How I adjust curriculum to meet my child's needs
I am not a Christian nor do I carry their doctrines. I study Yahauh word and try to follow his word and recognize Messiah as a Hebrew who was from the tribe of Levi and Judah. I honestly dont understand how a majority of Christians have to use certain curriculum to teach their children it seems like the bible and everyday discussions in what interests them would be enough. Also, I notice they just keep on getting different ones to replace ones they may disagree with and or not like ect. So why not just use whatever works and maybe even considered secular and use critical thinking skills.
Love the pig!! ❤
An inspiration! You’ve certainly got it together with routines/schedules. Lots of practical takeaways I’m going to start implementing! You put out some very useful content that many other homeschoolers don’t 😊
Are you planning on using Torchlight levels 4 and 5 with your kids at some point?
thank you !! im gluten intolerant and i have the same problem, Tj is over a 30 min drive for us and we are making our first trip today to get me some variety finally! 😂
Thank you for the video! How much information overlap do you find there is between the CKLA and CKHG unit of the same topic? Ex. the Ancient Greece units. I want the units for the history content but I love the flipbook layout of the CKLA. I don't know which unit to do.
You are real as real as they get. No pretentiousness. Thank you for these updates. I will share my goals in another comment. What I love about your channel is you tell it how it is! And no sponsorships/promotion. When I see this on a channel I’m not sure how much they are being transparent. You’re a gem 😊
Adulting is the worst! We need to get our roof repaired this year. As a family goal, I want us to be more conscious of recycling and visiting the recycling center.
I use Google sheets and love it. It's free and it functions just like Excel
Thank you for this!
Looking forward to hearing about how you've turned around the hair loss. I've definitely had the same experience as I've gotten older.
Nice! I’m glad you’re enjoying the MK book and also his video content! And the ranch snow globe came out great!
Try sparketh it's amazing
Thank you for sharing this! One of my goals is to not impulse or urge buy through Amazon. Being really intentional with what I purchase for my home and for homeschooling.
I love these videos. You always inspire me to think more about my intentions! This year I'm also focusing on intentional movement for overall health. My mom also passed away at a relatively young age (61) and with 4 young kids at home and being over 40 I'm always conscious of how fleeting time is. I've also set a lofty reading goal (100 books). We also have a goal of finally building up savings (also single income by choice, and not a giant corporate income) and we have some real work to do to eliminate debt and grow savings. In the current political climate we really want to be set up to help others in any way we can and that isn't possible while drowning in debt. Thanks for sharing your goals!
Thanks for sharing your budget update. It is important to talk about budget. Choosing to homeschool is an investment in our childrens education. We utilize core knowledge as a free resource. It is so nice to have available a free solid program to be able to put funds other places in my homeschool budget!
CK is a great program and like you said I love that it allows me the opportunity to put my money towards other homeschooling expenses.
Knowing the names of the library staff is so true!
Being lotose introlaent makes it difficult, the salt 🧂 is high especially on tuna fish 🐟 I have salt issues my system does not tolerate salt 🧂 or bread 🍞 the wraps I get re’ gluten free, Gluten sensitivity anything with wheat 🍞 I fall asleep within half an hour 😿. The sodium is through the roof these days I remember I can of tuna fish 🐟 used to be 170 I was stunned it went up to 280 sodium I was like Nope 🙅 not going to have my sodium levels go through the roof again twice was enough for me.
Thank you for sharing your Aldi haul. I’m so excited to see they have gluten free bread crumbs ! I would have never known others.
I already went back and bought more 😆
Ive never used the good and the beautiful but am wanting to try their science for little hearts and hands for my upcoming 2nd grader. Do you have thoughts on that? I know what you mean by people promoting the good and the beautiful for money and it saddens me. I am a new homeschool mom and i want the truth about a curriculum. Thanks for your video. Its rare to find truth like this. ❤
I’ve never looked into that specific curriculum. I’ve tried TGATB many times in many different subject areas and it wasn’t a good fit. If your looking for more of a nature based science I have used this in the past seahomeschoolers.com/store/product/magic-forest-academy-spring-bundle-ebook/ I like that they have different seasonal bundles or you can just buy specific units. My kids always enjoyed the activities.
I have a question about using CK. This semester I want to use the Listen & Learn strands with my 4yr old, but looking through the first unit, I see there are trade books needed, so I'm assuming that happens throughout the units. Do you try to order them all from your library? If you cannot, then do you substitute it with like books? Skip that day? I'm not sure how I want to navigate that, as I'm trying to keep my weekly tasks overwhelm to a minimum since I have 4 kids. I'd love to have your input since you've used it longer. Thanks.
