I do this all the time in AI races and all I do is remove penalties. But ya some of those time penalties can be absurd.

What do you have for a router? Wireless connection or wired? I had issues in the spring that came out of the blue. Never an issue in almost 3 years. Was using an unmanaged switch with other stuff in it that connected to the iRacing computer. Got it wired directly into my Spectrum modem and haven't had any issues since.
