Steelhead in the Rocky River!
Переглядів 39Місяць тому
Nothing to do this cold weekend; so try our luck for some steelhead; drive 90 miles, have brunch, wait for the sun to warm up the Rocky River and give us access to, then hit the water. Not one bite; skunked!

Salmon Fishing Pere Marquette

I knew I was blessed to have my long time fishing buddy Dave along with my two boys and their friends. What I didn't know when I booked this fishing cabin exactly a year ago that we were going to be blessed with a great mix of experience, enthusiasm, energy, great fishing access, great weather and best time of the year for salmon fishing. We were truly lucky.

We joined Dave at Bacon Woods for a day of steelhead fishing. The bite was on in the morning until about 10:30, then it died off. We moved to Mill Hollow to try our luck, sure thing, the afternoon bite was on around 2 pm.
Unexpected day steelhead fishing the Vermillion river

We didn't expect favorable conditions after the rain on Friday, we knew that flow rate, Turbidity and water level would be concerning, but it was still better than staying home on a 50 Deg F day. When we reached the Vermillion, we realized that none of the locals were fishing. Yet, it seemed that we had a 4 hour window early in the morning and had success.

Fishing for steelhead in Vermillion River, Oh. Early hits in the morning and then died off. Water was stained, so egg sack was more suitable for those conditions.
A day on the Vermillion

As water temps warming up and the little rain we got during the week helped push some steelhead up the river, we decided to hit the Vermillion river in Ohio.

Started the trip out of Knoxville, TN on November 10 down to Fontana Dam, NC. Took a water taxi from the Fontana Marina to campsite 76, setup camp, fished a little and stayed the night. Headed out to campsite 86 about 12 miles. Fished a little at Hazel Creek. No signal. Headed back to the Marina the next day, had better scenery all the way to the Fontana Dam.

On my second trip up north to the Pere Marquette, Branch Township, Michigan, rain was not going to be a good enough reason to miss out on an exciting day of fishing.
Fishing for Salmon in the Pere Marquette

Planned this trip four months in advance with friends and my two boys. All the young anglers on this trip never fished for salmon, had to buy their gear the week before and were intimidated by the idea of using a fly rod; so we let them try it without fly rods. The weather was absolutely great the five days we were in the Pere Marquette river. The salmon was continuing their run even though the...

    Three thing I can't do well for fishing. 1 Fly fishing I cannot keep my wrist straight from all the bass finesse twitching I've done, lol 2 center pin reel casting, I'm too impatient for it, & still l haven't gotten over a baitcaster type use. lol 3 baitcaster reel. I'm trying I even have reel with a centrifugal brake, but to no luck.

    Awesome job! What hardware did you use to mount into the T-tracks of the topper? I've been having a hell of a time figuring out what bolts I can get to slide in there and use to do pretty much what you did.

      Glad you liked it. I usually have an 8 gallons water tank and a tandem kayak mounted on the rack, driving at 70 mph. I have not seen any damage or bowing. My confidence in the kayak grows with every trip.

    Great-looking build. Any noise/whistling coming from the rack at highway speeds?

    • @bassamawad
      @bassamawad Рік тому

      When I took it on city roads, I didn’t notice any wind noise. I attribute that to the rack being low profile and mounted farther back on the camper shell. I wish I tested it before I installed the accessories (awning, shower curtain, recovery tracks and shower tank).

    • @bassamawad
      @bassamawad Рік тому

      Now that I’ve had all my accessories mounted and got the truck on the road, it’s not bad at all. Having the rack on the camper makes a huge difference in wind noise.
