I have Quoll writer but i agree, it is a little clunky, and im still not sure how to properly create sections, such as notes etc i honestly use it for things that im discovedy writing because it doesnt have the "serious" look of Word.
Thank you for an honest and educative review of Wavemaker. It is really helpful, especially now that it is time to participate in NaNoWriMo.
Thank you for an informative and detailed run-through, Enia. I am looking for a tool, and this may just fit the bill.
I'm so glad I found your channel!!! ❤
Thank you :)
Now, this is version 0.16.1 - In software development terms, that means this particular piece of software has not reached stability yet, otherwise it'd already reached version 1.0 or above. But for all I care, I have installed the latest git version on my Linux Fedora station, added a custom launcher and everything works just fine.
Great video. Thanks! So disappointed to learn that Papyrus is not supported on iPAD.
"6 is a secret no one knows and they desperately don’t want anyone to know about." ;)
AAAH! Enia! I need your help... I've been watching a few of your videos now, and I can't seem to find a free software that can help me. I have written two novels, and working on my third one now. The issue is, there is a LOT of artwork that goes along with the novels. And my book review team and I have decided that the artwork should be included in the book wherever the scenes take place. So I need a software that will let me drag and drop images from my PC and scale them properly with the page. The team and I have been using Google Docs so far, and it's not going well.
I skipped around in the video to try and find a software that would allow me to add pictures and scale them. Sadly, I didn't see any mention of that here at all. Of these free softwares, or others that you may know, which one would be the best for making an illustrated novel? I have multiple images per chapter in my novel, & I need a tool to let me add those images & scale them properly.
Have you looked at FocusWriter? I've been looking for the simplest available and that seems close to it.
I'm an old dude, miss my quill pen, and I've listened to a lot of reviews about a lot of writing software and yours was the best. Danke.
This is such an amazing tool, like you have to be really patient when working with this, but the end result is amazing. I saw a review of someone recommending Wavemaker since it's a free tool. Can't say I am not satisfied. Because this is the best tool so far. Except for the mindmapping function which is kinda annoying. I saw your video and was like let's give this tool a try and you know what I am so glad I did because I am so happy that now I can make use of this tool for my story in a much better way. Thank you so much again.
I just discovered your videos and wanted to say that your manga wall is awesome!
Thank you
It looks like the last update was in 2017 (On the about it says 2015-2020) so it looks like it was abandoned.
For a different approach check Causality
Thank you, i'll take a look.
I prefer to buy a reasonably priced software package to using free software. At least some company has an interest in protecting the integrity of its product.
I really enjoyed your video. Thanks. Hope you are having a great day and writing hard ;-)
Thankyou so much the video was very helpful
Can you please make a specific small duration video on these layout like footer and page number. I really didn't get these settings layouts
hey just want to say thank you! i just stumbled across your channel recently and really like and appreciate all of the things you share and the work you put into it. you offer great examples and have helped positively shift my perspective on story writing quite a bit!
First of all: Thank you for the overview, you gave me some good inspiration how to use this software. It's a pity that it doesn't seem to run flawlessly on windows. I run it on Debian Linux, installed it via the package manager and until now I had no problems what so ever.
Hello enia. I'd like to ask you if you have any tip on powerful protagonists? On characters that start very powerful, more precisely. Thank you.
Thank you for uploading again! I recently picked up writing after a years long break and I just discovered you! I had no idea how much I needed your channel and all the information you have made on writing and creating. Going through the exercises and methods along with you in my own projects helped me immensely, and it's only been a few days since first watching your videos. I really like your straight forward approach and the overall way you explain and break down these processes. Your insights about not just the theory but also how it works in practice is so helpful! To actually be able to SEE you apply all this knowledge in your own novel is such a good way of presenting new information. Thank you once again, I appreciate your work so very much!
It's really nice to know that me trying to figure out how to write my story is also helpful to others. Thank you for your support and encouragement! 😊
Great video and really great introduction to the application. There are a couple of things I would like to say, though. The "sharing site" that you mentioned is actually a developer platform where (mostly) free software developers create, store, manage and share their code. The unknown source alert is a Windows/Antivirus issue which falsely flags things which it "thinks" is dangerous. For posterity sake, this is usually a false positive because FOSS code are usually very safe, infact more safe than usual proprietary ones. FOSS software which are usually developed by single or very few developers share their application on Github. They do not have large company funding their applications. So please do not think the application is not safe to use, it is just the issue of how Windows handles these. Your other user experience issues are very genuine. The installation process can be streamlined especially for the windows OS because users there are more accustomed to click and install things.
