Take on game I've played: GW2. I agree with your assessment overall. Really nice that if you are into PvP you can queue up and be scaled up in level and have all of your abilities. There is no need to grind or level and it's always an even playing field. So why don't I continue to play it? For me, the combat feels decent enough, but I just HATE the weapon system and how it determines what abilities you have access to. I really can't stand that I can't alter what ability each spell is on the action bar like I can in every other MMORPG; this is how you manage playing different games or classes by having the same types of abilities on the same keybind. Ex: I have one keybind that is where I ALWAYS place a stun, so when I boot up GW2 and play I end up hitting that button because of muscle memory. Why can't I place them where I want? It's such a small thing, but it completely ruins my experience playing. Even worse, they aren't consistent from weapon to weapon on the same class! So with one weapon a leap ability maybe bound to "2" but swapping weapons it is on "3." This was a terrible decision that ensures I will never play it, and it is pretty much the ONLY reason I don't. I just can't get past it, and there is no feasible reason for it to be this way.

Take on game I've played: Warhammer Online. You are spot on in your assessment, and right to bring up Return of Reckoning. It runs well and fixes most of the big problems the game had. Besides WoW it is the other MMORPG I want to boot up the most. Another huge con is that the dungeons and PvE content in general is lackluster... which is such a shame considering they were the first to implement features like "public quests" that were well ahead of their time. It's great to have an MMORPG focused on PvP, but if you want a large community the PvE content would have to be brought up to snuff. With that said, having the combat be built for PvP from the start is gamechanging; just the idea of tanks having a role in PvP and how they operate is the best the genre has EVER seen. The fact that healers use an energy system and have cheap spells they can cast while moving is refreshing. PvP combat is 9/10 and it's a shame they didn't get to develop this further. This game is STILL worth your time to play today.

I remember making a Tauren Hunter, and REALLY wanting an Owl when I got high enough to tame pets. I looked it up, and luckily there was really low level ones that I could tame!.... in Teldrassil past the city of Darnassus. So off on a quest I went, dying over and over again until I could get on the boat and then past the city. Some of the ridiculous self directed play is also the best memories. Probably the funniest was when my brother (who also played Hunter) kited an elite green dragon all the way from the top of Feralas into Orgrimmar! Haha, he was the reason they had to change the distance at which certain mobs reset. It rampaged through the front of the city since guards and players kept attacking it, keeping it at combat and preventing it from running back.

idk if u ever experienced TERA, sadly it is alive any on consoles. Rift,Tera, ESO was my secondarys while i got bored of wow totally. just google, i think they already answered the skyrim co-op why didnt come years ago. Wildstar is R.I.P already.

My WoW adventure was quite the adventure! I lived in Belgium at the time and had made friends from Canada and the US through other games. As they were joining WoW I needed to get myself access to the US WoW version and back at the time, you couldn't just easily find different game versions for different continents... So I sent through postal mail money so that my friend could buy the game and send it to me also through mail. The joy it was to receive the game from a friend in Canada, opening the package and seeing how impactful WoW game box was. Installing the game with I don't even remember how many CD Roms then finally logging in. This game was precious. I also had a similar feeling with Lineage 2 but only in the very start of the game. After that WoW won clearly. I feel fortunate to have been born around that time to experience this game in my early teenage years.

Everyday there's a new "WoW killer" let's be honest. It's true sure, nobody has *killed* the game, not even the Blizzard Gods themselves after facing lawsuit after lawsuit during COVID, it has a massive fanbase and a huge financial backing now as well. I will defend one game though! Lord of the Rings Online is what I'm currently playing while I take my break from WoW, and what I usually play on breaks. Graphics don't make a game because if they did nobody would play Minecraft but look what happened there, sold for $1B, and the combat in lotro is really no better or worse, one's just more visually appealing. I will agree the UI is god awful. Almost nobody that I know uses that swift travel option you mentioned despite it being an option because people highly stress the game is about "taking it slow". It's like the most horizontal-vertical progression game I've seen because many don't make it to level cap or they're on their 19423rd alt, so there's a lot of people spread across all content. At the tail end of DF I almost wound up doing some mythic raiding with others that played some of the hardest tiers of lotro content still lol, I was known as the lotro guy. I love the content though as always!

Modern Warefare 2 was our jam. Had 7 of us play it each night for 6 months or more straight until we all went over to WoW.

when these games came out they were worse than wow but now and really for the last 13 years i would rather play play these games than wow (at least those that have not been shutdown or came out more recently )

We use to play this split screen as a drinking game with 2 tvs in the same room. Every death was a drink. We got so good at it though. Especially my brother and I in tanks.

They might have taken the war out of warcraft, but battlefield is bringing back the battle

Co-op Skyrim only needs to have the enemies do massive damage and it’s good to go. If it’s multiplayer make an absolute requirement to have multiple players to do things.

