Voice and Choice: Assent in Action in ABA Services
Assent is a critical topic in ABA today. There are a lot of people talking about assent but in this video, I show examples of assent and assent withdrawal and provide a step-by-step guide to implementing the assent model in your practice.
We all must work together to ensure that individuals receiving ABA have both a voice and a choice in services. The history of ABA is grim and some of the practices still used today fail to consider the client as a true autonomous individual.

    For the final fieldwork verification form, if there are more than four supervisors, since the form only has room for four supervisors, do you attach a separate sheet with the other supervisors? Does anyone know if the BACB has any official statement about that? Also, the example in this video for final verification for multiple supervisors has spots for 6 supervisors. The current form seems to only have rom for 6 supervisors. Does anyone know how to find the form with room for 6 supervisors?

    • @masteraba4260
      @masteraba4260 3 дні тому

      Yes, I would attach a second FVF with the remainder of the supervisors listed. The BACB requires you to use the current form, so don't look for a different form with more fields. Make sure you're using the most recent form and are downloading it from their website. I haven't had this experience, though so I would recommend contacting the BACB directly to make sure your form meets their expectations. It's better and easier to ask the question before submitting the form than if they reject it.

      @@masteraba4260 So, instead of creating a separate sheet with just the additional supervisors names for the main supervisor to sign, you would create two forms?

    Thank you for this! Question - if documenting Concentrated hours each month, when do you multiply the 1.33? According to Ripley, you do so at the end, so 1500 total hours x 1.33 = 2000. But, I've also heard you multiply each month's total hours by 1.33. So for example, June total hours (130) x 1.33 = 173.9. If this is the case, then I was told that 130 is still the maxiumum, so actually, I could only submit 97.74 total hours each month, since 97.74 x 1.33 = 130. Thank you!!

    • @masteraba4260
      @masteraba4260 28 днів тому

      This is a great question. I don't have a lot of experience with the concentrated fieldwork. The purpose of the concentrated fieldwork is to accumulate your experience faster. if you look in the handbook, you need 1,500 hours vs the 2,000 hours. You only need to multiply by 1.33 if your experience is split between the different types of experiences. Ripley is a reliable source and is likely accurate, but I would email the BACB to confirm that you're calculating your hours correctly. All of us do our best to interpret their rules, but it's clear we don't all understand them the same way.

    So, what is the next step? ... Saying "Stop" doesn't seem to be working.

    • @masteraba4260
      @masteraba4260 3 місяці тому

      The next step is to teach the child how to get what he wants in a better way. In this example, the child wants his father's attention so you would want to teach him to ask for his attention in any way that he can. For example, if he speaks, we might teach him to say "play with me." What's critical to making it work is the adult being flexible. If we teach him to say "play with me," then the father has to be flexible and stop what he's doing to play with his son. It disrupts what the father is trying to do, but if the challenging behavior (in this example jumping) is more effective in getting his father's attention than communication, it won't work. This is a simplified version of the next step. It's critical to get advice from someone who can observe the behavior as it's happening to account for all the possible variables.

    Question: For the FVF for multiple supervisors - I am the responsible supervisor. Do I add myself under the section "Supervisors Who Provided Supervision at the Organization" AND under the "Responsible Supervisor and Trainee Attestation" section? My guess is yes, but want to be sure. One more question: My trainee had more than 2,000 hours - we kept collecting hours while she finished up her coursework. Do we ONLY include the 2,000 on the form or can we add in the extra that she completed?

    • @masteraba4260
      @masteraba4260 4 місяці тому

      Great questions. I recommend contacting the BACB to be sure but based on my experience, yes, you will enter yourself under both sections, the "Supervisors Who Provided Supervision at the Organization" AND under the "Responsible Supervisor and Trainee Attestation" sections. Also, it's fine to include more supervision hours than the minimum as long as the numbers still align with the minimum for supervised hours and for unrestricted activities and you don't exceed the maximum number of hours per month. Make sure if you're adding more than 2000 hours that you have more than 13 months of supervision experience (less than 130 hours per month). I hope that makes sense!

      Medical necessity is the criteria that insurance companies use to determine if they will pay for the service. Many insurance companies, especially Medicaid will reject any goal that includes the word "tolerates," stating that "tolerating" something isn't considered medically necessary. In this video, I'm referring to goals that could possibly be medically necessary but might be rejected anyway, specifically a child tolerating an adult washing his hair, tolerating an adult brushing his teeth, or tolerating a hair cut. It's impossible to go from not even allowing an adult to do these tasks to teaching him to do them for himself without first teaching him to tolerate an adult doing them. Simply changing the language in the goal to make it about teaching him to do it for himself fixes the problem for everything except a haircut. Rephrasing the goal to state that he will "sit" for a haircut or that he will "accept" an adult cutting his hair without engaging in target behaviors worked to get this goal approved.

    I sort of had a question. When filling out my FV forms I had to do three forms for three different organizations. Do I need to put the total number of hours including the 1.33 multiplier? Or do I need to just put their actual number I used and just checking the concentration box since I did the concentration field work hours?

    • @masteraba4260
      @masteraba4260 Рік тому

      If all of your hours for the specific experience met the criteria for concentrated fieldwork hours, you should enter in the actual number and check the concentrated fieldwork box. The multiplier is to help you figure out how many hours you need in total if your experience is split between concentrated and supervised fieldwork. I hope this helps!

      @masteraba4260 Рік тому

      Hi Estania! The prorated box should only be checked if your supervision experience only occurred for part of any of the months (i.e. you took a 2 week long vacation or started or ended your supervision experience in the middle of the month). It's about individual months, not your overall supervision hours. I hope this helps!

    Really good explanation. I’m still have a question. During a moth do we have to collect all kind of hours? Or it’s possible that in a moth I just collect individual hours for example

    • @masteraba4260
      @masteraba4260 Рік тому

      I'm not sure I completely understand your question, but I will do my best to answer. Let me know if this doesn't answer the question you have. The BACB allows you to collect only individual hours for your entire experience. They limit the amount of group supervision you have. So you can have all your hours in a month be individual, but you can't have all your hours be group supervision. If you record group supervision hours, you must also record individual supervision as well. The BACB also regulates restricted and unrestricted hours. You must have some restricted hours each month to fulfill your observation requirement, but you can't have only restricted activities. No more than 40% of your total experience can be restricted activities. I hope this helps. I know it's a confusing process. Your BCBA supervisor should be able to help you understand the requirements.
