Ft-710 non-Yaesu linear Amplifier PTT ranting
Hints on connecting a Yaesu FT-710 to a NON-Yaesu Linear Amplifier.
Here is one resource, that I found on Ebay. Radio Dan W7RF has a store on Ebay.
-Keying Buffer Model RBI-1
-FT-710 Amplifier relay keying cable
-DC power supply for RBI-1
*I have NOT reviewed the above devices. So, you may want to contact Radio Dan's store on Ebay and ask if the RBI-1 has been tested on a Yaesu FT-710.
The DX engineering web site did list interfacing devices for the FTdx-10 and FTdx101. Nothing for the FT-710. So, you may want to contact DX engineering to find out if they have something for the FT-710 that is not on their web site.
If you have a Linear Amplifier, you should contact the manufacture (if they are currently in business) and ask for information regarding interfacing your amp to a FT-710.
You should also contact Yaesu and ask for information on using a Non-Yaesu linear amplifier with your FT-710.

How do you hook a 710 to a Mercury tuner and amp?
Good Question. Yaesu did not make it easy to connect a "Non-Yaesu" external auto-tuner or a "Non-Yaesu" external power amplifier. I will try to do a detail video to get around this. Keep a look out for it.
I hope to have a video out, 11/27/2024, for the PTT interface of a FT-710, to a "NON-Yaesu" external linear amplifier. Meanwhile doing some research, I found someone on UA-cam who has suggested using a direct cable, without any buffering, to connect the PTT for the linear. This could be dangerous and damage the FT-710 if the Linear Amplifier does not have the proper electronic buffer circuit for the PTT. Have you contacted Mercury Amplifier company and asked for information for connecting your FT-710 PTT control to your Mercury Amplifier? I will send you a message here when my video is ready.
hi folks
Hay Bob: Where did you get your paperwork for the mirco? Overlooked but haven't found anything. If you could let me know I would appreciate. Thanks
I thought I was having a seizure
Humh!… Well now I know. Been trying to figure how to do this, connect to my ft-710, and my 130’ long balun and fc-40 tuner. Wuh, …yeah. becomes much easier when you have the correct stuff. Mine apparently came missing the data cable. D’OH!!! …as Homer Simpson says at times like this.

