I'm starting a new playlist comprising the random tracks that I've built up in my hard drive! No videos or anything fancy like that, just some tunes to share with anybody looking for some new-to-them music! Here's one called "Chaotic Burden". I was mainly chasing a crunchy bass tone here that cuts through the mix - less so focused on the technical aspects. Thanks for listening!

I snagged a used Warwick Rockbass Alien 5 Deluxe Thinline in kind of a beat-up state from Guitar Center earlier this year, and it's been a neat practice tool to have around! There's a few tone samples here, but I wanted to explain why this acoustic bass has been useful, overcoming some of my prior misconceptions about this class of instruments. #warwickbass

Let's slap a little bit on the Spector Euro5 LT - PJ config! I'm digging the crispy, yet thick, tone you can get out of this beast when you really dig in. I'm using a split compression-distortion chain on a Quad Cortex, with D'Addario NYXL 125-45 strings. It's a pretty simple rig! #metalbass #spectorbass #daddario

Warwick tonal signature has always been limited to my ear... it's great to play on in person and it is a high quality instrument but the sound profile in recording seems to have less range. It works well for metal music where you add distortion but when compared to the Spector it falls short in tonality. I also really like the the thickness of the Spector neck, the Doug Wimbish signature model has a thinner neck however.

    • @gsimongear

Yeah! I don't know what it is. On paper, the specs aren't mind-blowing for a lot of the models, but when you play them, they just feel and sound "right". My only growing challenge with Warwicks is that they lean on the heavy side. Thanks for watching!

@@gsimongear I have never anchored my thumb so I didn't encounter an issue with the Steinberger ergonomics. The guy I bought it from actually installed a little thumb rest on it because of what you describe. Might help you out. Id probably mod your preamp with mec, EMG, or darkglass and it'll bring that bass to life. The pickups sound like there's potential but it's not being brought to it's full capacity. Also I remember on another video you talking about a tone capsule in one of your Warwicks. Thanks for the review. Here's an idea that I don't think anyone has done yet or at least not that I can find. I have a Lag Hy-vibe acoustic guitar, it creates effects through a transducer connected to the body which essentially turns the body of the guitar into a speaker through vibration. Sounds really good! What if an acoustic bass implemented the same concept but with a larger driver that could deliver low end and volume? Sure, it might take more power and require keeping a 20v built in battery charged; But I know a lot of bassists that wouldn't mind having some low end and volume in an acoustic jam session or even for practice.

    • @gsimongear

Thank you! Yes, the newer Dimension 5 models use 45's (6-string pickups). This made sure that the edges of the pickup properly captured the low and high string - when regular 5-string pickups are slanted, they're not long enough to span the range of the strings.
