Squirrel and Silver Streamer - One Fly A Day
Great fly. I was always a bit unsure what a flymph really was. Thanks. :-)
Hi, Terrybiggenden. Thanks for your feedback. I think that flymph is an old and almost forgotten way of tying a fly. I have a special fly box only with flymph. I have to say not so often used. There's only one day left before Santa is coming. May I wish you and your family a Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year!
@@kingsmeadowflyrod-atasteof4139 Thanks and a Merry Chrstmas and Happy New year for you too. :-)
I enjoy your tying videos. You have some very interesting and different approaches to tying . I am from Maine in the USA.
Hi williamemmons8816. How are you? Thanks for your feedback. I hope my way of flying inspires you. How is the fishing in Maine at the moment? In Stockholm (Sweden), where I live, it will snow within a couple of days. The fishing waters I usually visit for dry fly fishing or nymph fishing have been closed for season for 1-2 months. So my time is spent preparing for next year's fly fishing. I'm not sure if Maine is also preparing for a cold winter or if it's heading towards different weather. Do you want to tell me?
@ We are in winter in Maine. There are some places you can fish, but with the below freezing temperatures the lines and guides on the fly rod freeze quickly. You have given me some great alternatives to some of my regular approach to tying. Hopefully I can Finnish my kitchen project soon and get back to some fly tying.
@@williamemmons8816 It sounds very much like Sweden. Fly tying will be my spare time to the ice will give up. May I wish you and your family a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!
Preciosa y muy fácil de montar. Enhorabuena!!!!
Hi, jorgeluisfernandezpenabad2068. Thanks for your feedback. Planning for next season or still in the middle of a fishing season?
@ Hi, planning the next season and tying trout flies with “gallo de León”
@@jorgeluisfernandezpenabad2068 Sound wonderful for planning the next season and tying trout flies. But I'm unsure if I know what “gallo de León” is. Could it be like coq de leon feathers or is it a special fly pattern?
@ ir is coq de León feathers in spanish language. I also the some salmon flies; but I prefer fishing with wet flies, trout and “reo” (sea trout)
Preciosa!!! y con un montaje muy sencillo
Hi, jorgeluisfernandezpenabad2068. Thanks for your feedback. Sorry for answering you in English. I don't speak Spanish, but I am very grateful that you watch my videos
Nice bug thank you
Hi, chili1593. Thanks for your feedback. Parachute fly patterns are really nice. As fly pattern and as tying.
Fantastic fly. I always prefer simplt patterns that are abstract but still have a natural feel. Love this one. Hare's ear patterns are always fun to tie and fish. :-)
Hi Terrybiggenden. You are completely right. And a hare's ear is the most flexible fly-tying material I know. You can use it as vings, body, and tail beside legs and other details. The Perfect Fly-Tying Materials.
Thanks Jan - a very cool tie!
Hi, Ecofish. Thanks for your feedback. Do you like fishing streamers? What kind of fish do you most often catch?
@ I love fishing for smallies; I will fish trout as well. Actually, anything that bites works for me. I love tying lead free jigs and I’ve put together a few streamers when inspired.
@@Ecofish1 Hi, Ecofish1. Sounds very interesting with lead-free jigs. Done it for a long time? I like to fish with light equipment. Flyfishing in wt 3-4 with dry flies, wet flies, or nymphs is what I prefer. Mostly early in the morning or late in the evening. In Stockholm (Sweden) where I live, it's soon X-mas. May I wish you a Merry Christmas to you and your family?
Nice one thanks
Hi, chili1593. Thanks for your feedback!
Nice thanks
Hi, chili1593. Thanks for your nice words and that you watch my videos. Have a nice day!
I have to ask. Is a Flymph a floating nymph ?
Hi davidveilleux4688. Yes, what is a flymph? The most common explanation is "a wingless wet fly". However, that's not fully correct. The term Flymph is credited to Pete Hidy. Co-author of the book "The Art of Tying the Wet Fly and Fishing the Flymph". Pete Hidy defined the Flymph as an insect that is not yet a fly, but no longer a nymph. Flymphs are often tied with soft hackle and sparse materials, which give them a natural movement in the water and make them effective for attracting fish, especially trout and grayling.
