Lady Gouldian color combination
Lady Gouldian finches preening their feathers. Lovely color combination of the green back and yellow back normal gouldian finches. My favorite is the Male Red head, white chested, green back which reminds me of Christmas.

I also put a small solar water bubbler that is always running during the day and a garden drip system set for 10 minutes. I believed that the birds like the water movements and it makes them go.

    Question: How safe is it to (re) use this cleaned seed? Assuming I don't see any sines of webby bugs and it looks clean is it safe? How long after use can I keep it before cleaning if I do by batch? Bacteria / Virus spreading issues? I built the great working funnel but I want to make sure for the sake of my finches. Cheers and thank you for your informative video.

      Hi Dave73, I have been using this seed cleaning process for several years now and I don't see any negative results and I believed that it cleans the seeds much better because when I clean up the vacuum can I see all the dust and bird poop after I use the strainer. My rule of thumb is to do recycle the seeds a couple of times and after that if there are more seeds that they don't consume I feed it the wild birds in my yard. By the way, I've never had an issue having webby bugs in my bird feeder. I always check it every morning. I hope this answers your questions and let me know if you need more information.

      Hi Adriano, this is one of the Lady Gouldians health issues. There are several breeders said that it's iron deficiency, mites infestation, territorial issues where males are fighting and usually they will pull the head feathers of other males or even females, gouldians also lose their head feathers during molt season and eventually be replaced with new feathers. I hope I've provided you with good feedback.

      Charcoal is essential and a good mineral. They do consume these in the wild as part of their diet. Another thing that I will try is red clay, I see my finches nibble on the slump stone inside the aviary and I'm not possible what mineral they are trying to get out of it.

    Beautiful birds! Where do you get that much eggshell?

    • @alex8426
      @alex8426 6 років тому

      HI Parker Benz, I go to McDonalds or Jack N Box and talk to supervisor or manager if I could have the eggshells that they will discard after breakfast hours. Once I have them, I will wash them as much as I can and then boil it for several minutes. When it's summer time, I will have them outside to dry or put them in a large tray and put it in an oven until it dries. Once it cools down, I will grind it by using a portable food processor until it's small enough for the birds to eat. BTW, we also save our eggshells whenever we eat eggs and save them in the freezer until it's time to make a batch.

    • @parkerbenz
      @parkerbenz 6 років тому

      Alex Castillo thanks for the advice! I think my gouldians like larger pieces of eggshell but I cant tell to be sure.

    • @alex8426
      @alex8426 6 років тому

      I used to give my birds big pieces too when I only have a few pairs, not that I have a lot of birds, I find it easier for them to eat small pieces that they don't have to fight for the same piece. If you have time, check out my website, I tried to share my experience from several years of having them as a hobby. The website is mygouldianfinches.com

    • @parkerbenz

      Woah cool website!!! How many gouldians would you say you have? What state do you live in? I recently was given 8 mated pairs and 14 single gouldian finches from a former hobby breeder that didnt have the energy to care for all the birds anymore.

    • @alex8426
      @alex8426 6 років тому

      I believed I have more than 200 or 250 and they are all in an outdoor flight aviary. I'm from Southern California. I think you have enough to start. Good luck with your birds and don't worry, they are easy birds to take care of.
