The Strange Connector - Art & Play

Hi and Welcome!
I am The Strange Connector, your guide on this channel! Join me to have fun experimenting with art supplies in a distinctly... AHEM... lo-fi fashion, and for a pinch of surrealist humour....
I am not an expert when it comes to visual arts, but I am an artist by training (I originally trained as a Sound Artist). I work in a multidisciplinary fashion, and also make music. Right now, this channel will be primarily devoted to experimenting with drawing and painting, as I like to keep my other stuff separate, so I can feel freer (the world likes artists to neatly fit into niches... and I don't)! Let's have fun together!!
PS - I am currently doing some further postgraduate study in a field related to art so I am quite busy. I have a tendency to take on too many projects because I get excited, so I don't know how frequently I will be uploading to UA-cam, but I am hoping to do so at least monthly! So, stick around! 😊

PART 2: Drawing DAVID LYNCH with MARCO TRIBUTE MASTERS pencils on DERWENT LIGHTFAST PAPER
Join me as I sketch David Lynch using Marco Tribute Masters pencils on Derwent Lightfast Paper - fitting tribute to the master he was!
"This is the water, and this is the well. Drink full, and descend. The horse is the white of the eyes, and dark within."
This is Part 2 of my exploration of the Marco Tribute Masters pencil set. For Part 1, where I unbox, swatch, and test the pencils, visit here: ua-cam.com/video/TuyksuT04_I/v-deo.html (just a heads up - it's a lengthy video, but includes a brief cameo from the Feline Overlords).

Here are some great video reviews of the Marco Tribute Masters set from two fantastic art UA-camrs:

Please note that these two reviews are from a few years ago and the pencils I have look a little different: they have a different finish, golden caps, a thicker core and no white layer between the varnish and wood. Marco may have changed the pencils slightly in the last 3 years - I bought my set directly from them, so they are not dupes. I'm sharing these two reviews however because they are thorough and from two of the best channels available!

In this very long, very rambling video, I am unboxing, swatching and testing out the absolutely gorgeous Marco Tribute Masters colouring pencils set for the very first time!! This set is absolutely gorgeous and a fairly priced alternative to the (here in the UK) much more expensive Tombow Irojiten colouring pencil set. Late night swatching, for a chatty, relaxed look at three types of opaque, water-based paints that come in pan form: Holbein’s Opaque Watercolour Cakes (set of 24), Holbein’s Shin-Gansai (set of 14), and Caran d’Ache’s Studio Gouache (set of 14 plus white). Which one might be the best fit for you? What do the tins look like? How do the swatches turn out? And are they actually... the same paints...