Thanks for responding. Now I know. Appreciate your explanation
@@davidveilleux4688 You are welcome! Just give me a note if you have any questions. I don't know everything, but I will try to answer you. It's a couple of days left to Xmas in Sweden. May I wish you a Merry Xmas already!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Hi, chili1593. Thanks for your feedback. Have a nice day
hello you make it look easy. Amazing!
I enjoy watching fly tying videos.🙂
Hi, georgemelton1606. Thank you for your feedback. There are quite a few online showing how to tie bow ties. And like you, I get lots of inspiration from them. A wonderful resource for learning new fly-tying techniques. It is a great source of knowledge, inspiration, and ideas for new flies. I'm a great admirer of The Old Masters who didn't even have the vise and tools that we modern fly tyers have as standard and take for granted.
Simple and effective. Nicely done! Greetings from Fargo North Dakota USA
Hi Ghosthawk332nd. Thank you for your feedback. What's the fishing like in North Dakota? I believe North Dakota is quite similar to Sweden. This means that we are close to winter time and soon it will be time to review the fishing equipment for the next season. On the other hand, with each passing day, we get one day closer to the next fishing season. 👍
@@kingsmeadowflyrod-atasteof4139 To be honest, at 72 years young I do not fish as much as I should like. The Red River of the north flows from here to Winnipeg CanaBda. It is a world class channel catfish and carp fishery. I won't say I have landed, but I have hooked and fought over 30 lb specimens of both. Of the 2 the carp are the harder both to hook and to land. They know every stick, stone, and bit of broken concrete in the river. And they use it all to their advantage. EitSher will put a really good bend in your rod which is what I am really looking for. Not many trout within a couple hundred miles of here. I do almost all of my tying on Mustad 3366 size 6 hooks. Small enough to hook a good sized panfish or bluegill. Big enough to interest almost any fish that see's it.
Beautiful thanks
Hi, chili1593. Thanks for your feedback. I hope my videos shape inspiration in your fly-tying.
@ very much so thank you
Nice tie, thanks for video.
Hi, vincentcoppola9832. Thanks for your feedback. Have a nice season anywhere you fish.
Interesting pattern. Nicely tied
Lovely tie Jan. I remember fishing a a Dabbler very similar to this on some loughs in Ireland during May many years ago. Many Brownies came to the net. 😊
Hi, rightmarker1. Thank you for your feedback. It is the same in Sweden, but it is unusual to fish with this type of fly. Flies with mallards are relatively uncommon in Sweden. It has become more CDC. I am very fond of both tying and fishing with the older fly patterns. A mayfly to me is a fly with fan wings. What do you think?
@@kingsmeadowflyrod-atasteof4139 Fan wings - yes. Up wing dry flies like the Adams both parachute and old school have always produced for me. In fact a parachute Adams is my go to dry when either there’s no visible hatch or I can’t identify the hatch. Tight lines Jan.
Beautiful fly well tied. I appreciate your skills. I live in the Southeastern US where there aren’t trout or other cold water species. I use your (and others) patterns as inspiration. Mostly, I try to learn the skills shown. Thanks for teaching me.
Hi cowdoc123. Thank you for your feedback and kind words. What fishes do you have if not cold water species? Have you caught them on fly fishing? The most interesting thing about fly fishing is that almost any type of fish can be caught on flies. In Sweden, we have perch, pike, and a few other fish species that are usually fished with fishing lures. However, I fish them on flyfishing, giving me lots of exciting moments.
@ Mostly largemouth bass and bluegill. Occasionally crappie. Perch as you know them and pike are more cold water than what lives in the Deep South of the USA. I fish almost exclusively with flies. The thrill of catching a fish on something I tied makes my day. Thank you for giving me inspiration.
@@cowdoc123 Hi cowdoc123. As you do, I just go for fly fishing. I don't even own a spinning rod or a suitable spinning reel, line, or bait. But I have a couple of fly rods, as my wife says, too many. It is as many other fly fishermen usually say; "...my wife doesn't understand me..."

Love your work. May I make a polite request? Could you zoom a little closer into the vise - then we can see the detail of your technique? Greetings from Canada. 😊.
