Hi I'm Hex, cars are my passion, whether its building them, driving them or breaking them - I love it all.
I do my best to keep learning, whether its engine swaps, fabrication, electronics, body repair or making UA-cam videos! I think the best way to learn is to give it a try, sometimes I fail but I always learn from the mistakes!

Making mini tubs without a shrinker! - 1972 Vauxhall Firenza LS swap [Ep 18]
I tried my hand at hammerforming to make a pair of mini-tubs for the LS swap Firenza. I figured this was the best way to make wheel tubs from sheet steel without having to buy a shrinker / stretcher tool and it turned out pretty good! - Maybe don't try this method if it's also "arm day" at the Gym though!
Factory fitment on this car was a 5.5J wheel with a 175 tyre - we've now got room for a 10J with a 275, this little Firenza is gonna fly!

So I decided to make a water pump delete for my LS Swap! I'll be installing a Davies Craig electric water pump, fabricating a coolant crossover manifold for the front of the block and saving a ton of money compared to an off the shelf kit! A neat solution for an LS swap in a tight engine bay with limited room for fans or the radiator. 00:00 - Off the shelf options 01:10 - Test fitting the parts...

I know this is old but where did you get the flanges? All I can find is aluminum flanges.
@@kingdavid1000 I think it was just eBay or similar... I tried to look up the listing but can't see it anymore 🤷🏻
any updates ??
Yes! Lots has been going on - struggling to find the time to work on the car + day job + edit videos! Promise I'll upload again soon! - you can find me on Instagram @hexytech for more up to date posts!
This is a class project, loving every minute of it 👍🏻👍🏻
Wow……..❤
My first car was a viva, cost £320. I always aspired to purchase a Firenza ….little did I realise they were so rare. Your work is amazing and really appreciate these videos 😎
Thanks, glad you like em! I paid a little more, but not that much more for mine!
Is there any specific reason why you also didnt plug weld the pieces where the glyco pins went into?
Hi, I did weld these holes also - I didn't film it but I think you can see around 6:44 that these holes have been plug welded 👍
That's an excellent choice, and will handle the LS power.
That's awesome. You are a clever old Hexy! Now I'm wondering what rear axle or IRS you will be using. My choice if you are going live axle would be Scimitar GTE - was originally a modified jag mk 2 so accepts the all the Jag Salisbury diffs including the 3.54:1 powerlock LSD which will work really well with a tremek T5 'box. They also are 5 linked in the GTE so will come with link and panhard rod brackets. Although drum braked, I bet there a disc conversins already engineered by the Scimitar hill climb gang and probably cheaper than going ford 8" or Chevy.
I do have a scimitar 4ha axle in my parts pile but I won't be using it on this build! I am using a ford 8.8 from a mid 90s Mustang. They have the same triangulated 4 link design as the Firenza also the parts availability for them is fantastic
As you say "frickin' sweet".
Excellent skills, could have watched all that work in real time.?. New satellite in primer looks co cool!
I know really good home fabrication when I see it and that is excellent home fabrication. Love the raised welds inside the sill section that aren't ground flush.
Cheers Neil - if the weld is inside a section like the sill I'd rather just clean it up than grind it back and risk weakening the metal around it!
Another excellent video, superb skills.
Great work! Between you and Fitzee, you're giving me a step by step guide to my Epic project (if I could ever get back to it!).
To be mentioned in the same sentence as Fitzee is one hell of an honour! He's a total legend & I've picked up many a trick from his videos. Thanks and hope you manage to get back to your project sooooon!
Looking forward to your next video
Should be ready in a couple of weeks 😉
Very interesting stuff young man!
Very impressive. It's amazing what you can achieve when having to improvise with the tools and equipment you have available.
Necessity is the mother of invention for sure!
I'm sticking this method in my mental toolbox! I made a bellmouth for a "dummy" throttle body for some flowbench testing once using only a hammer and some bits of round bar as dollies. Managed to get the lip to roll round in a nice radius and everything, it's surprising how far the metal will move if you just keep tapping away. The bellmouth was mostly stretching though, it never occured to me you could shrink it this much without heat or special tools, nice job!
Yep patience is key, though it's always sooo tempting to try and do it in as few whacks as possible... Which is not the best of ideas! Managing to form a complete bellmouth is no small feat!
Spot on as ever.
That's how I was taught when I did my aircraft sheet metal training. We had to use Beech wood for the formers, a very hard wood but excellent for the job. You achieved excellent results with MDF. Best wishes, Dean.
Very cool, would that have been aluminium? I can see it working great with ally! Beech would make for a fantastically durable former - the MDF is ok for a one or two time use but that's all I needed and it's comparatively cheap!
@@HexyTech yes aluminium. It has to be heat treated to make it workable and again to restore the properties post-work. Best wishes, Dean.
Great work!
Thanks Gary!
fantastic job glad i found your channel bro
Hello Dave! (and thanks, glad you enjoyed it!)

