Balkan Kiss
Bulgaria
Приєднався 8 тра 2023
Vintage meets modern. Crafting, cooking, downshifting in our country house in Bulgaria. Childhood memories and new experiences. A timeless kiss from the Balkans.
#14 Last harvest, walks through nearby fields, yard work, and kalimba playing
Autumn is in full swing, and it's absolutely beautiful. We've had fantastic weather and made the most of it. The pomegranates and walnuts were ready for harvest, along with the last of the apples and a few late pears. The quinces still need a bit more time, but we'll pick them on the next round. We're also preparing our rainwater tank to make the most of the upcoming rainy season.
The yard needed some care, so we took advantage of the great weather to get some work done. We even managed to fire up our makeshift BBQ a couple of times and enjoyed meals cooked over the flame. The highlight, though, was hiking around the nearby lavender fields, which brought us a sense of peace and calm.

Traditional Bulgarian recipe

1. Popara
One of our childhood breakfasts. It dates back hundreds of years. Can be made with either milk or tea. My mother recalls having one made with red wine in the 1940's, though that would be pretty illegal these days, wouldn’t it? 😉
Ingredients:
* tea or milk
* loaf of bread (or rusk)
* white cheese
* butter
* 2 tsp sugar
Bake a loaf of bread. Boil tea or warm milk. Pour in a bowl. Add butter to your tasting and 2 teaspoons of sugar. Crush white cheese and crumble bread on top. Stir gently. Eat immediately.
2. Melitzanosalata-kyopolou Balkan appetizer
We first discovered something very similar at our local gyros spot, and we've been making it ever since. It's not exactly true to either Greek or Bulgarian traditional recipes, but somehow it just hits the perfect sweet spot.
Ingredients:
* 2-3 grilled peppers
* 1 small grilled aubergine
* 2-3 garlic cloves
* 2 tbsp mayonnaise
* 1 tbsp yoghurt
* salt and pepper
Mix mayonnaise and yoghurt in a bowl. Finely chop the peppers, aubergine and garlic. Combine everything and season with salt and pepper.
A quick word of advice: don’t bother buying jarred peppers from the store. They’re nothing like the real deal-seriously, no taste or aroma at all. If you can’t grill over an open fire, try using your oven, or better yet, get yourself a chushkopek, the ingenious Bulgarian invention for roasting peppers. I’ll be sure to share my oven grilling hack in one of the winter episodes. And as for the chushkopek, maybe we’ll do a demo next summer! 😊

As summer comes to an end, our apple trees yielded over 100 kilograms of fruit this year. Unfortunately, most of it went to waste since we couldn’t harvest in time. We did manage to donate what was left to our neighbors, who make apple vinegar, and next year we’re thinking of trying our hand at it too. In the meantime, we had an "aha" moment-the old beer crate could easily be repurposed into a ...
#12 A multi-cultural mix of keks, rakia and birthday piñata
Переглядів 2,7 тис.2 місяці тому
Piñatas are neither traditional nor very popular in Bulgaria. At least, they weren't until recently. But we thought it would be fun to let the kids go wild in the yard. To add a local touch we were lucky to find a very special ingredient from our childhood: sweets called "Caramel MU" and "Lakta"'. They were some of the few we had back then. On the other hand, if there's one thing from the Balka...
#11 Jungle boogie continues, our own organic fruits and granny's buhti
Переглядів 1,8 тис.3 місяці тому
Unlike last year, this year our unattended orchard produced fruit that we could finally taste. We’ve got early pears, cherries, sour cherries, and a few varieties of plums. There should also be figs, apples, quinces, walnuts, and a few others later on. In the meantime, we continue our fight with the 30-year-old ivy that has spread all over. So far, we have found six different pots underneath. -...
#10 A new friend, a cosy home feeling and three recipes
Переглядів 1394 місяці тому
While we were painting our exterior walls, a friendly stray cat appeared. We called her Kometa. Kometa kept us company night and day, even fought off another big male off the yard. But besides our new buddy and beautiful walls, it is the touches on the inside we keep adding that make the house feel like a cosy home. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Traditional Bulgarian recipe - ...
#9 One whole year in our Bulgarian country house, second floor completed
Переглядів 1,7 тис.5 місяців тому
In the eve of our first year, we shall call second floor finished, furnished and completely habitable! We have spent our first few nights in comfort during Easter holidays and without any superficial modesty, it's simply amazing. In this episode, besides hammers clanking and power tools whirring, brace for slightly unhealthy, but super delicious traditional breakfast, meat dish and unorthodox e...

#7 Mostly finishing second floor and baking traditional Bulgarian banitsa
Переглядів 11411 місяців тому
Our plan is to finish second floor by the end of the year and we are pushing forward. With floors and stairs leveled and ready for flooring (which was not extensively filmed), we primed and painted walls and ceilings and stacked up laminate packs, so they can settle down in the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile, we bought a pair of socialist vintage wooden lounge chairs that needed some restorati...
#6 Autumn is here
Переглядів 102Рік тому
With cold season approaching, we are trying to do as much as we can to our second floor. The previous owners never got to finish for 35 years. Woodwork has been entirely replaced, walls are now plastered (we hired a team for this, it was simply way too much for us to do; still they left some patches for us to have fun) and we are doing the last tough piece - the floors. We used 400 kilograms of...
#5 Crafts, art and more traditional Bulgarian dishes
Переглядів 67Рік тому
With autumn approaching, we are finally enjoying some fruits from our orchard and it's one hell of a feeling. As yard overhaul continues, so does our interior work. We installed the shower and light fixtures, completely rewired second floor, but it's the little touches that make you feel at home. So we added some of our favorite artworks, polished our silverware with... toothpaste, and being cr...
#4 Finishing kitchen, adding touches, traditional pottery
Переглядів 74Рік тому
While still trying to get our overgrown yard in some basic shape, heat prevents us from actively working on it. So we took on our kitchen and living room instead. Last shelves are now mounted. 40 year old fridge died and had to be replaced in the meantime. Speaking of good old times, we had the privilege to inherit some fantastic traditional Bulgarian pottery in the house. Which we plan to use ...
#3 Taking on the jungle in our yard
Переглядів 61Рік тому
While knocking off every single fruit from the trees, heavy rains also turned our yard into а jungle in less than a month. There is a lot to be dealt with - 30-year old ivy, spreading all around the house and choking the vines (in which evidently also lives a grass snake we now call Smookey), huge wild rose bushes that block pathways, a couple of dead trees and a whole Decare of meter-tall weed...
#2 Grilling a lot of meatballs and red peppers in the yard
Переглядів 82Рік тому
It seems our families were equally excited about the house. They rushed to clean up the yard and give us a helping hand here and there. Work in the countryside can be exhausting, but very satisfying. Especially when at the end of the work day, delicious Balkan meatballs are grilled and waiting for you. As you will see the BBQ was crafted from bricks in about a minute. And the best part about it...
#1 We finally bought a country house in Bulgaria (after 8 years)
