The sixth Nikkei Angel Island Pilgrimage was held Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024. The event honors our immigrant pioneers and helped to rediscover the little-known history of the Japanese and Japanese American legacy at Angel Island, where up to 85,000 persons of Japanese descent - the second largest immigrant group - landed between 1910 to 1940, before setting foot in America. The pilgrimage included:...

Thanks for posting this clip! I’m somewhat new to the Bay Area and a new fan of Robert Handa. I recently attended the SVAPFF in which he moderated the post-screening discussion of the documentary Home Court. His insights, passion for the arts, and connections with the community amplified the audience’s appreciation of the screening.
Hi everyone.....Susie and I are watching from Concord.

I am not apart of the Japanese American community in Sacramento. I am apart of the more recent arrival of ethic Chinese from Vietnam, coming out of what is now Little Saigon in South Sacramento from the 70s/80s. But it would be cool if the location at William Land Park Zoo is turned into a plaza district with traditional Japanese and Chinese architecture like in Portland. In Portland, they have a Chinese and Japanese garden. Then it can be like a small village with shops. It will be a nod to the historical Japantown and Chinatown that once existed in Downtown. The early Asian immigrants faced alot of discrimination and racism, the 1960s redevelopment in Downtown Sacramento removed those communities. Of course it would be more fitting to have it DT since that was were it used to be and the Chinese American community for that era retained a Chinatown Mall. DT is land value is probably going to be far more valuable since there is a plan to extend DT. The things is, the major cities in the U.S. all have a Chinatown or Japantown. It almost goes hand in hand. I am only suggesting the William Land Park Zoo location because I think it's owned by Sacramento County and it close to Green Haven/ Florin Rd. since that is where many of the descendants from the historical Japantown and Chinatown moved too. It can be like a quasi government funded project with the descendants of former businesses or Asian geared businesses that rents out suites in the plaza. So that way it can be like a mix of grants and loans. Loans that would be repaid through the lease of the suites. The Little Saigon in San Jose has a vibrant business district that's made into a small village feel. I think it can serve as a tourist hub, educational hub, and some sort of restitution to amend the past harm. But it's not just a flat handout since it will generate revenue for the local community and serve as a hang out. There could be a Asian night market, host events, and a farmers market on weekends. I would imagine a few anchors like a dim sum restaurant. Ramen bars. Karaoke. Etc. Can be a place of education if they offer tea ceremony lessons like they do at Sacramento State College.
lol, no Japanese food? 😂
Hawaii to the US should be from Hawaii to the mainland.