Fantastic job mate 👍
Cheers Steven!
I'm glad you wear safely gear,so many don't 😮
I've had enough bits of metal in my eyes and my hearing is bad enough from years playing in bands so I always gear up these days!
Mate! They rock! Never thought about the 'clamp 'em together' method, but now I've seen it, I like the result and can see where it would be VERY useful fabricating the likes of any point on the car where you need to form a tight lip (straight or curved) of any length. Corners (or curves) with flanges in the inner sill or floor pans would certainly be easier with this method. Yeah - a shrinker-stretcher is a great tool, but if you're not continuously building project after project, they might be a bit hard to justify the expense. Then again, thick sheets of MDF would soon add up on a build, wouldn't they?! Haha! The results speak for themselves though, eh. Great to see more progress on the little car. All the best.
Yeah I guess MDF costs would add up!! You just gotta start with the biggest parts you need to make then cut the MDF into smaller and smaller parts as you go 🤣 - would definitely work even easier with thinner sheet, I like to use 1.2mm on the floor n bits like this but 1mm would do for most body panels..
Between the rear wheels: May I propose a Volvo rear axel? They can handle the power. Opel/Vauxhalls can not. Don’t ask me how I know….
Agreed, the Vauxhall axle would snap like a twig!! I have a ford 8.8 from a mid 90s Mustang to go under this 👍
You seem to add a lot of metal for strength to the existing structure. But have you considered cutting out some of the existing structure, and putting in something stronger, like a 2x4 beam for front struts? It does not add so much weight, but is stronger.
Hi! Yes I have thought about some things like this - there is potential in the future if I want to make the car lighter that I may make a full tubular front subframe, this would likely be lighter and stronger than the factory item - but a lot of design and fabrication work also! The car was under 1000kg from factory and now with 4x the power, adding a little weight shouldn't be too much of a problem..
Very professional approach to mockup fitting. Glad you kept those bolts in place. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.❤😊
Its going to look badass with those rims filling the wide arches perfectly 😎👌
Great detailed work.ps.love the little cordless dremill
Thanks Andrew! It's a Milwaukee one, great for cuts in fiddly areas if you use the right discs 👍

Deep dish wheels are the best. Top work young man!
Cheers! Glad you like em!
Great work as ever, its all in the detail.
Cheers!
Very interesting video and those arches look superb already. Those wheels and tyres looked huge because the Firenza is such a compact car compared to the bloated cars of today. I couldn't believe my ears when you said what size they actually were. They look amazing with that deep dish and the black finish. Great work as always.
Yeah I think 15" is about the biggest you can go on a Firenza before it starts to look weird! Everything today is rolling around on 18/19/20" rims!
Rotisseries are great, I made one many years ago 😊 great work dude
Wouldn't want to do this kinda job without one!