The first few units have books that go directly with the lesson but not so much in the later units. I would check the library and hoopla to see if the books were available. If they weren’t I would just find a YT read aloud that had the book. I did swap out a few of the books with ones I already had on my shelf.
@michellegf I didn't even think about checking UA-cam for read alouds. Thank you for offering your suggestions. Your channel has been an amazing resource for us!
Love your video! I wish that there were links to the resources you talked about in the description. I would like to check some of them out! (I'll probably watch the video again so I can write them down and google them!) Thank you for sharing!
Core Knowledge really is phenomenal. We are about to finish all of the ELA listening and learning strands in their kindergarten level and it’s amazing how much my 6 year old and 4.5 year old have picked up and remembered. I tried other curriculum and always end up going back to core knowledge because nothing has topped it as of yet. I love how they incorporate stories and provide a lot of visuals. What I do is pull up the teacher guide and display the flip book on our iPad. I wish more homeschoolers were more open to Core Knowledge. It really is solid and we’ve only done preschool and kindergarten so far. Can’t wait to see what first grade is like. ❤ ETA the guide does an awesome job including prompts to ask questions as you go and so many discussion questions which almost always make the 10 min lesson turn into half and hour but I’m ok with it haha 😂
It really is a great curriculum! We often get into much longer discussions as well, especially in U.S. History this year.
Thank you for another great video! Your kids are so blessed\lucky to have a mom teach them such diverse and open things! Congrats on spreading out in art. Heck i wanna visit your homeschool for a day...haha. i mean that in a very not creeper way. My son is 7 and though we have our struggles i think his year is going overall good. You very much inspired me to dive in to November with everything Native American and my son loved it!!
Thank you! I totally took the compliment in a non creeper way 😃. I actually really appreciate the comment! Homeschooling is hard and it’s nice to get positive affirmations of what I’m doing. I’m glad your finding my channel helpful.
It sounds like she is having a great year!
I can totally relate to the "socialization" for older kids. We've tried out various nature groups and co-ops and they are mostly made up of much younger kids. It's been harder finding girls her own age as we transition from elementary to middle school. Glad you found something for your older daughter!
It’s definitely been a struggle to find opportunities for her to socialize on a regular basis with kids her own age. It seems like homeschooling is popular in the elementary years but starts to dwindle in middle school years. I hope your able to find something.
For friends, have you looked into having your daughter volunteer at your local library? Our volunteer age starts at 12/13. We are considering it.
Yes I have, it’s only available to high school students. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Hello!! Good morning! Thank you for your videos. I watch them as I fold laundry. You are the type of homeschool Mama I hope to find and befriend. You are absolutely rocking it!! Thank you for new ideas on subjects. May your home have many blessings. ❤
Thank you! ❤️
Thanks for another great video Michelle! Wondering if you have plans for literature after you finish 3rd grade CK Listening and Learning? We've been using Lightning Literature grade 1 and 2 for just vocabulary and comprehension questions, but my students aren't very interested in the book selections, so I'm thinking of switching to CK. I don't like to curriculum hop and as a long term planner, not sure what to look at transitioning to after 3rd grade CK. My 8 yo girl also has ADHD, plus mild ASD, so stamina and focus can be an issue as well.
My plan is to try some units from Lit house learning. She won’t be ready for CK 4 next year and Lightning Lit isn’t a good fit for her. I feel like it will be a good introduction to writing as well.
What made you want to do multiplication facts that stick? Isn’t that covered in depth in dimensions?
It’s covered in dimensions, but multiplication facts have to be memorized. Multiplication facts that sticks helps with that.
Where did you get the "math action words" reference sheet, ma'am?
It came in a bundle from Teachers pay teachers. I couldn’t find the exact bundle I have so I just linked the free poster. However if you search TpT “math action words” or “cubes math strategy” both will give options.
We made the gluten free pumpkin ravioli with butter and fresh sage, it was delish! They need to sell the pumpkin ravioli all year long! The cheese one was okay but the gluten free traders pumpkin ravioli is better!
I agree, I thought the pumpkin was better too!
Great video...thanks for the info. You didn't show how to take out the paddle at the bottom after the 2nd stir. Do you have a video 📹 on that?
After the second stir cycle is done I just move the dough to the side and pull out the paddle. The trick is to get it after the last stir cycle on the bread machine, but before the rise cycle begins.
