One of the ugliest landlocked ships ever-

The USS Recruit! That’s were I made my calls back home to my parents when we got permission to call home. Graduated August 1991 - Company 186

We didn't get too much time to train on the Recruit in 1968. We were very busy learning so much. Boot was supposed to be 13 weeks but we went through in 8. They needed us in the fleet. This was at the height of the Vietnam war. 2 months and 2 weeks after arriving at NTC San Diego I arrived aboard USS Ranger (CVA-61) off the coast of Vietnam. I got to fly out to the ship and make a trap. Pretty good for a brand new E-2 fresh out of boot.

When my father went to NTC San Diego for training in the 50's, the RECRUIT was a fire drill platform and they would set it afire. When I trained at NTC San Diego (88) the RECRUIT was a giant phone bank, where we could call home on occasion during training. We would enter through those doors on the side of the RECRUIT and there would be hundreds of phones , then once done there were bleachers just outside the doors outside where we would wait for our shipmates to finish their calls or until the D-I instructed us it was time to move out.