Thank you for this explanation :) I hope it's okay that I pin your comment, so this part is visible for others too.
@@eniawrites Sure, No problem. Looking forward to your other instructional videos. Great work.
This was great. I liked the idea of tracking those important questions in your Outline. I have a few other outline "templates" that I am considering as I get back into writing, and this style of questioning will be something interesting and useful to add.
thank you! this video was super clear and to-the-point. ahem time for me to get a google docs upgrade….
Hey there. I just finished reading Agatha Christie's "And there were none" and I must say that it is a great example of what Sanderson calls promise, progress, payoff. You should take a look as it is considered her best book.
Welcome back.
I am writing a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Mystery. I reveal the initial mystery subtly throughout the first act (it's all in a 3-act story structure) as I focus more on world-building and character development. My Main Character initially isn't concerned with what's happening around her despite it reaching critical levels of danger. She is way more focused on her life goal of reaching the City of Earth (a literal City in space in Earth's orbit), where she will begin her dream of joining Space Corp, starting off as a Cadet at the Space Corp Academy. In the background, the world is in upheaval from a Solar Event that happened earlier that morning, resulting in unheard-of things in the 26th Century: blackouts, earthquakes, and odd (even dangerous) behavior in AI-powered technology. At the same time, social unrest taking place out in the streets protesting Space Corp-which has been pummeled by scandal after scandal-begins to have major political implications for the organization. In the Second Act, officially as a Cadet, my MC begins to unravel a conspiracy involving her late parents, who were officers in Space Corp. All her life, she knew them to be heroes, but there is some doubt as she finds classified information, which she can easily access because AI-powered bioscanners, *which controls all forms authentication,* returns her bioscan results as her late mother, giving her access to very classified data. This leads the MC down a rabbit hole of fact-seeking, which paints a picture that shatters her worldview, creating even more mystery and tension. She discovers her parents, just before dying in an incident at Titan Station at Saturn, were part of a very top-secret project called the *Eden Protocol.* It becomes her new goal to find out what this is, as it appears that everyone who has worked on this project, such as her parents, has been killed. By the third act, the big reveals are made, and the great conspiracy theory becomes a reality. The Eden Protocol becomes active, and the meaning of life for all of humanity changes...permanently.
I loved how you brought up the source for your tool Singular Plot Action, I will definitely be reading up on Poetics of Aristotle! & your summary is spot-on, in order to make the plot cohesive there has to be an achievable(and achieved!) goal, & that's what we as writers can hope to build up to :) thanks for this!
I love your channel! ❤❤❤
Thank you 😁
thanks alot. now i can dive deep into the world of writing.
Thanks for taking the time to do such a thorough review. I have known about Manuskript for a while and I learnt some new things through watching your clip. I'm sorry you had running issues in Windows - I've found that some other Linux-generated software has similar behaviour - DarkTable (RAW editing for images), so it could be something that might not be resolved for some time. I note that it's almost a year since you released this clip, and given this particular software is still in development, perhaps some new features have been added and some issue overcome. My biggest reservation about using it is that if I am including physical features for my characters - height, weight, age, etc., - then I need to create new headings for each in the relevant page, which can get tedious. I'd much prefer it if creating a feature was immediately included in the relevant page for all other characters.
Thank you for the review, very thorough yet not one wasted word- super helpful!
Github is the standard repository for programmers. Practically all working software developers use it. It's normal within the open source community to distribute software this way.
I think "not secure" means the website uses http instead of https. Meaning the network communication is not encrypted. That's all.
True
I'm curious - which one do you use as your primary writing program?
As my primary one I'm using Papyrus author right now but I'm using wavemaker for plotting or brainstorming because it is more visual.
Thanks for the review. I suspect this program runs more comfortably on Linux than on Windows. I have it running on Linux without issue and chose it because I was looking for an alternative to Scrivener. I can get Scrivener running in Linux but only through Wine. Manuskript is Scrivener-ish.