Ok, thank you for the info. & the video. My daughter is GF due her medical condition & we just got our bread maker @michellegf
I paused this video to download a Cubes poster for my kiddo. I really liked how they have taught spelling in the Learning Strands of Core Knowledge. All the different spellings for a sound, how common they are etc.
If she is doing Lightening Literature mostly independently, do you feel like having the Teacher Guide is still helpful or unnecessary?
She has done LL mostly independently since 4th grade. I still help with grammar concepts, end of book reading discussion and whenever she has questions. I also check it daily to make sure she is understanding the lesson. The teacher guide is essential as it has the writing assignments, comprehension question answers and grammar answers.
Thank you! Looking into using it next year for my oldest. Love the channel!
Do you have them use ckla on a laptop or desktop?
The student readers are downloaded on their Amazon fire tablet so they can flip thru the pages. The teacher guide is on my Samsung tablet.
Look into FlavCity’s protein shake powders… I have celiac and use and it’s very super clean ingredients as well
Thanks for the recommendation!
How long do each of your kids spend on math per day? Thanks for this video!
It varies depending on the lesson. My 11 and 8 yr old usually 35 mins - 45 mins. My 5yr old probably 15 mins.
@michellegf thank you! Very helpful!
When you get to AAR4, I’d love to know your thoughts around its usefulness for a fluent reader. I’m curious about the opportunity cost, and if the time spent makes sense. Thanks for continuing to make videos! Happy New Year!!
Thanks for video. I actually have the older first language lessons, and wanted to look into ckla. I have never used it. I’m curious why you choose to not use your ckla or is grammar not included? I have never purchased Michael Clay Thompson. I have an early 2nd grader and a 3rd grader l, and was wondering which you prefer for grammar, spelling, language arts. I am realizing I need to go over rules, because I skipped it since she was such an avid reader. But now am realizing we are lacking. I recently started IEW also. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. We do Dimensions, but she likes math mammoth as well ( so we have both). Do you like facts that stick? My 3rd is used to things coming easy, and today had a mini teary moment due to facts. Thanks
I will definitely update as we use it. I know with my oldest I wish I had done all 4 levels as she now has issues with spelling phonetically because she didn’t learn all the blends and phonetic rules.
@@kellynieves240 CKLA teaches grammar in the skills section. I only use the listening and learning strand as we already use All About Reading for reading instruction, so it is easier to just add in a separate grammar. I also really like how MCT approaches grammar concepts. I do have a video on what I’ve used for ELA for all my kids. It can vary depending on the kiddo. ELA | What I've Used Pre-K -6th Grade ua-cam.com/video/gHLBQhvg-Uk/v-deo.html My 8yr old is using multiplication facts that stick and is flying thru it. Math concepts come very easily for her. She did not however like the practice sheets. So I just switched out the practice sheets to a different layout.
Happy New Year, Michelle 🎉
I love that you’re religious but still teach inclusivity and that you are aware of the need of more peer interaction!! I’m definitely subscribing!! My kiddo is only 3 but we intent to homeschool and I worry about the line between keeping your kids with parent orientation but also giving them their peer relationships. I loved the book Hold On To Your Kids. It explained so much of my teen struggles lol.
It’s been a tough line to figure out that’s for sure! Thanks for the book recommendation 😀📖
It’s wonderful insight Thank you
This video was so helpful for me. I will be adding a preschooler into our school in the coming weeks. Definitely going to try some of your seasoned tips.
I’m glad you found it helpful!
So fun! Such a funny movie! National lampoon's christmas vacation is my favorite and my kiddo loves the home alone movies.
Your suggestions are helpful , thank you ! I’ve had some of the same issues finding a group . The library is a great idea . 👍😊
I’m glad you found them helpful!
My oldest tells me how I ruined my kids childhood because she didn't do elf on the shelf. 😂😂 She's just joking but I just don't have the capacity to remember to move the thing around the house. lol.
I know my limit and the elf is beyond it 😆
That movie is hilarious! Every time we see a frosty, my kids and I start chanting "Free Frosty"😂😂 Love how everything is part of the theme. Very cool. There are so many great Christmas movies! Home Alone is my favorite.
My kids watched home alone for the first time last year and loved it. They want movie night next year to be Home Alone 2
This looked like so much fun!! Thank you for sharing. Gave me ideas for our Christmas vacation. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well!
Agree with many of these! No elf over here. I think I buy my son Christmas pajamas every other year, just because I buy a size up every time, so he's got a year to grow into them. lol
We don’t do elf on the shelf either.
