The matchup is horrendous to put it bluntly. You have to draw well AND they have to brick. Your best hope of winning is to don minus sparingly so that you can make a Judge play asap. If you don’t play Judge (like me), the matchup is basically unwinnable. I’m still not teching for the matchup though, because even if you do tech for it, I think the odds are still so bad that those techs just aren’t worth it, and will bog down your draws against more relevant matchups, such as katakuri, where Judge is very bad.

I’m glad you brought this up since I didn’t mention it in the video. I think Queen is a decent card in the deck but not necessary for it to succeed. I mainly see it as a tech to let you function better against the mirror and against decks that can don minus a lot, like RP law. Normally those decks will have less don than you, making your Vinsmoke turn into crappy vanillas. So Queen gives you an option to play that still has a useful effect even when you have more don than your opponent. It also helps you draw into your Judge pieces, which is crucial for the mirror. You’ll notice in the video that I don’t run Judge, which I also see mainly as a tech for the mirror and other don minusing decks like RP law. However, I feel that RP law is such a bad matchup that it’s not worth teching for. As for the mirror, if it’s common enough at your locals, then I would definitely advise preparing your list to combat the mirror, which includes playing copies of queen and judge (probably 4 and 2, respectively). The mirror is winnable without judge only if your opponent doesn’t draw their own judge. If they do summon judge, you need to summon your own judge on the next turn to get back to having less don than the opponent, or you’ll get run over. Overall I think the queen + judge variant is a totally valid version of the deck, as it has a better chance of winning the mirror, and judge is also very good against sakazuki and Moria decks (but terrible against aggressive decks like katakuri or yamato). I just went for pure consistency over those tech options.

Yeah tbh I was questioning my own logic on a rewatch. I can imagine a scenario where they block and save the blocker in an attempt to mind game you into swinging at the rested blocker a second time, to bait you away from swinging at their life. So don’t fall for that if it ever comes up. That’s about all I can think of lol. Sorry for the confusion. That being said, ichiji’s ability to turn 6k blockers into 4k blockers is amazing regardless because it basically guarantees that either they either don’t block or you get to clear their blocker off the field, rather than the 6k blocker sticking around another turn.

@@BeepoThiccfor sure. Another situation that has come up for me a few times is this. They’ll play a 6k blocker in the mid game, and I’ll swing 5k at life just to see if they take the free block. If they do, I’ll play Ichiji to reduce the blocker to 4k and swing 7k at 4k to ko the blocker, to make sure I don’t have to worry about it again.
