What ACTUALLY Happened in Silent Hill || A Full Narrative Analysis

It's snow, not ash. There are no alternate dimensions. Alessa was a hero, not a villain.
We're going to break down the entirety of SH1 to find the questions worth asking.
My growing frustrations with the continued direction of the series is directly tethered to the misunderstandings of the foundations of the Silent Hill story and adherence to the film's version and the wild fan theories that, while fun, are not found within the actual games themselves.

    analyzing this game on its own, no retcons from future games, no external books, no ito tweets from 15 or 20 years later... this needs to be done more often for all game analyses. it's too often that i see a game's actual story get ignored for retconned versions... i love that you were able to recognize that there is no "fog world", like in the newer games, just reality & the nightmare, and the distinction between the otherworld & the nightmare; pinning alessa as the killer behind the mysterious deaths of the mayor and the detective, which was done through her psychic powers; addressing the boiler controversy & pointing out that flame probably isn't part of the ritual, but rather a defensive weapon used by alessa; recognizing the flauros as a prison... i'm glad that people are finally starting to rebuild the series lore from the beginning and toss the wiki away. this video, thegamingmuse's documentaries on the making of this game, and reinstallpaul's series analyzing the religious imagery in this game, yall are basically the only 3 people worth watching when it comes to video analysis of silent hill 1

    I think the interpretation they most prohect is that there is another dimention but not quite like the movies proved. Silent Hill is a natural weak point between the realm if reality and an exetentail realm. A sort of tulpa or thoughtform realm where our emotions and mental contructs form physically. The groups who worshiped this area and used it yo manifest gods or vengful beings (like the origins comic showed) were unwittingly tapping into this realm. They created their own explaintions on what it was and thus caused a sort of orobus cycle. The cult created this whole mythology and so the thought forms they brought through with their concentration took that form. The rituals helped it happen not because they were real but because the people believed they were and thus focused their intent more to allow it to happen. As this happened, the wall between realities thinned and with the birthing of the "God" it allowed Silent Hill to "call" and maifest to beings of particualarly strong emotions/subconsous thoughts. Its not sentient. It isnt plotting or reaching out but just a natural thing that exosts and does this more in repsonse to what is fed into it and its surroundings. Negative thoughts form more solidly in the subconsious where they are repressed so it naturlaly works stronger with them. More passages can be opened even outside of Silent Hill as shown in Homecomming and The Room. In the case of the latter, Walter was able to break through and create a thought form version of himself. Several actually. He was causing a merge between both relms and imprinting his created vision over relaity through use of the other realm. Imagine it like a workable medium being painted on over an existing image. Sadly, Silent Hills was looking to capitolize on this as well. It seemed to depict the isnide of the thoughtform realm as a nexus to many "Silent Hills." These wou be thin ppints between realities like Silent Hill or even multiple relaities like different versions of Silent Hill. As the space between spaces where though manifests, it could be the linking barrier between different timelines as well. Since that game was cancled, it isnt as useful for speculating but dies seem to support that already formed narrative. It is why the god looks different bqsed on the person who created it. It is why the town appears completely fiffernrt to thsoe being affected by its manifestions and normal to those not at the exact same time. Its a tubla realm spilling into our reality but only resonating with those most naturally atuned to its capabilties toward them. The more the gap is widened by thrse people "excersizing" its power, the more concentrated and widespread its effect can be. It isn't Hell nor is anything from it any more real before it manifested than anything else. In truth, anty and all mythologys or ecplainyions could be made "real" through it beacuse of its inherihant nature if a strong enough belief in it is conducted in the vacinity. I think the fact Alessa went into a cammatose state also supercharged it because she was already uneittingly the target of this throughtform manifestion attempt but then was in a state of deep subconsciousness for years on end that fed purely and directly into the gap and enabled it yo stretch and allow the entire town to be affected. Its also why everyone aees the same thing as opposed to in other games like silent hill 2. Being in a commatose state, Alesaa was "buolding everything throught he strongest possible projections and rhe town basiclaly became her dreamstate while in that coma. Since the targets in other games are convuous for most of the time, thier prokects are weaker and conatring with thsoe of the others the same is occuring on. This can be bypassed thought. When cahracters resonte the smar thoughts/emotions or one overtakes the other steong enough, both will see the same thing. This occurs in SHII when Angela is nearing the end of her story and James xan suddenly see the flaming inferno around them. She makes note that he can finanly see them yoo and that they have been aroudn for her since the begining. Since her own metal pressures have finally gotten storng enough to overwhelm her fatally, they are also superceding Jame's won in those momemts. The realm idea is also why Maria happened how she did. James was on his way to Silent hill qnd repressing his memories of what just happened. She came into existance as a result. She is a part of his subconsious created as the first part of his self torture out of the Tulpa realm. As he got bewrer and those feelings were supressed, they went onto that subconscious realm and formed the Hell he would experience as he arrived. SHII takes special inspiration from Jacobs Ladder and in that story a young female love intrrest is trying to distract Jacob from the demonic presence around him We learn the "demons" are just these beings that help a dying perosn move onto their nedt life by clearing the world of there current one internally in their head. To those accepting, they appear as angels. To thsoe refusing to give up their hold on what they had, they appear as destructive monsters. The young woamn was never on Jacobs real life but was a manifestion of his own subconsuous desire to stay alive, trying hard to prevent him from helping the creatures move him on though their acknowledgment. The whole world he was in in the movie was actually just his memories in his head, slowly being deconstructed as he recognized things were wrong more and more. SLII doesnt take place in James H ad but since the contents of his head spill inoy the other side and that can then cross over through Silent Hill, a sinialr effect is occuring.

