Cucumber Tasting: The 5 Varieties We're Growing - Episode 25
Переглядів 15221 годину тому
Fun shorter video this week featuring a tasting of the 5 cucumbers we're growing. Crystal Apple, Poona Kheera, Little Leaf OG, Socrates and Patio. We've have been enjoying cukes for about 3 weeks, but it took a minute for the Little Leaf to join the party so we could do a tasting/comparison. I was surprised at Al's winner choice. The only one of these I've grown before is the Poona Kheera. The ...

Oh wow Robin that’s some amazing garlic 🧄 excellent label idea. You certainly have some marvellous harvests, I have had a few but definitely won’t be whining about gluts 🤦♀️. Your garleeks are so big 😮 I better get on feeding mine 😂😂. Great update guys hope you have a wonderful week ahead, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦
I find leeks love the nitrogen boosts. Harvests are coming in strong now.
@@RobinGardens I’ll give mine feed then 👍👍
Robin. You have the best looking garden in the you tube world.
How very kind of you to say that. It definitely has its moments of grandeur.......then powdery mildew sets in LOL Truly appreciate your watching and for your very kind comment.
Great to see another harvest Robin ❤ Garlic looks awesome, and the wire works so well.
TY it's all coming in strong now. That wire is a game changer I like...so easy and frees up cabinet space for storage. 🥰
Bumper harvest ❤❤❤
It's been a daily harvest of multiple things now.....no complaints. This point in the season gets a little manic.
Can you eat carrot leaves, are they safe to eat??
Yes you can! I have a fellow gardener friend who swears that carrot tops make the best pesto. I think he mixes it with basil. Personally, I've never tried it because the tops are available when there is an abundance of so many other yummies in the garden. TY for watching!
Great advice! 🥕👨🌾

I pick my cucumbers before the seeds form, and the skins get too thick, the crystal apple is a nice one which I didn't grow this season which I now regret. ♻️🥒🥒🥒Happy gardening, Terry King.
Great video personally I’ve never cared for cucumbers.
I have a friend that dislikes fresh cukes but loves pickles.
😊your garden is beautiful.
TY. It's definitely our Happy Place. More rain than normal has kept the grass etc green even in the heat.😃
Hello, nice to meet and connect with you.🙏❤
Glad you stopped by. How is your garden doing?
I just went to check and yes, I have a crystal lemon plant growing! Its the one from Clare @thefarmyardgarden. There are loads of fruits coming. I'm excited for them now!! Enjoyed your taste test. You looked very serious Robin!! 😂
LOL I'm pretty serious about tasting! Actually we had fun doing this.....I wanted to re-record after I cut our heads off...but I thought it would wreck that first reaction feel. 🥰
You harvested a lot more than knowledge on these. ☺ Interesting to watch, although "my" seed company don't carry any of these. I mainly buy from an organic seed company that specializes in Scandinavian types, as many can't be grown outside here. They have one called Sikkim which they say is very tasty and also turns brown, but could be harvested younger. Could be interesting to try. Enjoy your cucumbers!
I've pickled some but I definately have enough so I'll be giving a bunch away. It's crazy that some seeds are not available worldwide. However, getting cucumbers that are known to grow in your climate is a good thing. I tend to go that direction as I don't want to waste too much space on a "maybe". 🥰
Gerald loves lemon cukes and the seeds are ok he says because they are soft 😂. We have rain today I couldn’t be happier to see it finally. Great taste testing 👍👍, have a super week, Ali ☔️🇨🇦
I wonder if it's the same as crystal apple.....I actually scooped the seeds out and pickled some last night for something different. I'm going to make Aji Mango jam/jelly. I've been watching a few videos.
@@RobinGardens yes they are basically the same or similar flavour
@@myrustygarden Good to know for the future as Nanou sent me these from Kew gardens. I might have grown too many🥰
I picked my lone Socrates. It was delicious- thin skinned and not-many tiny seeds. I was happy with it! So I hope it’s prolific now that’s producing. But it looked different more like a lunch box size than slicer like yours. Overall I haven’t had much luck the last 3 years with cucumbers, and spent them trying to grow open pollinated varieties but they consistently had way too many seeds and not much flesh.
