I can't see what you are doing in the timer box. My timer doesn't seem to have any place to place the multimeter leads. There are no exposed wires or screws visible. I can't see what you are connecting the probes to. Orbit box just like yours, model 57894.
You have to open the face of the controller. If u see the wires but no screw, u will have to remove wire to check
Hello, are you interested in learning about the smart irrigation controller? You can complete all watering settings through the app
Any advice on finding lost solenoid?
@@KingNate_85 rent a valve finder or find a head on that zone and dig until you find the valve…
What do i do when I have an old one with no common. It has red, yellow, and a blue.
If it’s an electrical controller it will have a common wire. It may not be white but there has to be 2 wires coming from each valve to complete the loop.
Thanks so much from Austin Texas! I have the hunter pro c and I’ve tried everything but I think it’s the module what is malfunctioning.
Great to hear!
What a great video, thank you for sharing. I found a short in zone 2 and repaired it. Also had a loose ground on zone 5. Very well done, thank you so much!
So lad to help!
5:39 when you were measuring ohm, was sprinkler controller powered on? or plugged in to power?
When reading ohms the controller should be off. When measuring AC Controller has to be on
great training video. thank you!
You're very welcome!
This video saved me time, effort, money, and materials. I replaced the guts of a rainbird valve vs replacing the whole thing. Installers took shortcuts and connected straight to the PVC rather than putting collars on either end, so I would have had to cut out the valve and replace it with collars. As it was, the repair took more time to expose the valve from the dirt than anything else. Thank you for posting this!

Hello Jimmy…. Your channel is very helpful. I have a backflow on my system, however the handles and nuts are rusted and will not turn. I sprayed WD40 & Silicone Lubricant on the rusted areas, but they still won’t move by hand. I tried channel locks as well, however I was concerned that if I apply too much pressure, then I would break the backflow assembly. Do you have any tips for getting the handles to move without damaging the backflow assembly? In advance, THANKS for your help!
No, I spray with wd40 and if that doesn’t work I have to turn off at the street. You can put a ball valve after the backflow and will have a way to turn it off in an emergency.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!🙏

Greetings from San Antonio, TX. You and your videos are great. Since 1995, I have gone through two Hardie (Irritrol) RD-600 controllers. Today the controller is acting squirrely again. Rather than getting another refurbished RD-600, can I replace this controller with ANY 24 AC controller? Or perhaps the 24 volt transformer is bad? Can I replace it with ANY 24 Volt AC transformer? How much current is typically needed? Marius Perron
@@mperron3 thank you. You can test the controller with a multimeter to see if the transformer. We don’t work on controllers. If they are bad we just replace them. Yes you can replace it with any brand of controller. I hope the best for you!
I have volts but no continuity
No continuity means a break in the line or bad connection somewhere.
@@sprinklerrepair4L it's still showing a voltage reading on a 35 zone weathermatic controller
It's Zone 31 and 32 on a weathermatic controller operating a continuity test they are the only two zones showing a open line both solenoids were replaced all common and direct wires seem to be in the proper places no cuts these are also the only two zones showing signs of voltage at the controller tried toning the wires back to the valve tone test was inconclusive
@@UKNO444 at this point, I would trace the wires with a valve finder to see if I can locate where they are losing continuity.
@@UKNO444 Voltage at the controller only means the controller is doing it's job. It does not mean that wiring in the field is good. No continuity means there is a break or bad connection somewhere. You'll have to trace it out with a valve finder.
can zones/valves sharing the same common run at the same time in parallel? or does the controller make sure that they all run serially?
@@Agisilaos746 if the controller is working correctly, it should only run 1 zone at a time.
I really appreciate your channel content! I headed out in the field to figure out what is going on with 2 of my zones not popping up and running. Your content is excellent and is very helpful to troubleshooting efforts!

I have valve that not open change solenoid change diaphragm and still not working
I have a drip system on station 1 for flower bed and grass sprinkler for the back yard on another station. For some reason when station one goes on, it also triggers the back yard sprinkler. What is causing this? There are a total of 8 stations. The back yard keeps turning on with only the drip stations 1 and 8.
It sounds like the controller might be giving AC to both zones. If it was coming on with all stations it would be a bad valve on the zone that is running when it shouldn't.
@sprinklerrepair4L thanks. I switched the solenoid and it was back to normal.
Just an amazing video. This guy deserves an Oscar.