Thank you for this review. There really isn’t a lot of information about it. Could you let us know if the back side is just different but workable as well, or if it doesn’t behave nicely?
Yes, I think you can use the backside, but the texture is a little different - smooth and closer to HP. I have not tried fully painting on the backside of the sheets so I cannot 100% confirm, but I have done swatching and washes on the back and the paint seemed to behave normally, looked vibrant and lifted normally too, suggesting the back may also be surface sized. So if you want to make a sketchbook out of it (or buy a Fuumuui sketchbook), my guess is that you should be able to use both sides.
Good video, background audio is a tad bit high and distracting. Please do a video on how you “block in” shapes and proportion your pieces. Looks like you do contour drawing to find the shape. I prefer this style of artwork
Hi 😊 Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! Yes, I’m still having some trouble getting the audio levels right between the voiceover and the background sound. It sounds completely different on my computer compared to my tablet. On the tablet, the background is almost silent, so I tend to adjust it too much since I'm not sure how it sounds on other devices, and I don’t own a smartphone to check either! I usually edit audio with Sony Studio Monitor headphones (which, fun fact, were also used by David Lynch, haha), so that probably changes how it sounds for me as well. On a previous video I put the background quite low (the muzak in my art haul video) and on my iPad it is completely inaudible and that really bugs me! Hopefully at some point I ca find the right balance. Doesn’t help that my setup here at home is, to put it mildly, completely substandard, haha. Can you believe I *do* actually have some training in sound (though I was always more on the arty side of sound art than the techy one)? 😂 I really appreciate your feedback - it’s super helpful to know how it sounds to viewers! Regarding your comment about the drawing, could you please explain a bit more? I want to make sure I fully understand what you’re asking. Do you like how I am doing this, or are you suggesting something different? And are you asking for me to show more detail? Thank you so much - super grateful for your input and time! ❤
RIP David Lynch (January 20, 1946 - January 16, 2025) “I don't know why people expect art to make sense. They accept the fact that life doesn't make sense.”
"the link to that video is in the top left corner" (finds out after uploading that it is not possible to add link cards on the left corner. Hahahaha, Ooops)
Also there is an accidental spelling mistake ("polichromo") that I didn't spot in one of the the text descriptions and that cannot be corrected now that I have uploaded... and it is going to BUG me FOREVER. AaAaRRrGggh...
CORRECTION: I just double-checked, and the current Marco listing shows that the core of the Tribute Masters pencils is actually 4mm, not the 3.6mm mentioned in the @TheArtGearGuide review I cited in my video. This means the pencils I have are definitely different from those reviewed by others on UA-cam three years ago - and it's not just the varnish! I haven't measured them myself since I don't have the right tools, but they did look like really thick cores to me, much thicker than the Brutfuner and more similar to Holbeins, Luminance, and Derwent LF! I'm not sure what this means for the quality since I don't own one of the older sets, but it suggests that these pencils are different from other budget brands from China. They also lack the white inner varnish layer and strong smell of those other pencils.
It's a little frustrating that we weren't shown the art materials (they weren't taken out of the boxes). You show the box, but don't open them, WHY.😩
Ah, I am sorry that was disappointing! I am planning separate videos for some of them - that's why I don't go too in-depth here. I don't like to unbox things until I need to use them as I don't want things to spoil (I like to keep them sealed until I start using them as these are all bought with my own money), and also this video would be incredibly long otherwise! I have however recorded some video already for some of the items shown here - e.g. the Holbein opaque cakes which was the following video on my channel, and the Fuumuui paper which was after that, if you want to check that out. That paper is great and I really recommend it if you are after cheap 100% cotton paper, BTW!! I take your point though - I really should have explained that better in the video - sorry!!! Maybe I should come back and add link boxes to the video, linking to the individual reviews of each product after I have uploaded them. So then future viewers will be able to click on the link to see what each product is like. For some of these items I had recorded video of me swatching and painting, but I have decided to scrap those videos for the time being because of some drama happening re certain companies' marketing departments being awful to another UA-camr, and that left a bitter taste in my mouth so I personally don't feel good indirectly promoting their products (I will use them up as I paid for them out of my own pocket and they are good products, but I don't want to do separate videos specifically on them any more right now). Though others may feel differently and that's perfectly fine (and anyway those companies have plenty of people extolling their virtues already) - that's just how I personally feel, and I hope that won't be a disappointment. But do watch out for future videos as I will be showing many of these items in them. The Haul video is more of a "preview". I am on a hiatus for a little bit because I am studying on a postgrad course and have a bunch of assignments due in at the moment, but after that I have planned more videos and one of the first is going to be with the Marie's Chinese pigment paints I showed here (which are wonderful) and I also started filming the Marco pencils (swatching & drawing), but first I want to revisit Viceversa paper (my first video the channel and what started this all) as I have bought more sketchbooks and paper from them and really want to showcase these. In general right now I kind of feel like I want to showcase products by smaller or less promoted companies in the future. Oh, I have also planned a comparison video with one of the products shown in this video and some very well-known products by a Big Company that I think are literally the same product but ten times more expensive. I suspected as much and I bit the bullet and bought their product specifically to investigate, and I feel my suspicions were confirmed. I have done quite a bit of swatching on camera too but want to do some painting and drawing to go with it as I don't want my videos to just end up being infomercials! I am not paid for any of this and don;t really plan on having a huge viewership (I think that would stress me out, frankly) - I am doing it because I love to paint and draw and because I love to have a place where I can be nerdy about art materials and art supplies without driving my IRL friends crazy with my info-dumping, haha. So my rate of uploading may not be super-fast, but there will be more on these art materials, I promise. Thank you so much for watching & for leaving a comment - it's really appreciated!!!❤!
PS - sorry for the very long response. I am *very* chatty, haha
@@TheStrangeConnectorArt Hahaha, no worries! I completely understand wanting to keep your art materials in pristine condition. But as a viewer, seeing boxes upon boxes of gorgeous art materials but not the materials themselves feels like being brought close to climax, and then other person goes, "welp, I'm done." I am so, sorry for the crassness of that, but that's exactly how it felt 😂 Thank you for being so gracious about my comment! I wish you all the best! 💟
@@VerucaS9lt your feedback is very appreciated! I do want to keep the actual unboxing/demos for separate videos, but you make very good points so in the future I will try and figure out a way to address that. It would be helpful if I had more time to make more videos so the wait to see what's actually in the box wasn't so long. argh! I find that part frustrating too, because I have to wait my end as well, and it's torture, haha! Or maybe I can select a few things to open and show (and keep the others for their own dedicated videos). Food for thought!! Thank you so much 😊
@@VerucaS9lt PPS - I love your username!
I was a commercial artist years ago. I took up watercolor but I dropped it. 7 years later, I am now painting again and my husband has joined me! He is new to art but making the prettiest paintings. I'm impressed.
That's so lovely! I wish my partner would join me too, and we tried one time but never since - he is always too busy for art or crafting. It's such a wonderful thing for you to be able to share that with your significant other! Love it and you both! 😊

