I Finally Transcribed the Most Beautiful Jazz Piano Arrangement I’ve Ever Heard!
I've been obsessed with Matt Herskowitz's gorgeous arrangement/improvisation based on Schumann’s Träumerei ever since I heard it a few years ago, and finally got around to transcribing and recording my own performance of it.
I'm experimenting with new visual styles as you can see here, working with a 3d augmented reality music visualiser, a 3d grand piano realised in Blender, and then fed through Stable Diffusion video-to-video. I'd be interested in your thoughts- does this work well or is it a pointless 'gimmick'? 😂 You can see the original video in the bottom left corner...
I very much encourage everybody to check out Matt's original performance here: ua-cam.com/video/hT4Wsmt93xM/v-deo.html
He's one of my favourite pianists- in classical and jazz!
I interviewed him for my podcast here which is worth a listen if you enjoyed this piece! heartofthepiano.com/e25-interview-with-matt-herskowitz-phenomenal-classical-and-jazz-virtuoso-pianist-with-deep-soul/

    This was really interesting and the idees for more interviews are endless. Maybe Tchakovskys he had a hard life and had to hide his sexual orientation. Or Schostakovich who struggled to make music he loved in a country that demands something quite different. Bach who was deeply religious and I guess had a lot of his belief expressed in his music. Or Debussy, I heard the rumor that he wasn´t very pleasant but his music is magically, dreamlike and pleasant. And what about Vivaldi he lived in a time with values hard for us to relate to.

    I almost failed the “informing your audience” written component for the new FRSM, passing by one mark, despite using musical terminology, citations to academic sources and making well researched and complex arguments backed up with evidence because according to the examiner it was “somewhat lacking in academic rigour and depth”. So no, I don’t think the written component is easier compared to the old exam. Also the examiners, like with the new digital performance grades, are marking the performances much more harshly to compensate for the omissions of the other components and that candidates will likely do multiple takes and select the best one. The rest I DO agree with you, especially the allowing half of the rep performed to be from the level below is shocking. I made sure to do all my FRSM rep at the level of the old syllabus and current Trinity and LCM fellowship rep.

    Would you recommend Liszt's Consolation n2 instead? I'm having a hard time choosing a romantic piece for my Grade 8 exam. I think Rachmaninoff's is the one that I connect with the most. I don't particularly like the Liszt and the Chopin in this case. I might just swap it for something else from the ARSM list, there's plenty that I like in there.

    • @HeartofthePiano
      @HeartofthePiano Місяць тому

      Why do you want to play the Liszt instead of the Rachmaninov? They're both lovely pieces, the Rachmaninov is relatively straightforward & the Liszt is a bit more challenging IMO.

    Awesome Bob! Lots to dig into 😁. A note on bar 9 - I have the Schrimer performance edition of consolations and it uses the fingerings 1-23-5,5-1-45. And on the next bar 1-23-5,5-23-1. That seems alright, but I'm I'll need to check for jabbing. The fingering in bars 3-4 in this edition seems odd to me, specifically the awkward 4 to 3 at the start and the 5 to 4 in between the bars: 124-3-4-5,4-3. But anyway, one of your best videos. I'll be diving (back) into those other videos you mentioned.

    Loved the video, especially the examples of grade 8 pieces. My teacher always sings, and recommends her students do as well, however the explanations you give sent the message home. I can now clearly see why singing will help bring out the melody! I’ve been one of those students who pounded out both hands. Well if you didn't know, every instrument originated from human voice, the first instrument was the singing it self, for example Liszt always taught for his pupils, when they can sing it, imagine it, that is when they will be able to create the best interpretation.

    An alternative take - given the sort of places ragtime was initially played (bars etc.) the pianist would probably need a lot of volume, and hence would use the sustain pedal a lot. Joplin's piano rolls are considerably different still, and I don't know how AB would grade a piece played in that fashion. Good video though!

    • @HeartofthePiano
      @HeartofthePiano Місяць тому

      @@ursusmaritimus7159 hmm, I'm not sure just using a sustain pedal would add that much volume for this music- and I would imagine most upright (out of tune!) pianos could kick out quite a lot of sound in a bar- especially with all those octave left hands! But yes, there's a lot of controversy over how authentic piano rolls sound- and I'm pretty sure Joplin's piano rolls didn't capture pedal although others did (in a crude way). Also, I don't think he was supposed to be a fantastic player himself? But yes I could (and perhaps should have?) have talked more about Joplin's own playing, plus things like use of swing rhythms that get debated ad nauseam... 😄 but I decided to focus more on the conventional way of playing for the exam 😎

    It’s so refreshing seeing professional pianists show their progress from day 1, groaning, doubting themselves going “why am I learning this?” like the rest of us do at the start… when it’s so easy to see the end product and think that that person never struggled to get to that stage. Awesome performance of one of my favourite Rachmaninoff pieces, it's interesting how you say in the description that adrenaline and a high heart rate from a live concert enhances your performance, whilst many people would say that stage nerves overwhelm them, make it harder to focus effectively, cause shaky fingers etc. then i remember in your ABRSM new diploma video that you said you had ADHD. Apparently doing better under high pressure adrenaline situations is extremely common in ADHDers!