Years ago Rift was my number 1 (the game population died). But now for me any game is a wow killer, because now wow has too much lineal story and allways mandatory campaigns, too much drama with all leaders npc (jaina, anduin, etc) The beautiful optional zone exploration, and tons of simple quests of classic wow were gone years ago

Only care about gear in so much as it helps me solo older content for mounts. Which is also the main reason I started doing delves since there's a mount involved. But after playing a ton of 'em now I can say it's one of the best experiences I've had in wow in a long time. It feels like I can finally access that kind of content that is basically gated from me in mythics, since I just don't have the time it'll take to grind up and trudge through the pain and suffering of pugging them. No, screw that. Give me more delving and the like please.

Good list. I think a lot of these MMOs were deluded. Over the last two years I've been playing MMOs on the side just to beat their main storyline then quit. A lot of them have very fun main storylines but that doesn't require thousands of hours to play in them. Using a modern example, going for say the first ark in Lost Ark is a LOT of fun and I'm sure the others would be too but that's too much of a time commitment. So these studios thought their ideas were so original that it requires 5000 hours to beat the game. It's just foolish and full of hubris. Some major IPs I understand trying, Star Wars, LotR, even Conan, but for the MMOs with a unique universe and no unique mechanics, why? That's why they failed.

I'm unable to play GW2 anymore, but I still think it's the best MMO out there to this day. WoW was great. I had good times in there. But it's no longer what it used to be. About Wildstar. It's probably one of the greatest Healing mecanics I've been able to play in a game. My second closest is Guild Wars 1. The fact that I had to aim my healing spells was awesome. The problem I had with WS is that I leveled exclusively through PvP and went full healer. At some point, the leveling curve seemed to go in the negative for me and I lost interest. I tried to go PvE to see if it was faster. But my PvP healer gear didn't cut the deal. So I quit.

Me and my wife have been playing wow almost 17 years. I used to raid hardcore, but now I'm in my 50's and not interested in being try-hard and sweaty anymore. Me and mine have been doing delves and follower dungeons together and been having a blast. Doing the follower dungeons made me familiar enough with them to put my toe back in to the LFG game and did my 4 weeklys for that. I think Delves are great for the game. Very good review. /liked

First time I played an Alliance character (started out horde with family, played Horde for years) I walked into SW and kept feeling like they KNEW I was secretly Horde. Like, a spy. SW was gorgeous but I was definitely nervous walking past guards 😂

the original game was awesome burning crusade and bitch king were ok but also did a lot of things wrong then i quit when i saw the pre patch for crapaclysm

i have felt the same way about bethesda games as mmo...playing morrowind back in the day, i always wished i could play with a few friends. game of the year edition with multiple expansions added it was a huge game and there was always more to do. i used to talk to a friend on the phone and we would play in similar areas, figure out puzzles, and just have a good time...but would have been better in a co-op version of some sort. hell, even fable would have been cool as a multiplayer

OMG. "8 ibuprofen later" had me laughing my ass off. Child of the 70's here so I am feeling you. Also, I just started playing Ret Pally this expansion (Light Frged Draenei) and I love her. For the majority of my almost 17 years of WoW I have been a hunter and you are 100% right about them. Find the prettiest, most unique pets, and then stuff them in the stable because they don't have the right buffs. Every so often I feel guilty about it, but not enough to nerf myself while questing. :)

When you talk about the lore for Orcs in Warcraft, you're missing a huge detail .... Thrall in Warcraft 3 made a new Horde that didn't focus on Orcs pillaging, raping, and conquering. The Orcs used to live in peace with the Draenei until Guldan with the Legion's influence turned them against them. So no ... the Horde and/or the Orcs were never "conquering" or "bloodlust" beasts. Sure you can say that the remnants of the Horde now in Azeroth would have a bit of it left, but the point of Garosh's father killing Mannoroth was to free them from this. And this happened in Warcraft 2 lore. So again, I don't know where you are taking the idea that the Horde in Warcraft, especially in Vanilla were war-mongering. I mean the Tauren were fleeing the Centaurs, Thrall was trying to unite the Orcs together under a new Horde, the trolls were fleeing civil/genocidal war from STV, and the Undead were also escaping persecution. Its why the Horde theme cliqued, as they were all the outcasts forming a band together to fight against those that had ill will for them. So you're either misremembering or being extremely ignorant of what the idea of the new Horde meant at the end of Warcraft 3 and Vanilla WoW.

Wildstar got done so dirty. their downfall was not having an auto attack for the basic attack. you had to have 1000 fingers to play efficiently. Loved the art style and how each class was pretty standalone even a healer could play normally. the raids though jesussssssss

i actually still play the public server for warhammer online lol its got a small population but it makes questing a bit less stressful when someones not ganking you mid quest

for the life of me i can never play any other mmo beside wow ....

SWTOR at launch and for the first 2 expacs put wow in the dumpster. The dungeons were better, the raids were soooo much better. I will agree the world design did not feel as good as wow, but everything else was better than WOW. Also I noticed you didn't put the true WoW killer on this list. FF14 has now beaten wow in sales and monthly subs for about three years now.

nothing beats world of warcraft, i started playing wow when i was 13 and tried a few other MMO's over the years, nothing came close to wow for me. wow has been my only MMO for 18 years now.

It's sad how many terrible games there are for a genre that could be the most awesome. Most MMOs turn out so unpolished and uninteresting they feel forever stuck in alpha testing.
