    What are the symptoms leading up to this issue? I may be in a similar situation. Getting balls deep in my engine lately.

    Oh yeah, fun stuff. Try the mercedes ones with the star shape 17mm. Some company actually came out with a dedicated lug socket, just for that specific lug application. I think the brand was AST. I got in the habit of turning my impact gun down to lowest setting, when reinstalling, then i hand torque my lugs. Cant promise the next person taking the wheels off will have the same discipline, but oh well. 😂. I also like using torque sticks when refastening with ½" impact. There are some cheap technicians that wont entertain buying those. Heck, they probably are sliding by, using standard sockets on metric lugs for all i know 😂

      Those do suck but at least they are still hard bolts that don't damage by just existing in the heat. These have a weak shell on the bolt head so they can have chrome on it but it tends to expand and is super easy to damage. So once they expand you get ones that get stuck in the socket or won't even let it fit on anymore and if they have any damage or you use a slightly bigger socket to compensate they shred. The pitch of 1.25 sucks and that combined with being wheel bolts makes them rare to find especially in Arkansas of all places, but the real problem is that shitty chrome shell. GM even does it to regular lug nuts. I've had a Malibu with the same issue. One of the lug nuts turned into a jagged circle before I finally used an extractor on it.

    • @wesleysmith249
      @wesleysmith249 23 дні тому

      Also, here's the really weird part. Even the Mercedes ones aren't rare. Most of them are a 1.5 thread pitch. This is a 1.25 thread pitch. That is insanely rare for a wheel bolt and I have no idea why they chose that but it's what makes these so hard and expensive to replace. If I could have bought them as cheaply and easily as most lug nuts and wheel bolts I wouldn't have made this video or complained. They made this thing incredibly stupid for no reason from head to end.

    • @wesleysmith249
      @wesleysmith249 23 дні тому

      Because of the combination of wheel bolt and 1.25 thread pitch your choices are: Buy online and wait for shipping Spend 100-200 dollars in town if you need to replace them all.

    • @wesleysmith249

      Tried, they really layered these on. The Dremel was getting to the point of cutting the real metal and yet the cover still wouldn't budge despite being half cut through.

    Get the right socket

    • @wesleysmith249
      @wesleysmith249 Місяць тому

      I have the right socket. Maybe actually work on a car with the kind of lug nuts or wheel bolts where the material expands and no longer fits the socket so you'll understand the real problem instead of just making yourself look stupid with comments like this. Here's a clue, if it was the wrong size socket I would have had a problem with all the wheel bolts and not just the ones that had already expanded or been damaged by someone else. But I guess the ones that fit my "wrong socket" had magically shrunk huh?

    This worked for me and my 2009 TSI MKV GTI. Was a bit of a pain to get it out, but in the end i used a breaker bar and a 13 Mill crecent wrench. wish i would had me a swival bit or ratchet. I did have to move the turbo muffler out the way, i can't wait till I'm rich enough to afford to remove that dumb tube.

    Put some tape for your customer in the meantime. Dont let it run just with thag hole itll run weird. Wrap it with tape and then until they get the new part, that can hold them off.

    It's pretty easy to identify which hub assembly is failing. At around 30 to 40 mph on a nice straight away with no traffic. Gently swerve left to right to left to right and follow the body roll. When you swerve to the left, it pushes the inerta of the vehicle to the right which puts a load on the bearings... If the noise gets louder, it's definitely a sign that it's the side you're having the issue. If it gets quieter it's the other side. If you brake and the inerta forward causes it to get louder, or you can feel it more, It's in the front. If it gets quiet it's in the rear.

    • @tylerbeard4092
      @tylerbeard4092 Рік тому

      Mk7 is easier because the bolts are facing you instead of sideways. But everything else is basically the same. Release the tension, move the belt off the alternator , move a coolant hose out of the way. Remove electrical connector. Loosen two bottom bolts and remove them. Loosen two top bolts and remove them.

    More tips for getting the alternator out: 1. Remove the oil pressure switch for extra clearance (right below oil filter) 2. If you’re having a hard time accessing the bottom two alternator bolts; remove the intercooler fan. It’s (4) screws and a plug, then it will drop out of the bottom.

    Some advice for everyone! My brother has a mk5, and I have a mk6 (He has a late mk5, so it’s the same process). If you put the car on some ramps the bottom bolts might be easier to gain access to!

    • @DifferentColt
      @DifferentColt 3 роки тому

      I say might because I didn’t have a long enough handle on my socket wrench :/

    • @wesleysmith249
      @wesleysmith249 3 роки тому

      The best solution is really just a small 1/4 inch ratchet so it fits, reaching up from the bottom is a long enough reach to make it more a struggle than an advantage

    Thanks for this, I tried to pull just the pulley and could not get it to break free for replacement so I’m onto removing the alternator completely to get it off.

    • @wesleysmith249

      You're welcome. I've never bothered with the pulley itself. Just get a replacement alternator from a reliable company with a good warranty and call it a day.