Two different radios with different features. The FT710 has a fine/fast function with depress option to use..Try it!
Having both but i run thetis on the hermes and NR2 and the hermes wins hands down also dont run pre amp on the 710 but nice test i just get totally different results. 710 very good at noise reduction but not a patch on thetis, well thats my results.
Any updates ?
Shame you cannot use the VN66AF in place of the transistors that went kapoot.
Hello, modestly it seems to me that to understand the difference in audio quality between ICOM IC-7300 vs YAESU FT-710, it would be wise to take as a reference the ICOM IC-7400. Why? Personally, I believe that the manufacturer ICOM has made a huge mistake. ICOM focused primarily on a customer budget (sales price) of €1200 to produce its ICOM 7300. According to you, why today is the ICOM IC-7400 (25 years old) better in Rx than the YAESU FT-710 and ICOM IC-7300, and competes without complex with the FTDX10 at the Rx level ???🤔 Obviously, the design and the sales price of ICOM IC-7400 was well above ICOM IC-7300 (marketing date: 2015) Cordiales 73' Diki58
A better explanation of the eq settings would be helpful. I didn't notice the over use of And. I wonder if you have tried it with any of the Heil mics or head sets.
Hi Bob, a quick question if you please. Can the s/s plate be removed from the box?
Cool test. I wonder how many bits the ADC in the Yaesu is, or what ADC they are using. They sounded pretty similar though. The HL2 sounds pretty good for what it costs.
Is this any better than the built in tuner in the Ft-991a?
I have not tested the FT-991a tuner.
Yes, the internal tuner will only match up to a 3:1 swr, the FC-40 will tune just about anything. I own 2 of these tuners, one on my FTDX10 and one on my FT-991A.
Do you have a video explaining how to extend de data cable?
good video but it would be a lot more readable with a camera on a tripod. The image shaking to much to get clear view on the settings in menus.Cheers
Where is the results video to hear the different mic's? I sat here waiting to hear what each mic sounds like over the air.
how did you determine the resister that you used to feed audio into the radio?
ein wirklich tolles video.
Just turn off the pre amp .i didn't understand what you was saying the radio volume was bit HI.
Next time set the video camera on a tripod.
Put on ice cream is making me dizzy within that camera around I can't watch it the more I got to find another video to watch. 73 K4BWN
Icom IC-7300 is best. that watery sound from the 710 🤮
I love the way it looks. Wish it was a little more robust. I do have the authorized version from China called (tru)sdx which works well. Not perfect because I assembled and tuned it. But I’ve made a lot of contacts on it. Mostly cw. Thanks for this series of videos! I was hoping they had improved this rig. But I guess not. 73’s de n5vwn
I like the incremental tuning knob on the Icom’s. As the VFO will speed up depending how fast I am spinning the VFO knob so I can scroll across the band very quickly! Plus being able to change the colors on the waterfall to custom colors (RGB) and it’s sensitivity is really nice! 73
I use an FT-710aess as an HF receiver. It is quite interesting to listen to the world.
Hi Bob. You might want to retune that rig using the (tr)uSDX tuning procedure as a reference as the outputs are nearly identical. An online search will find it for you. It sounds like the band tunings for the Class E outputs are way off, which is unfortunately very common. The Chinese simply wind the toroids by turn count and call it good, but it isn't. That's just not close enough for Class E. The coils need to be hand-tuned for each band to make the FET's happy. I use a NanoVNA for the job. As Class E uses a resonant output circuit the input power supply's RF Drain choke and the output tuned circuits have to be tuned for resonance at the center point of interest in each band. This pushes up the efficiency to around 80 to 90% if you're careful to spread or squeeze or remove turns exceedingly carefully. I spent an entire Saturday tuning my 5-band output toroids, but the result was worth it. At that efficiency the FET's won't cook on you unless you've tuned for more than 6 watts or so and your SWR is high. The 170 output FET's can't handle much over 50 volts on the peaks. I use a 52 volt Zener across them to clamp them down, just in case. But once they are tuned up, and a good match to 50 Ohms is obtained they will work quite well into a decent antenna. QRP just isn't impressive when used with a subpar antenna. Such antennas work OK with 100 watts, but not so well with 5W. But once you get everything tuned up the rigs work surprisingly well.
Good to know. After I made this video, did watch the a "(tr)uSDX" tuning procedure, somewhere on UA-cam and that video is a great reference to correct some of the PA reliability issues. Thanks for your input.
Sounds like a bearing problem to me. Squeaking. My flex plate is knocking on decel, I think.
I enjoy the m90d
The IC-7300 can do the same tuning tricks and some extra. If you have a recent firmware on the IC-7300 you can use the Multi knob to tune 1Khz steps (and the Mic up/down) buttons also work. It's also possible to make the main knob do 1Khz steps which I leave on most times and then quickly go to fine tune if needed. Also the IC-7300 has acceleration on the big knob which means if you turn fast it moves faster steps too. Another trick is it can do continuous scroll the waterfall even outside the bands which is very nice (it beeps when you go out of band). I played with a FTDX10 but I don't like how they operate, I have the same issues with the Ft991a. I went from a FT950 & FT857d to an IC-7300.
That makes some sense. I know the Hermes uses a little dynamic range limited. It uses a cable chip and I do not know the ADC in the 710. Noise can be more pronounced if you are dynamic range limited.
It would have been better without any DNR in use.
I am fortunate enough to live in a low noise environment, nearest neighbour 600 meters. Me and a pal did testing purely weak sigs on top band thriugh to 10m . We didn't have the ic710 but my friend brought over his ftdx 10 and ic7600 ,ic 706iig a ts 590s ,my ic7300, a old ic781 ts 870 and my ic7300 . Our findings were not very much in any of them but ts590s was best on most bands with the ftdx10 winning on another band . Only my ic7300 has a very unsatisfactory RF gain which really grinds my gears on top band any other rig outperforms the ic7300 my old ic781 and ts870 has a wonderful RF gain , even my old little ft817 though cant deal with adjacent qrm on pure weak, low noise sigs it is right up there . But most people are struggling with qrm and qrn so weak sigs with low noise isn't the main issue for most ? But if you are lucky enough like me to have 0s on most bands almost any rig will work just fine , our experience was kenwood just had a very slight edge with the ftdx10 a very close 2nd the ic7600 3rd , ic7300 was marginally down. However introducing noise (especially top band )where you need a good RF control my ic7300 is easily the worst of the bunch . That doesn't make it a bad rig , just not the best at backing off noise .
Yes, the Yaesu FT-710 and the IC-7300 have their differences, but ever so slight. First off, the same exact speaker should be used comparing two different radios. An experienced user can adjust filtering, RF Gain, EQ etc. and make one radio sound just as good as the other. I couldn't choose one over the other. They run neck and neck in my experience.
Posición de NR en icom 7300? Se escucha muy bien. Gracias por el vídeo. Un like para tí. 👍
I have the FT-710 and the IC-705. The 705's band changing scheme is the same as the IC-7300. The Icom has a bid advantage over the 710 when going through the band stacking registers. On the Icom, I set band stacking register #1 as CW, #2 and #3 as SSB. When I got to 40 meters and want to start out on CW using BSR #1, I push and hold the 7 mhz icon until all three BSR's show up on the screen. I then pick #1 that is ready to go for CW. With the FT-710, I have to cycle through the BSR's until I get to BSR #1. Since that is most annoying, I turned off he BSR feature and just go to what band I want. I then use the mouse to change from one mode to the other. Both radios have their fine points and both have their weak points. I did a lot of research before I settled on the FT-710 Field. I think I made the right choice for my needs. I actually purchased mine to be used in a POTA activation. But I like it so much I use it in the primary station most of the time. Barry, KU3X
OK, just uploaded video "Ft-710 non-Yaesu linear Amplifier PTT ranting" on youtube.
The Ft710 is just a better radio.
can you transmit on the 160m band? Thanks
Yes and No. It will transmit on 160 when connected to a dummy load. However, there are no "Low Pass" filters for 160 meters. Only has "Low Pass" filters for 10,15,20, and 40 meters.
@@hemihead Thanks
I noticed this rig on eBay tonight. Thanks for uploading, and looking forward to any new videos you may have planned on it. It's interesting for sure. But those switches and the SSB quality seem disappointing. 73!

Next time you are watching one of my videos, add a challenge to your viewing by adding the number of times that I say the word "AND". Then, let me know which video has the most.🤓
I got the lower-priced Yaesu desk mike and it seems to work fine, according to contact reports. Not sure why you want to go through all this trouble..
For your entertainment.
This is where you save menu settings to the SD card. Call the setting something like D-104, stock mi, for another one, etc. Thanks.
to avoid "OVF" - Adjust the RF Gain DOWN to the point where the band scope is not all blue, so that you are seeing vertical lines on a black background. The RFG indicator will light because you have reduced the RF gain from it’s center position - ignore this and turn up the AF gain to compensate for the reduced audio from turning the RF gain down. Just a suggestion that has helped me over the years.... Best and 73 de W3HLS, john
