Liszt: Gondoliera s. 162 (Ian Lindsey)
Performed in Boston’s Glissando Series, October 2021
As its title may suggest, Gondoliera is a Venetian barcarolle in the usual 6/8 time. A brief introduction precedes the main body of the piece - a dream-like rendition of the popular gondolier song "La biondina in gondoletta" by Giovanni Battista Peruchini.
The piece is written in the form of through-composed variations, but this easily may go unnoticed because the serene character remains unchanged throughout, despite the ever increasing addition of delicate filigree. A small coda closes the piece with an interesting bell-like effect in the bass that recalls the sound of the“campanili” or bell towers that are often associated with Venice.

Liszt: Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H s. 529 (Ian Lindsey)
Переглядів 812 місяці тому
Fantasy and fugue on a theme of BACH: It is almost impossible to fathom how the music of J.S. Bach faded into obscurity so quickly and so completely after his death. It wasn’t until Baron Von Swieten (a Viennese aristocrat who was also one of Mozart’s patrons) introduced Beethoven and a select few to some of Bach’s music, that an interest began to slowly develop. However, it was during the 19th...

Années de Pèlerinage book 2 (supplement) “Venezia e Napoli”: Liszt wrote in total, 3 books (or collections of pieces) of Années de Pèlerinage. Translated as “years of travel”, each set represents distinctly different styles in his compositional development. The title was of course inspired by Liszt’s own travels, but also at least in part by Goethe’s Novels “Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship” an...

Annees de pèlerinage book 3 (Italy): The final book of Années is the least ostentatious of the three books - many of the pieces being darker and more introspective, and generally lacking in much of the virtuosity of his previous two cycles. Yet, in terms of sheer invention, it might be the most pr...
Liszt: Tarantella s. 162 (Ian Lindsey)

Performed in Boston’s glissando series,October 30, 2021 Tarantella In terms of both length and popularity, the sprawling tarantella is the standout star of the set. Resembling a form of three parts (fast-moderato-fast), it is actually composed utilizing only two themes (originally by Guillaume-Louis Cottrau, 1797-1847), similar in structure to that of the first Mephisto Waltz. Interrupting the ...

Second elegy: The second Elegy was dedicated to Lina Ramann and existed in a prior version, titled Entwurf der Ramann-Elegi, but was revised and published in 1877 with the simpler title of Zweite Elegie. In addition to the solo piano version, Liszt made an arrangement for piano and cello, which at one point also included harp and harmonium. The piece slowly unfolds - the fragmented first theme ...

Liszt apparently was fascinated with the subject of Faust, since he wrote no less than six works related to it, including his “Faust Symphony”, four mephisto waltzes, as well as other “mephisto-related pieces, including the Mephisto Polka, and the Baggatelle sans Tonalite and various arrangements of this work. One of two “Episodes from Lenau’s Faust”, the first Mephisto Waltz was written someti...

Liszt: La Lugubre Gondola 2 s. 200 (Ian Lindsey)
Переглядів 524 роки тому
Widely considered one of Liszt’s finest and most important late works, La Lugubre Gondola is also one of his most forward thinking. In the starkest of economy, the piece manages to push the limits of tonality, starting with the fact that it manages to obscure the home key of f minor for the entire length of its thirty-four bar introduction.

I am not sure which of the two 1838 versions you are referring to, but both are marked “andante, quasi allegretto”. If you want to hear a nice performance, you should listen to Nikolai Petrov.

Hold on, there might be some truth to that comment. Liszt's compositions were unique in the way that they are very easy to misinterpret. It is really at the mercy of the pianist. How many times have we came from a god awful Chopin recital and said ''what a poor pianist", but then came from a god awful Liszt recital and said ''what a poor composer''? Liszt composed with the insight of a composer, AND the skills of a pianist. He was always the best interpreter of his own music.

@DarkenedAffairs You were around to hear Liszt play? I am so envious. Franz Liszt (October 22, 1811 - July 31, 1886) was a 19th-century Hungarian composer, pianist, conductor, and teacher. Did I misunderstand what you were trying to say? My apologies if so.

@pianodudeler It's the most difficult of the set, I think. I've never heard that title for this piece before. I love those quaint and funny titles, though. Some of the 19th century programatic titles for the Chopin Preludes are also hilarious.

Thank you very much for your comment! I chose this tempo because though slower than I could have taken, the Andantino of the A section should be slightly faster than the opening introduction, marked Andante. The B section is marked "poco piu animato" and thus should be a little faster still. The following etude is marked Allegretto, and if the Andantino were too fast, then both tempi would appear the same. This is my opinion and artistic preference, not a fact. Feel free to disagree!
