SOTU 665 - THE SNAKE

THE SNAKE - Oscar Brown Jr Another animal song from Oscar Brown Jr. as my 3rd and final contribution this season. Oscar was inspired to write this song by the Aesop fable, "The Farmer & the Snake". For the snake voice, I tried to emulate Strother Martin.

SIGNIFYIN' MONKEY - Oscar Brown Jr.. I've been a fan of Oscar's since my high school days. Thanks for a chance to do this one again Cody, one of those I, vi, IV, V songs.

DOG - Tom Dundee / HE'S A GOOD DOG - Fred J. Eaglesmith I like to play these two songs as a medley. I hope they only count as one. This isn't the first time I've done at least one of these. I thought I knew this perfectly, but I screwed up the bridge of the Fred song. The line should be, "He scratches at the back door till someone lets him in, Then he scratches at the other side 'cause he wants...

Don't Sell It Don't Give It Away - Oscar "Buddy" Woods 1934 Here's one that my darlin' lovely wife Maggie suggested. I agreed that it's a good one for the season even though I'm not entirely sure what it means.
SOTU 665 - Yesvember - YES I CAN

YES I CAN - Bob Ruzicka (as performed by VALDY) My sister Sharon suggested this song when she heard the topic of Season 664. Thanks to her for a perfect suggestion. Bob Ruzicka, Canada's Singing Dentist, wrote some beautiful songs and had a CBC TV show called RUZICKA for about a year back in 1972. He had some great guests, some of whom recorded his songs. Some of his guests were Leon Bibb,...
SOTU 664 - Yesvember - YES WE HAVE NO BANANAS

YES! WE HAVE NO BANANAS - Frank Silver and Irving Cohn 1923 You beat me to it Rob. Maggie suggested this song and since we're visiting my sister at a cottage between Kingston and Gananoque on the St. Lawrence River, I thought it'd be nice to do it outside. Until today, it was too windy, but now the car's all packed and it seems calm, I grabbed my sister's uke and here we go.

SOTU 663 - The Sugar Rush - CANDY MAN

Candy Man - Rev. Gary Davis Our host, Chris, started us out with the Candy Man that Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley wrote for the Willy Wonka movie. Steve played a super version of Mississippi John Hurt's Candy Man. That leaves Rev. Gary's version of Candy Man for me. I've heard many singers do this song from Rev. Davis to Dave Van Ronk and even a kids' version by Sharon, Lois & Bram, with...
SOTU 663 The Sugar Rush - AIN'T SHE SWEET

AIN'T SHE SWEET - Milton Ager & Jack Yellen 1927 Recorded Hallowe'en night after the last creatures had paid a visit . I was still wearing the top hat I wore to answer the door. Actually, it was such a lovely evening that Maggie and I ate our supper on the porch and sat outside to greet our visitors. I see that Rob beat me to this one, but I've been thinking about it all day, so I'll do it anyway.

