Very funny. Some great books there, chris 👌
So many books about a drunken sailor🤔That aside that’s quite a pile of books! Merry Christmas🤘🏻🎅🏻🤘🏻
Impressive! 🎉
Thank you! And merry Christmas!
@OffMyShelves A Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours, Chris! 💜🎄☃️ Catch you on the other side 😁
Hope u will release a similar vid for best of 2024
Loved this story when it first came out and still do. As someone who's suffered with mental health now, it doesn't quite ring true but it's still an amazing story and piece of work :)
My only problem with Blankets was that you kinda knew the story before you read it. That's a bold statement considering it's autobiographical but if you think of the keywords "American" "Evangelical/Fundamentalist Christian" "childhood" "coming of age" and I think many would know where this story goes. I take nothing away from the artwork which was often sublime but the story left me without questions. Still would recommend it to read but borrow first before buying I guess :/
I’ve waited for this! Lots of good stuff again. I like how you consider how sensible it is to send a drunken sailor to the moon😅It’s Tintin! Of course the most famous drunken sailor goes to moon. And it happened long before USA claimed they landed on the moon. I don’t believe that for a second. You can’t go there without a drunken sailor🤷🏼♂️
@@analogcomics thank you! And I stand by my sensible search for logic! Worst moon crew ever!
I preordered it and it is an absolute masterpiece. It will break your heart (if you have one), but there is beauty in heartbreak.
Thankfully I have a heart and it beat faster in certain places and broke harder in others! totally agree with you!
@@OffMyShelves Agreed!
I have this one in the original French but haven’t read it yet. I read BLAST not long ago and it was one of my best reading experiences ever. Never read anything like it before or after.
I will have to seek out blast to look at and hope for a translation soon!
Hi Chris, Finished it a few days ago. The book, the movie and this graphic novel is great. The art is astonishing.
Glad you enjoyed like I did!
Just finished this book. Great art and moody piece!
Managed to read my copy in time to watch your review🕺Larcenet is a beast! I’m so happy his more realistic style is finally available in print in English. I absolutely love this book. It felt like an extension of the original book. In fact so much that it’d be nice to know how different experience it is for those who have read the book and those who hasnt. I do recommend reading the book. Fast read and as ”silent” as the comic. And so brutal. It has very brutal physical violence but it’s not the most painful aspect of the story. A masterpiece!
Well done on the speed reading before I spoiled anything for you my friend. I am not entirely sure if I did read the book many years ago; I may have just watched the film and muddled things up in my head. Will have to seek it out though to make sure.
Great stuff. It’s a hell of a book, glad to see it making the rounds on UA-cam. Shout out to Analog Comics for being the first to turn me onto it
Thank you! And I am sure you are unaware, we don't compliment @Analogcomics as he is very over confident already and we have to keep the head size in check. Just an fyi for next time!
The art is spectacular but the story is average at best.
The art is stunning...and the story is as well. I mean I'm not sure if your quibbles are with Cormac Mccarthy's actual story (which Larcenet does not change), or with Larcenet's visual storytelling, which is flawless.
Glad you are reading more European comics. Another excellent comic from Larcenet is BLAST but not sure it is published in english. If you are interested in a Classic European cómic series I highly recommend you Thorgal from Van Hamme and Rosinski that is being published in english by Cinebook.
Hope NBM picks up the other magnificent book adaptation by Manu Larcenet, “Brodek’s Report”, in 1 single volume - is as good as this one. Speaking of good his masterpiece “BLAST” should be made available in book format in English (only a digital version was issued, sadly…). Everything else by him is mandatory including the reissue of “Ordinary Victories”. PS - there’s also a illustrated version of the novel (in French) done by Larcenet with exclusive images (I think…)…
This is a spectacular read! So haunting the greys! The art does most of the story!
May I add, I doubt, CROM is the only person you were looking forward to meeting and spending time with at thoughtbubble.