Is the main shutoff valve to the house separate from the irrigation system?
Yes there should be a separate one for your irrigation system.
Thank you! Really helpful

That is crazy that you built this set up just to show random strangers on the internet how to fix their sprinkler system. We appreciate it. My issue is I have 5 zones. Zone 5 which is the nearest to my controller works. Zone 4 wasn’t working because of a broken common wire. I fixed that and zone 4 works but zones 3, 2, 1 don’t work. I realize now that I need to buy a multimeter and at least I have an understanding of what the common wire is. Something is happening between zones 4 and 3 that is causing the rest of the zones to not work. This gives me a starting point. Thanks.
@@johnnywang206 My pleasure, I hope the very best for you!
@@sprinklerrepair4L I figured it out, my common wire leading to zones 3, 2 and one was not connected to my common wire in zone four. The last time I did wiring, I had split them apart. Seems so easy now, but was very confusing when I was trying to figure it out thanks.
So glad to hear! Thanks for letting us know.
That swing joint just blew my mind! I literally said outloud OH MY GOSH! Lol I thought I’d seen everything for adjusting height of a sprinkler. Just replaced about a dozen. I wish I knew someone to share this with! lol
Thank you! They keep coming up with new stuff all the time!
I’m my goodness I could literally cry! I have spent hours and hours trying to figure this out AND someone cut my “white” and I had idea how to fix! Now I see why nothing o past a certain zone will work and I just need to figure out how to fix the cut wire. A worker cut my 1” blue pen pipe and the wire. The pipe has a red wire sorta of under it but almost too close to cut the pipe. I have dug out the area but can’t find a good answer for repairing pipe as I think I have to remove about an inch or little more and the couplings are so short! I found a barbed coupling but my hands are weak and these are so hard for me to push in. The other coupling is one of those that goes on the outside, slips on and stays because of the tiny metal teeth inside the rim. But I’m not sure I have enough pipe to reach once I remove an inch. And now I’m off to see what other videos you have because you are the best “teacher” I have found after weeks of searching! Thank you for taking time to make these videos. By the way I’m in Texas as well, little town just outside of Austin.
Thank you for the kind words! So glad it helped!
Great explanation with the different types of valves. One of my zones stopped working and I determined it is indeed the valve malfunctioning. I will be replacing the guts this week. Thanks for this great vid!
So glad to hear! Thank you!
Great.

I have re-wired my sprinkler system (took over the parents' old house) and put in the Orbits 6 zone. When we turned the circuit breaker back on, the Orbits popped and smoked..... Now nothing turns on, no pump, no water. Yes, I connected the appropriate wires to the correct places. Any suggestions?
I would call orbit and get there input on what went wrong.
This was one of the best educational videos on this topic. Thank you for making this available!
@@rationalrevoltable Thank you, my pleasure!
Why am I getting only 23+/- volts. The solenoid won’t start with less than 24v. Randomly it will work. When working it’s always above 24v B-hyve controller. New.
Usually 23v will open a solenoid. I would call the manufacturer help line and get there input.
How do I manually run through zones on my imperial valet controller?

Excellent video though many years ago!
Thanks!
thank you for sharing this information.
My pleasure!
Is this a Rachio specific video?
No it isn’t
What does it mean if when you check the common wire and dedicated wire and the reading is way below 20?
Most of the time it means solenoid is bad or going bad. If 2 zone are wired together u get half of the reading and it’s okay.
Thx 👍
I am getting a error on my controller that says Check Valve 2. Valve 2 is zone 2. If i turn the valve to the on position then the sprinklers comes on and they work. But they won't turn off unless I manually close the valve. I am think it's the solenoid and I will try to replace just that this weekend and see how it goes.
Yes, agreed a bad solenoid is the most common reason for an error on your controller.
What is the brand of the first one ......the one you said is no longer available....That you have all together tied up with the plumbing??? Of course...that is the one I have!!!
If i want to do mostly my own work, running lines and heads, who do I call to get a line tapped into the main? A plummer, or an irrigation person?
You don’t have to use one in Texas if you’re a home owner, but are supposed to follow all the regulations. A plumber or irrigator can do that for you?
Could you help me with a question? I just installed a 6 zone Orbit controller but I only have 5 zones to my system. I have wires to the 5 zones but the 6th is not connected. My system is hooked up to a GCFI receptacle and whenever the system gets to the 6th zone it trips the GCFI. Can I just put a jump wire from 5 to 6 to prevent the tripping? Thanks for your time.
If you don’t have time on the 6th zone then I can’t see how it would even go to the 6th zone to trip it. Orbit should have a help line. I would call them and see what they say.
Fantastic video!
Thank you!
@@sprinklerrepair4L Would you need a backflow preventer if the system is hooked up to an outdoor spiget instead of directly from the main line?
That maybe tricky, I’d check your local and state laws. If everything is above ground you might be ok
Excellent video!
Thank you!
So I have 11 zones in my system. My system runs off of a shallow well with a 2 Hp pump. System comes on fine with timer and works great until it reaches zone # 8. At that point pressure drops dramatically in zone #8 and only a small stream comes from one or two of that zones heads. I then go to my well pump and crack the threaded bleeder on top of the impeller housing. air bubbles will then come out and within a minute or two zone #8 will pressurize and come to life. The system will then finish off the remaining watering cycle without a hitch. Next day this same problem will repeat. What might I check in my system? Thanks
Sorry pumps are outside my expertise.
Good video , very well explanation of how it works , thank you .

Is there any way to find where sprinkler lines exist under my lawn without digging? I need to rototill some areas and would rather get the lines moved before I tear them into little pieces with heavy equipment.
Not unless you have a drawing or purchase an armada pro 400 and cut the pipes open and trace it with a valve finder…