@@HexyTech I guess you picked the wrong week to quit widening arches!
More great work mate ,see you at the pub bruv .
Those arch’s are incredible and the wheels are superb
Cheers William glad you like em!
Takes me back to my build - had 8s all round but wanted 10s on the rear for the v8 but never finished it. Loving everything you're doing so far, Really makes me wish I'd kept mine but my first house meant I had no real time to finish it. That was over 30 years ago now... Larger tubs for the wheels?
Hi Gary, I'll be running 8s in the fronts and probably would have done the same in the rear if the rear arches weren't already butchered! Do you know what happened to yours after you moved it on? Yes, making the larger tubs is the next video incoming 😉
@@HexyTech Unfortunately I couldn't get any interest in buying the project (embarrassing to be another 'unfinished project), so scrapped the shell and sold off all the parts. The shell had Capri Zakspeed arches and a perfect copy droopsnoot nose cone that was taken from an original. When I think about it, it would probably cost me a small fortune to get a shell, nosecone and arches to try and build it again. The engine was a smallblock Ford 302 V8 mated to a T5 5 speed gearbox (from a Sierra Cosworth). Wish I had your skills back then as my work looks very amateurish in comparison. Can't wait to see your progress on this as it really takes me back.
@@garyl5128 oh that sounds like one hell of a build! I do like a zakspeed Capri - that must have looked cool! You're right, probably would cost a small fortune now! Skills are something that's always improving, no shame in looking back at old work and wanting to improve it! At some point I'll be revisiting some bits of my turbodiesel Magnum for exactly that reason!
@@HexyTech It was a lot of fun which is why I'm enjoying what you're doing here (only much better). The bellhousing for the 302 to T5 was cast by a company in Australia, and it was the first they made (after a few failed attempts), They specialised in mating Japanese gearboxes to various engines up till then. Mine would have had an internal hydraulic piston as a clutch release bearing (think I still have that somewhere) as there was no room for a clutch fork (would interfere with the exhaust down pipes). Finding problems and working out how to get round them, what to fabricate etc, hugely enjoyable. Makes me have an itch to do something though I don't have a garage, just a drive which puts me off a bit. Plus I'm now the same age as old people which is scary lol.
This is a tremendous project, you are doing a brilliant job. I am watching with great interest as I was lucky enough to acquire and recommission an original HP Firenza back in the early 80’s. It was later written off by a drunk driver in a triumph 2000, after I sold it . (Big error!! I still miss that car). So it is so good to see this one coming back to life😀
Thanks glad you're enjoying the vids! That's definitely a "one that got away" story - an original HP was rare from day 1 🥲
The black wheels look bloody awesome! Love the fact that you went for a simple spoke design too.
Cheers! Yeah I didn't want anything too "modern" looking so I thought a simple 5 spoke design worked! It was a toss up between these and a Minilite/Watanabe style and I already have those on my magnum...
Wheels are nice and wide and Should be Shown off not hidden with Hide all Black 😢 arches look awesome 😎 great build so far
I'm usually of that opinion too, but with a choice between black or chrome, I'm gonna go with black!
Nice. A real labour of love.
It sure is, I'd be making a biiiig mistake if I was doing it to make a profit 😆
Looking very nice indeed, keep up the good work 👍
Cheers Steve! Bit cold out in the garage at the moment but trying to keep at it!
Spare wheel well was a well documented rot point. Watch where the rear shock mounting points too. Also inner trailing arms to diff 😮
All that's coming soon! Can confirm the shock mounts are rotten! They were on my magnum too (they rotted out on my mum's magnum within 10 years of it being new!)
Very thorough & methodical. Seem to remember 🤔 Blydenstein wrote about preparing the front end for rally work. You seem to keep to the original theme as far as the floor pan Seems as though your rear flared guards came out well ❤ Look forward to next installment. 😊
Yes I've got the coburn and blydenstein book on tuning Vivas and firenzas, the chassis strengthening plates I've applied on this car are based off those in this book!