I like visually this brush because I didn't buy , I live in Brasil , I call dragon scale brush!!!!!
I will def see if I can get more in the future when I visit my family in Italy as it's really nice. I started with natural and mixed hair brushes (I feel conflicted because I am not a meat eater, though I am not vegan either) so I find synthetic hard to get used to but these are beautiful and feel great in the hand too and for the quality they are very reasonably priced.
I strangely enjoyed this.

No need to apologize 😊. I like your way of talking and showing the items very much. It is nice watching. Thank you very much 😘

Amazing items, thanks for sharing! I'll be looking out for some of them, for sure. Please check out my art channel as well. Hope you like it! ❤ Greetings from Portugal!
Just want to add the Maries' Chinese traditional "museum grade" set of paints is the highest grade among the three you mentioned. The "masters" grade (I assume it is in a blue box), that's the second grade, while the brown set is the student set. I have used traditional Chinese paints on watercolour paper, I think they act somewhat similar to Gansai Paints. So if you have experiences with those, maybe you will like Chinese Traditional paints too.
also TMI, I really DON'T recommend making Chinese traditional paints into pans, they will dry and crumble up REAL bad. I did that once, and they literally will crumble into small pieces and fall out of the pan. (not that easy to rewet as well)
Thank you so much for the info re the Marie's paints!!! I suspected this was the case but was not sure, so I really appreciate you taking the time to explain! I use Chinese and Japanese paints and absolutely love them, but I use them in a Western way so I am no expert and am yet to try them on rice paper (I do have a stack of rice paper and a collection of Chinese brushes that I use for ink). I follow a few Chinese artists both on UA-cam and instagram and am aware how much goes into every aspect of creating a painting, from totally different ways of holding the brush, breathing, moving one's body even! I will never be able to truly know what it all entails as that's another lifetime's worth of practice but I appreciate Chinese artists' skills so, so much!
I own two more sets of Marie's (student grade) paints as well as the Paul Rubens Guçai (not the glitter ones) in both pan and tube form. I have many sets of gansai, too (my favorite is Kissho). It's truly beautiful stuff
@@summer12371 A very good point! Yes, I did find that this was an issue when I got my first set of Chinese tube paints and excitedly tried pouring them into pans.😆 It makes perfect sense it should be so - gouache is of similar consistency and will go brittle too, if dried in pans. But to clarify re my comment above: I meant I have Chinese paints that were sold as sets in pans (like the Marie's four seasons set I show in the video), so they have some kind of honey or glycerin in them (not sure what but I presume one or the other? Maybe you know what it is?) to keep them softer like gansai and prevent them from crumbling. Easily misunderstood as I have noticed that the Paul Rubens Chinese paints in pans are strangely not generally available for sale in the West from Paul Rubens - though I think they are listed on the Chinese-language version of their website, if I remember correctly. I found mine on Amazon listed as generic paints, but I recognised the branding immediately and snapped them up and they are genuine Paul Rubens Chinese paints in pans. Maybe I should do a video about all my Chinese paints but I feel like such a non-expert about Chinese painting ! I can do it from a Western perspective (not that I am an expert in that style of painting either - just a person with opinions sharing them and their art on the internet 😆). EDIT: just realised you posted your second comment before mine so you probably were not responding to that; I have a tendency to be overly chatty (I forget to rein in my enthusiasm), so I hope I did not just completely overwhelm you with my maaaaassive responses. Oops. Hahaha. Either way, I appreciate you taking the time to comment very much !!!
