Frank Lloyd Wright’s Wingspread: An inside and outside peak of this elegant and spectacular home
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1938-39 for the Herbert Fist Johnson Jr. family. It’s shaped like a four-winged pinwheel and spans approximately 14,000-square feet. It is located Racine, Wisconsin, and set in a 30-acre property with a wooden ravine and a series of ponds and lagoons. Unfortunately, my visit was in late November so the plush exterior greengage is not apparent, which includes the 80-year-old grapevines growing on its original cypress terrace.

Unprecedented for its time with the use of a single material reinforced concrete it is considered to be by many the first modern building in the world. Completed in 1908 and located in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. I thoroughly loved the tour.

The floor plan of this house is one of my favorites in architecture... Four wings with specific functions that spread on the site... Just beautiful !!! Great tour ! Thanks and... What's next ?
@@greatmustis I agree. The layout is great and I absolutely love the house! Not sure what is next. I may head to Phoenix in January for Taliesin West
Nice quality,what phone you using?
@@willgooday iPhone 15. But concert videos on ground floor are different due to heads bobbing in the way. I actually dislike what I did, but did the best I could considering a 6’4” noisy egghead in front of me. What do you use?
It sure would be nice to have some captions. A little too much mood and no facts. Thanks, otherwise.

Your many video/photostreams look at space the way Frank could do this in his mind before finishing drawings with each of your works revealing things rather hard to see on a tour when the overall can dazzle causing us to miss things. Your work is fresh. I can visualize how Frank would just move on to new things as he would see whole new works in little details that you seem to catch for us viewers. I often need to see your work many times in different ways over different aspects in my busy life to appreciate it in more depth. APPLAUSE!

Wisconsin was gifted with the creations of Frank Lloyd Wright.
@@501rivet definitely and how lucky
@@markdhecimovich2568 ...Wright seemed to place design as the main feature of his creations, then incorporated human use of space into the design. The breakfast nooks, the multi windowed walls providing an openness to the outdoors regardless of what was on the other side, creating a generous feeling of living space. Wrights pure "divine" design use of those spaces was, is, not for everyone, which can betray the unique streamlined layouts, if in the hands of a less "connected" tenant.
@@501rivet well said!

Великолепно.
His domiciles are so well done they provoke an emotional response at the mere sight. Falling Water chokes me up. Same here. Maybe they're not the most livable, but they're visually stunning always.
@@thudeets I agree! Thanks for viewing
I have very few things on my bucket list but one of them is to visit Fallingwater with my two sons when they're the age I think they might be able to appreciate his work. I think about walking up to the house and I know it will bring me to tears. Like you said even thinking about it tears me up. I was trying to design a lounge chair a few weeks ago and was having problems making it look modern, streamlined and sleek, so just thinking about this man designing an entire house to bring an emotional or spiritual connection to it just blows me away. Greatest American architect ever baby!

Interesting but not pretty. Harsh and too square. Why we have so many different architectural designs. Everyone likes different stuff.
That is very insightful. One thing is that viewing via video or photographs is vastly different than being in person. In person you may have a slightly different opinion. Nonetheless, thank you for viewing and your valuable critique
I rather like it because it’s literally ‘outside of the box’. Too many houses are just plain boxes IMO
It’s a shame the house is so sparsely furnished. As a visitor attraction it would help ppl visualize the spaces much better were they fully furnished. I still really like it tho
@@catclelland2447 I agree! I am very disappointed that it is devoid of appropriate furniture. Furthermore, the U of Chicago uses it for gatherings etc….in my opinion that is just wrong considering its historical significance

Thanks for the feedback. It’s always a gamble as to which technique to use primarily
I spent about 12 hours in this cave back in 1983. It was both beautiful and the scariest thing I've ever done. The waist-deep water wasn't bad, but wriggling (like worms) through long tiny tunnels (barely shoulder with and 12" high) on our bellies was the worst. I'd NEVER do anything like that today. And possibly the most memorable part of that day was after coming out of the cave, looking up and seeing the sky. Completely white with stars. I've never seen a night sky like that before or since that day. Great experience and a day I'll never forget.
For sure
thanks for this video.. my primary inspiration - Frank Lloyd Wright