Sure hope they kick into gear for you. I've been picking them smaller since I'm getting loads now and you can just munch without cutting them. It's a keeper for me. I've planted a succession too.🥰
Hi Robin I grew Socrates last year and I thought they were tasteless compared to a small marketore 76. Id like to grow a crystal lemon one year. Nice tasting.😁👍👌❤️🙏
Honestly, it's hard to pick a clear winner...... Al said I picked Socrates, because the seed was the most expensive (like a dollar a piece) and I wanted to justify the purchase🤣😂😉 I know what you mean about tasting though...everyone raves about the Japanese Black Trifele Tomato and to date....it's the most flavorless tom I have ever grown. I pickled the crystal apple last night....I scooped out the seeds with a melon baller first. Something different to try.
Thanks for the tour. Although you've had some challenges this season, so many plants are thriving and look amazing. I was looking away for a second and then back and thought you were showing some melons, but they were tomatoes, haha. Those were huge! I will be cutting down my outside cucumbers tomorrow, powdery mildew all the way almost and they have been trying to grow cucumbers under healthy leaves the last two weeks, but they' stay tiny and then turn yellow. Next year I'll succession sow and just remove the plants at first sight of fungal issues. No point in hoping for miracles. ;) I haven't had 8 cucumbers altogether this season, 8 a day is such a blessing. The one inside the plastic greenhouse is healthy, but mostly male flowers. Some challenges and some successes here too. I made dinner today with my own patty pan, chard, kale, jalapeño, spring onion and herbs. And I've eaten several tomatoes already. Life is good.
Well my melons are really tiny. Not sure why, but I'll be grateful for any I get this year. Cucumber beetle has arrived, so it's only a matter of time before they are goners. Ohh that sounds like a lovely dinner. Maybe try a gynoecious cucumber.....one that produces mostly female flowers. Or a gynoecious and parthenocarpic ....one that fruits without the need for pollination.
@@RobinGardens Mine is parthenocarpic, but mostly female is a good idea, thanks. You have some nasty pests over there. No cucumber beetle or squash vine borer here. I've had some aphids, caterpillars and leaf miners this summer, nothing too cry about, I would be worried if there were none.
Looking great, Robin! Looks like the veg etc are enjoying the heat!
Most of them are for sure. Its's been a more bearable temp for a couple weeks now. The weird thing is the melons are behind. I thought I cracked the code ....alas not so much LOL. The cake beetle has arrived so not sure how long my plants have.
Not sure on the bush beans Robin, but they shouldn't put out runners unless they are stressed. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Looking gorgeous Robin. Your garden is so productive but also so aesthetically pleasing. Would love even a couple of days of your sun. I now have a bunny in the garden who has eaten the tops of some of my carrots! I’ve protected them now. 🙄. All the best. Mags.
Mags I was thinking about you and your comment about tomato pruning when I went after my plants more than typical. I just got very nervous about airflow. When you're a 'crammer inner' like me, (Audrey loves that term over at Real Food Comes Dirty) you always risk poor airflow. Most years I skirt by just fine, but we've gotten a lot more rain than what's typical for July. Yesterday, I had a cooler overcast day at last and took full advantage of planting out. My tomatoes are blushing all over now and it won't be long. Better get my canning supplies together.
😊😊😊
Beautiful Robin. I’m STILL waiting on cucumbers so I’ll have to take your word on the Socrates. I think next year I’m just choosing another variety because I can take disappointment in the garden but not with expensive seed. I have bush beans wanting to vine a bit too but no answer to why!
Oh so sorry to hear that! I was pleasantly surprised. Jess @plot 37 and James Prigioni both recommended Socrates on their channels, so I thought I'd try. I'm going to do a tasting as soon as the 3rd gives me a cuke to try.
It’s all looking very lush Robin. Well done
Looking great 👍 ❤xx
Thank you 😊 I love being retired, I don't have work forcing me out of my happy place.

