Emerald Skulls Preview - It's OKAY To Pick Your Nose! on Rolling with the Beard
In the grimy depths of Kulbak Prison, where the greatest Dragul warriors are confined, inmates gather around Nargash the goblin and his bone-carved dice. Best to keep your wits about you. A game of Emerald Skulls is about to begin…
Emerald Skulls is a push-your-luck, dice gambling game. Attempt to fill the skull board with dice and place speedy, real-time wagers on the outcomes of your opponents’ rolls.
On your turn as the tumbler, roll dice and use tricks to place them on the five ascending tiers of the skull. But be warned - once you place dice, you can no longer put them on lower tiers for the rest of your turn!
During your opponents’ turns as tumbler, you are a gambler. Swiftly place bets and counter-bets on the results of the tumbler’s rolls. You may wager twice per round, but can only bet while the dice are in the tumbler’s hands. So think fast and bet smart - the quicker your wager, the bigger your payout!
When the pot of gears runs out, the player with the most claims the victory.

This game is a blast!
Yeah it is!
I was surprised that I enjoyed this game…but it was fun🥳
Its even better at 5 and 6 players!
But can you pick your friends nose?
Idk, come over and find out big boy! 😆 👉👃
More plastic for the world!🌎
But plastic that will never make it into a landfill! ....possibly my grave....lol
Color pattern used on your civic building? Or you simply used a Citadel contrast color or a speed color from the Army Painter?
Citadel base colors. Then citadel washes. (Thats what I already had). I haven't tried the army painter speed color. Is it any good?
I ordered this game in august 2022, and I just got it. It's the second printing including this expansion.
Nice! Solid expansion!
Nice painted houses, who's done it, and is there any explanation to how?
Thank you for the comment. I just primed the buildings with a primer color close to the plastic color. Then painted the details with Citadel paints. Then used Citadel washes (earthshade for most of it). Then matte clear coat to protect them.
I was on the fence with this game. It seemed like a cross between 1901 and Chinatown but i bit the bullet and bought it. After playing it, i see that wasn't too far off, but i absolutely love the game. If the scoring was a little more straight forward it would be a 10 but it takes some time to figure out scores in between eras. Also i thought it would be cool to paint the trees and water. After i did that, i started adding little details here and there. Finally i was pretty much committed and painted all the roofs and monuments. It's gorgeous. Also, the monuments are pretty much essential. I want a small card expansion with lots of crazy monument effects though. 9.5/10
Thank you for the comment! What color(s) did you paint the roofs? I've seen them painted the player colors but also the red terracotta.
@@rollingwiththebeard I did red clay roofs for the monuments and player colors for the players buildings. I liked the idea of simulating the real city but the player colors are visually distinct and pleasing and ultimately, I wanted to make the game easier to play. I think using red clay on every roof would make everything blend together and make differentiating pieces more difficult. I'm happy with my decision but I would understand someone going the other way. But at the end of the day it's a game and I want to play it more so I opted to make the game easier to play.
@@grog3514 that was my first thought. Making it easier to play by using the player colors however, does it really help playing? Most cases scoring dosnt matter who owns the building, just the building type. If you need to know say your income, that info is on your player board. I wish you could post a picture of your buildings!
@@rollingwiththebeard it does help actually. Whenever you score civic buildings it's really easy to tell which buildings you've already counted and run through scoring by player color. It's really noticeable in final scoring. If you post your Gmail here I'll send you some pictures.
@@grog3514 I would love to see them! Rollingwiththebeard@gmail.com
With cards being so pliable, I wonder how the paint would hold up through repeated shuffling. I'd also be interested to see how it affects (someone else's) tiles and boards.
Maybe I'll do a follow up video! I'll coat ALL the cards from a game and shuffle my brains out!
Wow love this. For science! 🤩
All in the name of Science! lol
I'm with you: yes it's overproduced and that's why it looks AMAZING on the table! Also it is a well organized game that can be played with newbies and seasoned players with different levels of difficulties or tactics. Great game and very happy to have it in my collection (with the Roads of Fortune just arrived in my hands from the KS) ❤
Thank you for the comment! Yes, its soooo good. And like you said, it can and I have taught it successfully to players new to the hobby!
I agree with Allan!
You stay out of this, you harlot!

I'm not crazy! You are loco!
Great review! First video of yours that i saw. I subbed. Hope to see more in the future!
Thank you for your kind words and the sub! I really appreciate it!
Glad to see another fan! It's in the background of our studio, and has been there since we got it. We call her Baby. She even has her own carrying case now, and the mat that is sooooo choice. Been painting them up I see!
Love it!
Hey! How does one send a game to you for review? Would love to send you Change My Mind - A Party Game For Loud People! Thanks!
Nice Review! AW (myself included) put a lot of work into it, glad it's your favorite game right now! The buildings are not perfectly aligned on the tile because if you look at photos of rome, it's not a perfect grid! digitalmapsoftheancientworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/c224ff00d19064207d765997d50aa4c6.jpg
As a fan of Spots, great vid! Just recently played a 4 player game (including my niece, age 7, who took to the game well) when I was camping. Got kinda bogged down and overstayed its welcome. I thought maybe it's best at 2 or 3 players. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for watching and the kind words! Not often but I have also had a few games drag on. Largely due to unlucky rolls of the dice but I still really enjoy the game.
How much cards are in the deck? How many of each?
Thank you for watching and the comment! The rulebook says 60 Talisman cards and 23 master magician cards. I think they are mostly equal amounts of each but I need to check when I get a chance.

