranges, instead basing my ask on the market rate, always aiming close to the top, because why not? 😅 As for my proudest career moment, I can completely relate to Lola’s story. Back in 2015, I founded an e-commerce brand in Nigeria that quickly gained traction across the African market. When I moved to the US two years later, I faced a steep learning curve due to the vastly different market terrain. Business growth initially dipped, but I invested heavily (both time and a lot of money 😅) in marketing knowledge. That investment paid off as I was able to recover and successfully scale the business across the US and Canada. I exited the company in December 2019 when it was acquired by a US-based company, and let’s just say the acquisition figure in my account looked very good! Transitioning back into the workforce after the acquisition was another milestone I’m proud of. I joined a PM agency as a Product Specialist, where my entrepreneurial background gave me an edge. I could empathize with clients, having been in their shoes. My hands-on experience in product development and management (I built and continually upgraded my e-commerce platform as a business owner) was invaluable, and my marketing expertise rounded out my skill set. My first employer, post-exit, was thrilled to leverage my experience for various client projects, and I learned so much in that role. Starting, scaling, and eventually exiting my business remains one of my proudest achievements. It was a journey that not only challenged me but also equipped me with the skills I now use in my career. Thank you so much for this episode. I’m officially binge-watching now! lol

This episode is incredibly insightful! Having worked in an agency-style product development company, I completely understand Anon's question about managing misalignment. It’s particularly challenging when clients themselves aren’t clear on what they truly need, which can make the PM’s role even more complex. As a PM, you often find yourself balancing multiple moving parts: aligning a development team that’s focused on feasibility, managing clients who may not have a clear vision but expect quick results, and ensuring no one cuts corners that could compromise long-term outcomes. The task becomes one of continuous communication, expectation management, and sometimes even educating stakeholders on the importance of strategic thinking versus reactive decision-making. I love that this episode touches on almost every moving part. Thank you for such a valuable discussion!

I thoroughly enjoyed the inaugural episode of the Lost in Tech podcast! Thank you both for showing up and sharing your perspectives; the discussion was insightful, thought-provoking, and extremely relevant to what’s going on in today's tech landscape. The conversation around the culture of layoffs struck a chord with me. It's a critical issue that deserves much greater scrutiny. Too often, we see high-flying companies treating their people as expendable, showing an alarming disregard for the profound impact their decisions have on the lives of individuals and the fabric of communities. This unfortunate phenomenon underscores the loss of accountability that seems to have seeped into contemporary business practices. Your conversation is a crucial reminder that technology companies, like all businesses, must prioritize human dignity and sustainable growth above short-term profits. The tech world could use more spaces for such reflective and candid dialogues. Looking forward to seeing this podcast continue to be a fantastic resource for those of us immersed in tech and those just curious about the field. Keep up the great work, ladies, I can't wait for the next episode!