@@TheStrangeConnectorArt Regarding the comment of pouring Chinese tube paints into pans, I don't have a definite answer why it crumbles when it dries. However, one reason could be it the "glue" aka binder they use in Chinese traditional tube paints are different from gum arabic. It can be plant based or animal based, depending on what the brand decides to use. I have looked up on Chinese forums, it seems like no matter what you do to these dried paints, they will not return to the original consistency and vibrancy (disregarding the pans versions), therefore it is always recommended to squeeze and use while you paint. Regarding Paul Rubens though, this brand is such a mess to me cause it seems like they don't synchronise theirs listings (?) / products in the Western and Chinese market. I have always bought their tubes paints on Taobao and their fifth generation have some interesting and affordable colours (including potter's pink and Zirconium blue, aka same pigment as Kusakabe's). However, it does not seem like they are selling this at in the West, very strange to me. In additional, I have heard not so good reviews about their pan paints (traditional Chinese paints / watercolours ) on the Chinese market, so I stayed away from them. I would love to see your perspective on their paints. I appreciate you recognise these paints have their own properties and can be different from Watercolours / Gansai. I have seen many videos calling these non-western traditional paints as watercolour and am quite frustrated by it (Pet peeve of mine). Nonetheless, I hope to see your art with these paints and opinions as well. P.S: don't worry about the long responses, I love artists getting all chatty and enthusiastic, maybe some other random viewer can enjoy these comments of ours as well in the future.
no timestamps for this one as I want to avoid spoilers (though I do show *most* of the supplies at the beginning)
UPDATE - I’m adding link cards in this video that will take you to my other videos where I unbox, swatch, review, or showcase artwork created with the items from this haul (consider this haul more of a sneak peek). Just click on the links in the video or in the description! I’ll be adding more as I get more videos done! About the Marco pencil set I talked about in the video: after making my video, I noticed a comment from a colouring book artist on a recent @theArtGearGuide video. They mentioned that the Marco pencils apparently don’t work very well on colouring book paper. I wanted to share this with you because I am not a colouring book artist myself, so I was not aware that the texture of colouring paper can be that different from that of sketching or art paper. I really enjoy using these pencils on sketching paper, but I haven't tried them on colouring books myself, so I thought it was important to let you know! If you decide to use these and they don’t perform well on colouring book pages, you might try scanning and printing the images you want to colour onto sketch paper instead, or you could skip the Marco pencils for colouring books altogether. Another option is to choose a colouring book that has paper with a little more texture, if these are available, or prime the page with some transparent pastel/drawing ground.
Hold your horses! I am not able to pin this comment (still waiting on that elusive UA-cam approval), but I have since bought 4 extra sketchbooks with handmade paper, and the paper in each book appears to be different! It is all handmade cotton paper, however - just different textures and tints. So, if you order from Viceversa, keep in mind that the paper you may receive might be slightly different to the one above, so may not be suited for certain media (e.g. pencil, if the texture is rough, for example). It is all however very high quality paper at an amazing price (two of the sketchbooks I got were a full A4 size, 300gsm!) and I am super excited to test it out! I have also just placed another order for plain paper rather than sketchbooks - I have bought sheets in every single texture and colour available, so I can do a thorough testing and report back! This will be in a video in maybe a couple of months from now - sorry about the wait!
me: "this paper is really good value - extremely cheap!" also me: (proceeds to spend absolute fortune buying short of every single product on offer)
Thank you for the history lesson and introduction to Viceversa Paper collective. Also thank you for putting your sketchbook through the paces; the quality of the paper speaks for itself. Looking forward to placing an order and experiencing the different weights and textures in person. I have subscribed and look forward to your next video. 😊
Thank you so much! And me too, I am so excited about the other sketchbooks I ordered - I can't wait to test them out and report back! They seem like such a cool little company, too!
Thank you! I have gone to the website and am shopping there. I appreciate the information you’ve given me.
Thank you 😊. Glad to have been of help! Hope you enjoy their products as much as I did!!
Definitely worked for me!
😂
Good werk!. Onwards! 🙂
I also just realised I accidentally uploaded a non-final version of the video, so some of the captions and sound transitions are... rough, and some sounds are missing! Oh well, it stays (the upload took a couple of hours). Could have saved myself the extra work, though! You live and learn. Oops.
I mean... it would still have been rough. Just... maybe a bit less rough, hahaha