One question which might be seem weird but I have to ask: are you an INTP?
I like it. You did a good job outlining and incorporating elements of a good opening and touched on what was needed in the revision. And you are right; it could use a bit more dialog, subtext, and free indirect speech. For example, what's one way to show/imply that Alex has no idea what to do? The host could ask him why he's not writing the story down, or his interaction with the senior investigator could show Alex forgot to do an integral part of his investigation. In old pulp novels, they did this by showing something like a young cop who forgets to rope off a crime scene or a new doctor forgetting to run a specific test and getting lectured by senior coworkers. It's a good way to anchor readers in a scene. Anyway, thanks for the video!
Joplin is the true king when it comes to writing I mean you can throw everything at it and this also plugins that you could add to it to add a lot of the features that has been mentioned here and more. Just Joplin is also free and open source unbelievable a great piece of software once you understand how they really use it.
Hope the writing is going well. I kinda mashed both worlds, UA-cam and fiction, and made a (video book?)audio book. Let me know what you think ua-cam.com/video/6jk_umE7QNU/v-deo.htmlsi=vNYs7x_Xh0utEjFS
I was looking for something more stable and easier to use for a new guy than Manuskript and this seems to be it. Thank you for your in depth review, super useful and informative.
Wait why would you be suspicious about open source being legit? If anything, it should be the other way around :)
A lot of people keep commenting this, which I get because I was not clear in the video about it. I'm not suspicious about open source software. I was unsure whether the website where to download this software is legit because of the way it looked. 😁
Thank you for a very in depth review, it's very interesting and very useful. What would you recommend instead of Manuskript then? Preferably free?
I love the long format videos, specially when you show your own writing. I always come back to these to keep me company while writing lol. I miss your updates! Hope you're doing well
Yes I'm doing well. Needed some time to organize myself better so I can keep up with a more regular update. I should be back to uploading and writing soon. Thank you for sticking around all this time 😁
Shame it's a subscription model to use it beyond the free restriction model. I'll stick with Scrivener.
I tried everything including Dabble. I loved Dabble's Plotting Information Grid that automatically links to your manuscript so that you can refer to it as you write. It's like JKR's Excel-like spreadsheet were she made her own plot grid to follow her Potter novels. Only Dabble's Plot Grid is merely for information. It would have been nice to click in any part of the Plot Grid and begin writing from there, but this is not possible. As a writer this kind of thing was the functionality I was looking for and out of your entire list I never found it. LivingWriter allows you to write from their plot grid and so does Novel Factory. Only I found there were too many clicks to get to do what I wanted to do and both of these were not as straight forward as I needed them to be so as to illuminate distractions when trying to work quickly and clearly, and none of the writing software out there gave me a clear Birdseye View of my novel. That is why I moved over to NovelPad; because it does everything I need it to do and then some. I can write from any scene, character or plot card and I can link everything together as I so wish and color code and tag to my hearts content where I can see my entire novel clearly illuminating that feeling of getting overwhelmed by very long documents. Lastly, the new updated Wavemaker and YWriter which were both mentioned a few times in other posts are absolutely awesome free writing apps that do much to assist writers by the way, but for my needs - as an author that writes the way I do with the needs I have - NovelPad just does it for me. My only wish with NovelPad is that Christian from NovelPad adds SCENES to the Insights Sort Feature so that I can sort and write from their Insights SCENES by PLOT cards which will help me that much more and which would give NovelPad Dabble's awesome plotting information functionality with the added benefit of actually being able to write directly from the scenes and plot cards which is something Dabble just can't do right now. I am eagerly waiting for NovelPad to add this one extra feature as it will enhance NovelPad's Plotting functionality greatly and it will be of much assistance, I'm sure, to many writers currently using NovelPad.
I love you video! Thank you!! ❤ I have a question (I don't see the answer in the official website). How to access to the Appears in Chapters section? I don't understand and I need it to find my characters. I have a lot of them and I miss. Thank you!!
Nice review. I'm working with Quoll as I watch this. A couple notes: • You can (re) order your lists (eg Character) by click and dragging • When adding an ASSET, Quoll demands that you associate it with an icon (not sure if it needs to be a unique icon, but no icon templates seem to be included in the app). This is a wee bit frustrating and time consuming.
