NEW YORK, 1863. AS THE CIVIL WAR RAGES ON,
free Black Americans and Irish immigrants live and love together in the unlikeliest of neighborhoods - the dangerous streets and crumbling tenement houses of Lower Manhattan’s notorious Five Points slum. The amalgamation between the communities took its most exuberant form with raucous dance contests on the floors of the neighborhood bars and dance halls. It is here in the Five Points where tap dancing was born. But this racial equilibrium would come to a sharp and brutal end when President Lincoln’s need to institute the first Federal Draft to support the Union Army would incite the deadly NY Draft Riots of July 1863.
Within this galvanizing story of racial harmony undone by a country at war with itself, we meet the denizens of a local saloon called Paradise Square. These characters include the indomitable Black woman who owns it; her Irish-Catholic sister-in-law and her Black minister husband; a conflicted newly arrived Irish immigrant; a fearless freedom seeker; an anti-abolitionist political boss; and a penniless songwriter trying to capture it all. They have conflicting notions of what it means to be an American while living through one of the most tumultuous eras in our country’s history.
With visceral and nuanced staging and choreography that captures the pulsating energy when Black and Irish cultures meet and set to a contemporary score that reimagines early American song, Paradise Square depicts an overlooked true-life moment when hope and possibility shone bright.

I saw this live in Chicago before it went to Broadway. It is unmatched. Truly a spiritual experience.
Who's here in the wake of the election, feeling every emotion possible, with no way to express them? This song feels even more important right now, for me...
Can we finally at least get this song as a single please
ABSOLUTELY
Who’s here after the 2024 elections???
Where can I buy the sheet music for this song? It is so beautiful!
Woulda, coulda, shoulda...
Happy Earth Day
Can anyone provide a plot synopsis so we know what the context of this song is? Would love to know more about it!
Basically those baddies let by John Dossett Character burned down her saloon and she is singing that they can take away her saloon but never their spirit
Here it is you bastards Cast your light on the life you were made to hate You come to destroy us? This building? and then what? what will you win Dr. John Cole? You? Bonnaby Baker? Miss Emily Watts? Lucky, Mike Quinlan I know why you have come here And I know all your names You really think your faces can hide behind these flames I fed you at my table, let you all run off a bill Is this the thanks you give me, how you repay goodwill If you think I'll run away, you've got a lot to learn These walls do not define me I say Let it burn Inside this little building is a rare and special lot We somehow found each other and look what that has brought a place you are afraid of a world you'll never know you can take it at a vast you can burn it down to ash and non of us will grow If you think we'll run away - you've got a lot to learn we're stronger than the fire and I say Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn I know why you have come here What you want to erase But I know that our spirit is bigger than this place Look at what we have created we gave ourselves a voice we were safer seperated but love left us no choice And now all alone I stand at the point of no return these walls do not define me I say Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn Let it burn
I almost didn't see this show. I didn't think I wanted to sit through a musical about Irish and black period piece. I am so glad I went. I was sitting first row orchestra and my mouth stayed open the entire show. When this show play all I could say was Damn. Amazing. The Tony version was only 30% of that it sounded like live. The marketing of the show was horrible. They should have pushed this song from the beginning not right before the show was forced to close. Sure hope someone can bring it back. A very powerful show.
Is the cast album anywhere someone help
Where is the cast recording for this show? What is actually going on
She has given Idina Menzel a run for her money.

It is a damning indictment on the state of modern Broadway that this didn't have a longer run.
I cannot listen to this song without saying “Jesus Effing Christ” right afterwards. She blows me away every time. You can hear every bit of acting and raw emotion in her voice. Few people have deserved the Tony more than her.
1st time hearing the whole song since watching Paradise Square segment Tony Awards 2022 on tv. Brava! Lots of goosebumps and emotions especially at the last note
The chorus! ❤❤❤
This is giving weak Les Mis. Yikes
AMAZING SHOW!!!!!!!!
Just got this recommended a year later. I miss this show so much. So sad I never got to see it

My gawd!! Still heart wrenching and tear inducing all this time later. Phew 😮💨
Loved this show. And to think I almost cancelled. Glad I didn't. Very powerful.

So glad I got to see this
This is one of my favorite songs! I’m so upset I’m not going to have the chance to experience this show
for us and the children
I have Chromosthesia - I can see music. And there's... Well, I don't have words to describe the colors I witness when I listen to this. I fainted the first time I heard it and although that sounds quasi-ingenue, don't worry. It feels like it. I can't get through this without crawling on the floor.
IT'S BEAUTIFUL TO SEE THE ACTUAL RECORDING ! Weird to see a white person singing our song but we all need money
Maybe I’m just confused but isn’t the show about the solidarity and community between Irish immigrants and African Americans during a time where they were both facing heavy discrimination? If I’m off just lmk but the white people in this case make perfect sense.
@@chickenelafsworld7105nope. You’re right on. The whole show is about the African American and Irish community that inhabited the same area and their symbiotic relationship.
RACISM.......LET IT BURN!!!!!!!!! Salute from Buffalo New York ♠️

It’s such a shame that none of these people were getting paid at all. The producer wasn’t paying them when the show came to Broadway was selling out almost every night. That man shouldn’t be able to produce another show
The way I need this song on Apple Music
Love a black women to infinity to infinity

UGHHHHH it’s so powerful
So beautiful ❤ I saw this cast in Chicago about a year ago. The show was breathtaking. Not just the music and the outrageously talented singers, but the dancing! The dancing! Such a great show. Everyone should have the pleasure to see it.
the fact we never got a cast recording of this show still pisses me the off.
It was recorded, but has been held back from release because people have not been paid.
This song was the first and only time I've ever seen a mid-show standing ovation. Joaquina was absolutely incredible.
Absolutely beautiful, let's bring Paradise Square back. Best soundtrack ever in my opinion, and play as well.
i think i broke the replay button
what is taking so long, now they say the artists have not been paid. yet on wikipedia it says the album was expected to be released in september and yet it still has not come...
You can tell they love singing this song.
idg why i can't listen to this on apple music
2:45
Now that the show is over they not making a cast album?
They did. They can't share it because everyone is still unpaid.
Sigh, where is this cast recording
Thank you so much for sharing. I wish I could have seen this live. Hope to have the cast album one day…
It’s September where’s the Cast Recording?