    These games showed me that horror game plots don't have to be shallow narratives that only serve to justify gameplay. And video game stories in general no longer had any excuse for being sub par after this came out.

    Oh a Silent Hill analysis! don't mind if I do! I feel like most discourse about the fog world and the nightmare world is just splitting hairs. Reality was altered, and ultimately how permanent the effects of Alessa's powers were on it is completely discretional. Whether we call it a localized alternate reality, reality being out of phase or superimposed by the nightmare, it's really just semantics at the end. I really like how you presented Alessa's defiance towards her circumstances, always fighting back and not giving up. It just aligns so well with the characterization her "reborn self" is given on 3.

    • @themidnightsnow
      @themidnightsnow 2 дні тому

      I do think it matters based on how we perceive the “Otherworld.” If it’s derived from the mind, the story is about a person’s inner thoughts and emotions literally manifesting into reality and affecting others. If it’s just some alternate punitive dimension, things happen arbitrarily and is not directly tied to any one person. Interpreting it the second way is how we got stuck on guilty protagonists since there really isn’t any other way to approach it under that lens. But, yeah, there’s still a lot of Alessa in Heather. Rebel with a cause.

    • @alonsogonzalez7539
      @alonsogonzalez7539 2 дні тому

      @themidnightsnow in some ways I don't think they are entirely exclusionary. Whatever alteration of reality that manifested on SH due to Alessa still echoes, and that's what more people have gotten entwined with later. Because it was born of Alessa's own tortured mind, it resonates more on people with inner turmoil. The place itself has always been spooky as per additional (and later) sources, but it's is ultimately Alessa's torment what made SH what it became. If it is some sort of punitive alternate dimension (which personally I don't think it is) it was still manifested by Alessa's torment, and echoes even if she is free now.

    I finished Silent Hill 2 Remake 2024 . I absolutely loved the game and I am devouring lore videos after finishing it. SPOILER I didn't know Mary's body was in James car at the beginning the whole time! I got the "leave" ending after 30 hours of gameplay. I am craving more Silent Hill already but to my dismay there aren't any games ready to be binged. The only one I could find on PC is Slent Hill 4. I'm gonna have to get an emulator for the older ones. I expected there to be more Silent Hill playability for such a household name. Currently watching "the midnight snow"'s youtube series about Silent Hill. If bloober had any common sense they'd be remaking Silent Hill 1 and 3 right now instead of making their own stinkers.

    Sh1 the town was corrupted because of alessa as she is a witch and so bringing her darkness into reality because of her powers.the town itself never had that power to do these things on its own untill silent hill 2 where the town just acted on its own which was odd.makes me wonder if the the town is secretly being corrupted by a new witch that we have yet to seen to explain why the town still has mysticals phenomenons with other protagonist

    • @themidnightsnow
      @themidnightsnow 2 дні тому

      Alessa is not a witch (that’s what her bullies called her) but she did have powers and later began manifesting her nightmare. After she’s gone, we see other people manifesting their own nightmares onto themselves, like James and Angela. The “town” doesn’t do anything on its own. But something about the area makes a person’s inner mind come out.

      That’s why I think “lighting in a bottle” is the only way to describe it. You can’t even reliably figure out the intention of the developers, they all had different ideas and plans that mush-mashed into the final product. How they came out so well is at least attestable to the writing, but other than that it’s all just a series of happy coincidences and group effort that made something timelessly special.

    This is a fantastic video essay! I recently finished playing SH3 and I unfortunately didn't realize that the story was practically a direct continuation of SH1 (Went into the game a little /too/ blind lol) so I'm a little bummed that I missed out on a world of context. I'm less incentivized to go back to play SH1, but your analysis and attention to detail was great, it honestly pieced together a lot of questions I had about the lore of Silent Hill as a whole. Subscribed and very much looking forward to your future media analysis content :)

      That’s actually how I started the series too! Even after I played SH3, I thought it was inventing backstory not a direct sequel. When I played SH2 and SH4 later, it seemed clear that these stories weren’t related. Kinda funny that the “twist” of playing SH1 was that it was a prequel to SH3! But thank you. I am working on SH2 now but I’m most excited for SH3.