Omg, Jim - I did not expect Gilligan this early! Fan-freakin-tastic! That final arpeggio was icing on the cake. And you made me laugh out loud, so bonus points for that! I am still laughing! (And I think you cracked yourself up just a bit there too, didn't you? 😂)
Thanks for providing the opportunity and for being our host this season Wendy. I borrowed one of Maggie's hats that reminded me of Gilligan's chapeau. Her head is much smaller than mine, but it sits up there for the duration of the song.
@ Thank you - I forgot to mention how much I loved the hat. Commit to the bit!
i wish lynne a happy birthday, both of your voices go smoothly together and i’d love to listen to more. love it!
Love you Lynne happy birthday!
Enjoyed your video and the song is great! Nicely done and happy to see your wife, I assume, join you. I am 71 and play uke and guitar, in an amateur group. This would be a good number for us to perform.
yessss! loved every one of your songs this week, Jim...wish there wasn't a 3 song limit...must have a hundred in my head to play, and i'm sure you do too. just reminded me of 'rattlesnake mountain' :)
I love Rattlesnake Mountain too Jon. I've taught that to many classes of kids. I learned it from a Patrick Sky LP. I just realised that I've posted it in 3 seasons, so I'll give someone else a turn.
why is my toe tapping to the beat?! it wont stop, Jim! what have you done to me?!
That's what I was goin' for Chris. Thanks.
Lost my dog Eli last year. I got him in elementary school and he died after I graduated high school, he was my puppy. He never listened, made a mess everyday, and drove my family nuts, but I've never known a dog that loved as much as he did. He was a good dog and I know your Harry is too, thank you for making this song. I miss him so much but it's nice to know others have felt the same.
Actually, Harry was not my dog, but I have had a few that I loved a lot: Sam, Selby, Erin, Benny. . .
@@PHJimY I already know they were well taken care of then, to a dog you're their whole life. Keep singing!
Great song! I only know the Al Wilson version of this so I'll have to check out the original. That's a pretty good Strother Martin, Jim!
I haven't heard Al Wilsn's version yet, but I'm gonna give it a listen right now. Thanks for dropping by Bob.
I just listened to Al Wilson's version and I love it. "The elephant of the room is that Trump is the living embodiment of the snake that my father wrote about in that song" - Africa Brown, daughter of the late Oscar Brown Jr., on the President using her father's song 'The Snake' to blast immigration
Great stuff! I'm sure Oscar would approve of this version.
Well thanks Edwin. A simple 2 chord song, but it modulates up a couple of times.
This could be a Biblical tune. Nicely performed, Jim. This serpentine can come aboard the Great UU Arc, but will be confined to a cage.
Thanks a lot Cody.
You may have heard the lyrics of this song performed (poorly) by a well-known personality who did so repeatedly, without permission, without paying royalties and without crediting Oscar Brown Jr., in spite of being asked to stop by Oscar's estate. (I admit to not having paid royalties, but I'm not profiting from this.)
Haven’t heard this in decades. Well done!
6 more songs!
real nice, Jim! it's such a good pick for the week! big thanks to your sis for the suggestion and applause to you for the spot on bring!
Thanks Chris. I'd almost forgotten about this song till Sharon suggested it.
Boy, that's quite a tale. Great performance, Jim
Thanks you Cody. I love doing this song.
oh YESSSSS brilliant song Jim!!!! this is awesome mate, straight to my 'to-learn' list... can totally hear Patrick Sky singing and playing this and owning it :)
Thanks for that Jon. I wonder if he ever did it. I'm a Patrick Sky fan and often play "Separation Blues". Check out Oscar Brown Jr.'s version.
you have the perfect voice and delivery for the talkin blues, Jim. what great songs these are. you paired them together so well
Thanks Jon. You're too kind.
What a great song. I liked the talking blues style. Dogs have a big place in my life which made that a moving couple of songs for me. I dread the day I say goodbye to my good dogs. Thanks Jim.
Thanks a lot Chris. The dog in the photo is Django and he has been gone for about a decade.
That was real nice, Jim. Both songs flowed together seamlessly, and they really expressed the value of a companion dog.
Cody and thanks for being our host this week.
Jim that was such a cool song. Thanks
Thank you Sheb.
Thanks for giving it a spin Allen.
Well done, Jim. It's a great "yes" song.
Thank you Chris.
A little cold there for bananas it looks like. Well done, Jim. That place is beautiful!
Thanks a lot Chris.
Nice, Jim! Good suggestion by sis 👍