Correct! You have won a free mylar bag!
First time here. Nice summary imho. Agree that PR is a lot of fun. Very impressed with the beard. Best wishes from New Zealand.
Thank you for the kind words! PR is such a fast, fun, delightful game.
I really like the game. It’s a race and efficiency puzzle that gets better with repeated plays. My advice to new players is don’t tuck cards too soon. You want to have a nice selection of cards to work with and once you get enough for a Star, then start tucking the cards and race towards the end.
Thank you for the comment! Excellent advice. Also, make sure you get plenty of cards. I've made that mistake my first couple plays.

It is. Let's play it!
Looks like tons of fun, kinda reminds me of Roll for It from Caliope Games. Great video!
It is alot of fun! Thanks for watching and commenting. Its a bit "heavier" than Roll for It. Personally I'm keeping both in my collection. Have you tired Art of War? Similar game but with a cool Samurai theme.

Lol awesome! I've recently added Berried Treasure to my "quick, cute, car games". It's nice to have them with you. Any other games in the trunk!?
@@rollingwiththebeard i did keep Just One in there until the box kept getting dinked and also Meadow because I was on the look out for someone to play it with me!! But I have taken it back in to shelter it. Maybe I should get a sturdy case for them instead of a random cloth bag lol
@@rosieheller8989 lol I dont even have mine in a bag. They are just rolling around back there "raw dog". Maybe I'll invest in a bag for starters. 😃
@@rollingwiththebeard well yeah I must admit Sushi Go is slushing about on the back seat without a bag or an elastic band or anything 😆
@@rosieheller8989 Is "danger" your middle name!? Lol. I typically hate metal tins but I guess for a "car game" it works out. If you enjoy Just One....check out Fun Facts. I believe it is the same publisher. It plays 8 and is a great party game.
If I do like Scythe, what are the chances I will like this game?
Lol well....good chance you will like it because its an awesome game...nothing to do with Scythe.
My regular game group (non-family) ranks Scythe near the top (for some, it’s their favorite, though it is far from being mine-I think it’s good). We’ve played Scythe many many times as well as the entire campaign. So when one of my buddies picked this up for his birthday last October, expectations by some were very high. After three plays, he sold it. No one in the group thought it was bad, but no one really wanted to keep playing, especially the owner. For me personally, I didn’t think the mechanics matched the theme at all. There’s supposed to be this ‘dark threat’, but no one ever felt threatened. You spend resources to get rid of corruption. And the exploration is really not particularly exciting either. No one ever felt immersed in this world. I think we were expecting a tense game and the tension factor was a 2 out of 10….making, in my opinion, the theme seem completely misleading. In Scythe, there’s this feeling of engine building during a Cold War tension-while I have other qualms about Scythe, at least the mechanics match the theme. One player did say he liked this a little better than Scythe after the first game, but later retracted his statement. I stop short of saying this game has nothing to do with Scythe. Aside from artwork, there’s mechs l, movement, and somewhat limited action selection. But don’t expect a true sequel. If this is a sequel, it feels like the second movie of a trilogy, setting up the third for a big Kapow! But we found this one largely forgettable. For me, Scythe blows *this* out of the water. I give Expeditions 5.5/10. Whereas Scythe and Tapestry both get an 8/10 from me.
@@mrp4242 Thank you for the comment! Hey, Let's not drag Tapestry into this! LOL Tapestry and Viticulture are in a league of their own! 2 of the best games IMHO. I really enjoy the engine building with the cards in Expeditions and how it can be different each time you play it. Yes, the "exploration" grows stale quickly but I wasn't expecting too much exploration. I could definitely see how someone could be bummed if they were wanting a theme rich exploration game. I wanted a pretty, nicely produced, card drafting engine builder and I feel thats what I got so I'm very happy with Expeditions. It has been awhile since I've played Scythe....I think you may have encouraged me to get a copy to the table again!
If I don't like Scythe, what are the chances I will like this game?
I would say pretty good! It plays and feels completely different. Thank you for the comment 😊
Nice review! So, after a few plays, where would it stand versus Isle of Cats? Would you say it's better? Would you say it worths having both? Note: I do own and love Isle of Cats :) Thanks!
Thank you! Thanks for watching and the comment. That is a tough question. While I enjoy (and own) Isle of Cats, I think I prefer World Wonders. I think there is room for both in a collection. The card drafting and bidding is great in Isle of Cats but the streamlined game play in World Wonders makes it easy to get to the table. Not that Isle of Cats is difficult, World Wonders is just that smooth. After all this Isle of Cats talk now I want to play it 😜.
@@rollingwiththebeard hehe, thanks for the answer. I'm still unsure about World Wonders, but your additional comment might be the thing which will make me jump in. But don't hesitate, go save some cats!
@@cho7kipu lol I just might go save some cats! (Actually, I want to play some more Barcelona! Its amazing! ) If your on the fence about World Wonders, talk a friend into buying it! Lol

Does the courier let you swap people from the safe haven?
I don't believe so but its been awhile since I've played so I'll need to check the rules on that one. Have you played the original?
@@rollingwiththebeard no but I bought the big box because you had such high praise for it. I'm going to teach it for the first time tonight and the rules say to use 8 cards and add the courier and caravan but I know people will ask if they can swap cubes into the safe haven but I don't see it addressed in the rules.
@@grog3514 I'm 93.7 % sure once a meeple makes it into the safe haven there is no way to move them. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! How players do you have?
@@rollingwiththebeard 5 players. It said to remove 8 rat tokens so I removed ones that had 6+ cube requirements. It's that a good idea or should it just be random? Not sure how quickly the spots will fill up. I read some people feel like the game can be uneventful if the plague isn't killing enough citizens.
@@grog3514 I think we removed them randomly. I would suggest playing with the Academicum expansion. It dosnt add many more rules but adds the event cards and Universities giving players "objectives" on the board to "fight over".
Thanks for the video!