Hi, rightcursor1. Thank you for your feedback and kind words. I'll try to take better close-ups. I'm also interested in staying sharp. But I'll try. Thanks for your input. Where in Canada do you live? The rest of the world knows that Canada has plenty of exciting fishing waters. Do you have any near where you live?
@@kingsmeadowflyrod-atasteof4139 Thank you for your reply Sir. I live in western Alberta so I’m close enough to the eastern slopes of the Rockies to have the privilege of fishing for Trout - Brownies, Rainbows, Brookies, and the wonderful Cutthroat. Similar to Sweden I guess 😊.
@@rightmarker1 Nice to hear from you rightmarker1. It sounds like Sweden. However, we don't have killer whales; rainbows are cultivated and not on the "naturally occurring" list. Rainbows are mostly found in so-called put-and-take waters or reservoir fishing. In some cases slightly more expensive fishing licenses. Often also heavier and larger fish. I caught my biggest rainbow on Golden Ribbed Hare's Ear weight 8,6 kg.
Love simple spider patterns
Hi, avidveilleux4688. Thanks for your feedback. I Love simple spider patterns too. All kinds of simple fly patterns are interesting. In the past, most of the patterns from Old Masters were quite easy and simple patterns. And I like that. My favorite is March Brown in both wet fly and dry fly.
Great fly! A bit hard to follow… English subtitles? I’m interested in hearing what you are saying.
Hi 50Squirrel. Thank you for your feedback. Well, I don't feel comfortable speaking English. Not yet anyway. But I'm working on it. So in the future, I should also be able to get by in English. However, "One Fly A Day" is only intended to inspire the viewer to start and continue fly tying or to develop fly tying. There is no voice in short reels. But my goal is to make those longer videos with English voice soon. ...if I dare, that is...
Hmmm…. I’ve never put a tail on a caddis but I think it’s a very nice wet fly. In my humble opinion.
Hi, 50Squirrel Thanks for your feedback and opinion. I very much agree with you. However, some dragonfly larvae (nymphs) have tail sprouts. These are mainly common in insects of the order dragonflies (Odonata) and dragonflies (Ephemeroptera). The tail freckles are long, thread-like structures at the end of the rear body. Mayfly larvae often have three long tail buds, although some species have two. Dragonfly larvae have shorter tail buds, and they are not as prominent as in mayflies but are present in some species. These tail sprouts help the larvae sense their surroundings and move in the water. And besides that, some of those underwater insects or insects that are "on their way to the surfaces" change the way the body is in the meantime. My favorite fly-tyer Oliver Edwards (www.wildtrout.org/news/oliver-edwards) knew all about such details.
Simple but elegant
Hi, 50Squirrel. Thanks for your feedback!

Was that a UV resin used on the head?
Hi, 50Squirrel. how are you? No, it is Zap-A-Gap medium ca+ www.fishingmegastore.com/fly-tying-glue/zap-zap-a-gap-super-glue~6303.html. I'm not positive for UV-Resin. Yet...
Another cool fly! You always tie in your tails with a feather tip rather than just the feather barbs stripped from the feather? Regardless another beautifully tyed fly!
Hi 50Squirrel. Mmmm, you have noticed my little special technique🤣. You are an observant friend. Thanks for that. From my point of view and of my experience, cutting off the tip of the feather and using the barbs on the left and right sides of the stem (not the stem) will give you more stiffness in the tail. I'm not saying I'm 100% right, but my fly-tying mentor back in the 1960s and 1970s taught me so. "The lines of the tiger never disappear..." as they used to say... It would be best if you did not use more barbs or less barbs. Use the same number of barbs as usual for the tail (6-10).
@@kingsmeadowflyrod-atasteof4139 Very informative!
Nice pattern thanks for sharing
Hi, davidveilleux4688. Thanks for your feedback. I'm happy that you enjoy watching my videos.
Simple but stunning!
Hi, 50Squirrel. Some of the simplest fly patterns with less material are also the very best fly patterns for their task. Mallard and Hare's ear spiders are probably a further development of the early "soft hackle" patterns that became popular with English fly fishermen in the 19th century. Several of these patterns are documented in fly fishing books from the mid to late 19th century. However, it will take some years and use before those fly patterns show up in a book.
Another great fly!