OFFMYSHELVES is the second best scifier code
Sad I missed this
Missed again 😢
Is there a word for that reaction when you feel happy that some one else has finally read and liked the the comic you liked too(Lobster Johnson)? Selfishness? If that's selfishness then that is what I'm feeling now and it's kinda awesome🤗 Did I hear you say you're not going to buy more new comics? I tried that last year. I think I kept that promise six months which was pretty good result in my opinion. Nemesis is on my shopping list. There's Finnish albums available but they're a bit pricey as second hand and the series is incomplete. This new large format in English is the easy winner. You mentioned re-reading older books. I've found myself wanting to do that with many long series recently. There's a particular type of joy when you realize your old collection has that extra value. There should be separate word for a collection that has been accumulated just to have a lot of books and a collection that is actively curated for re-reading value.
The word is sharing my joy! Also it's always nice to see people who see the same thing in something you love as it reinforces your love a little. It helps that both omnibuses were great. I have a big box to open right now and then there are about 5-6 books I have preordered for next year, but that is it for me. Focusing money elsewhere for a bit and I won't struggle finding many things to read. It is a particular type of joy but the issue is the longer I go one reading the bigger the pile of books I love to re-read is, so I will get to a point where I am just going round and round, which I am fine with and its cheaper!
“Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave!!” I love Nemesis the Warlock, you’re right, it’s so much fun and over the top and imaginative. Such a fun read.
Glad you enjoyed it as much as me! Got volume 2 to be cracking on with now!
The early JD case files takes me right back to being that kid running to the newsagent for the next 2000AD…great times. Loved the Lobster Johnston omni’s and have finally pulled Blankets ‘Off My Shelves’ and added to my TBR pile. Cheers Chris 😁👍🏼
Fingers crossed you will see Blankets as worthy of your time. I totally missed 2000ad as a child and teen so I am well happy to be catching up now.
A lot of none super hero titles in this TBR . Lobster Johnson are books I bought a long time ago & still havent cracked open
@@ComicSwag crack it open and I hope you enjoy! I think most of my reading nowadays is minus a few superheroes.
@@OffMyShelves they are a huge investment for sure .. why cant they just be 50 issues & be done Lol
I've been selling books & reorganizing myself I do that every 8 months or so . Always trying to catch up on the to read pile .
What a brilliant watch I will be subscribing
@@Spidey.man.productions thank you my boy!
Yes to All Star Superman. Such a great book and like you, it’s that kind of story that I felt like I fully understood the appeal of the character. Delights was such a good read. Guy has another book coming out next year by Fantagraphics, this time it’s a collection of his paintings.
It’s awesome init?! Glad to hear you enjoyed Delights I really enjoyed it very different. I saw that art book too will keep an eye out! 👍✌️
I still need to get to Mountains of Madness! So much for Spooktober or whatever they call it 😂 Currently working my way through Gideon Falls, since I'd been meaning to read Book 2 for a while but of course have had to go back and re-read Book 1... Search & Destroy is still high on my "to buy when I stop behaving" list (So January probably at this rate XD) Love All-Star Superman of course - can't understand some people not liking Quitely's art. Had the paperback for years then the Absolute was one of the first ones I got when I started collecting. Haven't touched Hickman's Avengers and know very little about it, so that was quite eye-opening 😅 That reminds me, I have several superhero omnibuses to start on 😂 Looking forward to September 👍
Hopefully you are enjoying Gideon Falls; I enjoyed 1 more than 2 but it was enjoyable madness overall, with great art. I don’t get the hate for Quietly either but I’ve seen some people not enjoy it all 🤷🏻♂️ good luck with the reading pile!
@OffMyShelves Just finished it ^_^ Definitely agree on part 1 being better, bit disappointed by the ending, but certainly enjoyed the wild ride up to that point! Seems to be a pattern with some of these horror comics 😅 I recall having a similar experience with Nailbiter. I think Locke & Key wrapped things up better, although it's been a while 🤔 I want to grab the Master editions at some point to re-read. Anyhoo, at least I get to tick a couple of things off the tbr spreadsheet now 😂 **Sidenote on Gideon Falls bk2: man, there were a lot of typos...
It's Lonely at the Centre of the earth is one of my favorites. I loved the art and story in this book. I have depression and I think the story and visual she does is lovely. I work in the field of blindness and Billie Scott misses the mark a bit at the end about how blind people can navigate their environment, especially familiar ones like their homes. Billie not using the stairs like a normal person at the end of the story was so off.