Thanks Brian. I thought so too.
I was gonna do this one too, but more in the old style, then I got lazy.
You still have a day and a half. Go for it. I thought mine was old style.
@PHJimY I'd have to practice it a bit before I could record it. My wife injured her knee a few days ago, and can't really walk, so I've been helping her a lot. And, I just had to come up with a Seasons theme, and post it. No time, Jim
@@Renaissance-Man-Ukulele Wish her well please.
gorgeous love song mate. great seeing the photo of you and Valdy too. this is beautiful.
Thanks a lot Jon. Nice to do material from Canadian song-writers.
Another toe tapping cover, lovely job Jim, sweet playing.
Thanks a lot Graham.
I love seeing Seasons people play outdoor. Enjoyed this, Jim!❤
What a lovely place to spend a few days with my little sister and my darlin' lovely wife. Thanks Joo.
@@PHJimY sounds so lovely!😍
@@PHJimY awwww super sweet. what a scene and a great tune! nice one, Jim!
@@hands_on_lanzon Thanks Chris!
the 2nd song that came into my mind this week too Jim! love your take on this mate. such a fun song and a gorgeous spot to boot! :)
Thanks Jon. Our family has been visiting that spot since I was a kid. Our family no longer owns a spot there, but we have a friend who rents a cottage on his property and we still visit there each year, usually in the fall.
I was hoping this song would make an appearance and we have two great nd very different versions. I didn't think it would suit me even though it was the first song that came to mind even though I've never heard anything but the chorus. Lovely toe-tapping version in a beautiful location.
Thanks a lot Andrew. I did this one about a year ago, but I had to relearn it.
Nice!!!
Thanks Judah.
You're welcome
oh yes indeed! fantastic Jim! first (and only song) i thought of for this week. just love love LOVE these tin-pan era songs and i know you do do too. great listen mate. :)
And you did a wonderful job on this song too Jon. I hope we hear a few more interpretations.
This was also the first and only "yes" song that occurred to me too.
enjoyed it Jim! that end strum with your smile capped it right off 😁
Thanks Chris, and thanks for being our host this season.
This isn't the song I expected from the title. New one for me. Fabulous!
I was thinking of the one that Steve did, but since he beat me to it, I opted for this one.
Very entertaining and nicely-done, Jim! God bless, Charles
watching this is like a little vacation :)
Thanks a lot Wendy.
Wonderful!
Thanks a lot Nick.
Super rhythm playing Jim, top song too.
Thanks a lot.
aaahhhh, love this version Jim. your voice and playing are just so right
Thanks Jon. I taught a kid-friendly version of this to many kids over the years, Gingerbread man - Santa Claus, Gingerbread man - Santa Claus, Gingerbread man - Santa Claus, Gingerbread man with raisins for eyes Gonna eat you just as fast as I can.
@@PHJimY haha! that's great Jim :)
There is certainly a race of candy men. Another version I had not heard. Nicely done, Jim!
Thanks a lot Chris.
I was thinking of this one too. Suits you well sir. I like Donovan’s version. I’ve heard some Gary Davis versions with a mostly different set of lyrics..but that’s par for the course with these songs.
I haven't heard Donovan's version, but I'm off to look it up now.
yessss! love this Jim, super rendition mate. loved the scatting in the middle :) vo-de-o-do!
Thanks a lot Jon. If I learn to pick like you I can drop the scatting.
There seem to be a lot of "candy men" out there! A lovely job on this, Jim!
Thanks a lot Val. The one Steve did is my favourite.
Well played Jim, and song that absolutely *had* to be there.
Thanks Mitch.
Nice, Jim. I'm glad to hear your sweet version of the song. It sounded great and once again great hat!
Well thanks Chris. The hat was a gift from a dear friend a few years ago.
Great job Jim ... this seems to have become the song of the week! I love the top hat and the idea of you and Maggie sitting outside to greet your "creatures" ... I hope you didn't scare them to death!
Thanks Val. It was the first song that came to my mind this week.
That old Gibson sure sounds sweet
Thanks a lot Sheb. I like it a lot.
I am just partial to Gibson flat tops and especially those old Kalamazoo built ones. I have a '47 LG2 and a '64 C1. I have owned others and love to play them. Love your channel. Thanks
@@panhandlingray I like 'em too. My 2nd guitar, bought in 1964 for $125, was a '58 J50. I had Edward Dick convert the adj. bridge into a fixed one circa 1970. My brother now owns it and it's lovely.
yesss Jim!!!!
Thanks a lot Jon.
Played so well Jim! And as far as I know you didn't get your wakis and wikis mixed up.
That’s what wakipedia is for 🤓
Thanks a lot Steve. Thanks to Joo for getting me in on time.