Totally get what you are saying there. Sometimes I find one detail in a book clouds the whole for me too. I think I enjoyed Billie most for the sentiment and humanity as I can’t imagine her depiction of homelessness is too accurate either, but the sentiment was understood. Glad you lives Lonely too. ✌️
Absolutely 👍
All-Star Superman is a masterpiece.
Your superhero stack reminded me that I actually now have one superhero album(yes, album) in my TBR pile. Have you managed to make your TBR pile smaller with this system? Or are you buying faster than reading and just chasing your own tail?
@@analogcomics the next vid will have an update of the tally so I’m gonna have to force you to wait! What is the one superhero btw?
@ I’ll show that superhero album soon in my TBR vids. So you’ll have to wait😜
@@analogcomics well played my friend 👏😂
grand son of my heart by retsudo at the end is pretty high end
Very well summed up! I've read this three times now I think, and I'm still affected by it every time.
@@comicsvstheworld I will be revisiting myself soon enough! Thanks for the compliments!
I remember being a little bit disappointed after reading it, but man…I still think about it a lot years later. Definitely one of the most melancholy things I’ve read but so powerful.
@@ShogunZIlla that is super interesting. It’s amazing how some books are middle of the road on first read but them grow in your memory over time. That’s happened to me loads.
Blankets is the book that got me into graphic novels and showed me that the medium of comics can be much more than the 'standard' Asterix, Spike and Suzie or Billy's Boots.
@@gedovanderzee1224 it’s a great place to start!
So GOAT-ed
Blankets is too sentimental. Not for me.
@@rosswilson8917 I can see that; think a lot of people will be put off by the sentimentality as it is full on.
This book has been sitting on my shelf for the longest time without having me read a word of it yet!
Another great video. Blankets sounds intriguing. I'll add it to the list!
@@abr1556 thank you very much!
This keeps getting pushed back in my to read pile. Need to get onto this. Thanks for another great review Chris
@@paulhills1816 always happens with the popular books! Thank you for the compliments mate!
Grabbed a 2nd hand copy of the hardcover a few months ago, but--as ever--haven't gotten round to reading it yet 😅 As you say, it's on so many lists that I might be worried about overhype (also I have read Habibi, and I think he was a bit overambitious with that one). But your recommendation carries a lot of weight, so I'll put it nearer the top when my tbr pile next topples over 😂
@@daxhalo I get the intimidation with all the reviews I’m the same that’s why I took so long to get round to this. You have to wait till that day you thoughtlessly pick it up and start it before you know what’s happening! Hope you enjoy it when you do get to it.
Dark horse kills us with those deluxes. Berserk, Vinland, hellsing, Trigun, vagabond (not DH but still mad good) … where the hell will I put all this deluxes?! 😂
That looks like quite a haul, even without that illustrated history book 😁! I hope you get to enjoy all this reading and we continue to see more demolition of the TBR pile on a regular basis!
U seen his film, 'The Show'? Watched it many times. Does anyone else see many of the characters as Tarot cards?
@@johnirwin3276 I haven’t see that so will have to look it up!
Thank you for the video. It was yet another perspective on why we collect Absolutes. I believe that the best stories (writing & art) become Absolutes, though not all are sound stories. My first was purchased on a whim at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet for $12.99. It was Superman: For Tomorrow.
@@gnayr1305 thank you for watching! And that is a crazy bargain! 👏✌️
I bought batman who laughs and killing joke and three jokers. Can you recommend some other from dc
Joker stories specifically? Or Batman overall.
@@OffMyShelves batman overall
@@Leo8oo27 I would go for the two classic Miller stories, Batman Year One and Dark Knight Returns.
@ I started with miller Batman books, year one and dark knight returns so they would be my recommendations.
@@OffMyShelves I ordered dark knight returns
Do you feel the absolute edition size really adds a lot more to the reading experience vs the hardcover deluxe edition? Thx!
@@ta5777 I do indeed! But price has to be considered too. The deluxe is a solid format for the price but if you enjoy the book and the art style hen look around for a copy at or below cover price.
Oh, Paul Grist's art horrendous? He's actually one of the most interesting British authors, clear storytelling and great sense of humour.
@@kuzyn_kitaszeski sorry! I have enjoyed his art in other books, but this one wasn’t up my street at all. Glad you love it though!