26^~~~♡ Hello l subscribed have a good day 🛎 🎁
TY so glad to have you aboard. My next video will be a full tour of the edibles.
Looking good over there, Robin!
TY Steve.🥰 Santium Sunrise doesn't have many fruits for its size. However, R. Pocketbook and B B-Fast are both super loaded. TToP is a slower starter this year.
@@RobinGardens I'll check on my SS later today, Robin, but they were great last year. Now, where did I plant them? LOL
Your garden is very beautiful I really like it. You must have worked hard to create a beautiful garden.
TY. I appreciate your watching. Full tour next week.
Hi Robin, love your garden! Impressed with how neat everything looks!
I find if I weed anything I see as I'm walking around the raised bed gardens, I just never end up having to do a big weed session that nobody wants to do. That being said, the in ground beds do have a tendency to get more weedy .....so I try to tackle them once every 7-10 days. But once everything gets full the weeding is minimal because they out compete the weeds. TY for watching🥰
@@RobinGardens Best approach! I have small metal bins hidden around the garden so that I can do the same and just pop the weeds in there. Well that's the idea anyway, still end up with more weeds than I'd like!
@@PlasBachGarden LOL and it goes in cycles like 3 weeks after the maple seeds drop..little maple trees are growing everywhere.....
@@RobinGardens I feel your pain there! Nice chatting!
Wow a lots of peppers variety in your garden ma'am. There so beautiful😍
We're quite excited. However, the one pepper I bought at the nursery is not what it was labeled.....it's "hot" and not a Corono Di Toro. Too bad, as that was my husband's fav pepper last year.
Wow! What a fantastic array of tomatoes and peppers. Am I right in thinking you don't remove the side shoots on your tomatoes?
I do remove the bottom 2' of suckers and some leaf branches, then most but not all above that on all indeterminate's except cherry varieties. We get hotter here and the toms benefit from some extra cover to prevent sun scald. Powdery mildew has arrived, so tomorrow I will be pruning and pulling lots of things. My mini Marzano has some blushing happening. So crazy harvest time is right around the corner. Hubby harvested The Corono Di Toro while I was away (I told him to film it LOL) and they are not what we bought...they are hotties. Last year we had "peppergate" here in the US and often what you bought was not what it was supposed to be. Well it happened again.
You have the best t-shirts Robin I love them!! Your tomatoes look SO healthy I am so jealous, wow just wow! Speechless. Cool story about that pocketbook tomato too, I've never seen anything like that before and the aji mango was way bigger than I had anticipated 🍅🌶️ x
Al tried the supposed Corono Di Toro was hot...so it's been mislabeled at the nursery ---bummer.
It’s looking very nice Robin especially those Dr Whytche’s (unsure if I spelled that correctly). Mine are limping along but starting to see some wee fruits (except hot ones those seem fine but of course not what I’m really hoping for 😂)
TY. Yes those Dr. W's are the largest in the garden for sure, they might even beat the cherry varieties ripening. Or might just be my wishful thinking. Looks like we're dry for a few days now, so that should spur growth.
weird my Brad's Atomic Grape is not doing great either, very little fruiting.
They can fool you and turn around on a dime. Or can look spindly and weak and then produce.
Incredible! What will you do with all the Tomatoes and Peppers??
I'm planning on canning salsa and sauces. I'll appreciate all the effort in the winter.❤
Wow awesome peppers 🫑 mine are thinking about it. I think everything is acting different 😂 this year. My daughter said the Aji is hot but not too bad (she likes hot though). Really love the tomato boxes. Your tomatoes are way ahead of mine but the extreme heat has caused a bit of flower drop too. Have a super day send rain 😂, Ali 28c at 9 am 🌞🥵🇨🇦
OHHHH you are the reason I have standing water in the yard LOL. Well good to know about those Aji Mangos....they are a real producer for sure. I'm going to make pepper jelly for my family that likes hot.
Beautiful peppers and tomatoes! And exciting varieties. I read you had rain, hope no tornado, and hope it dries up, so you get lovely harvests from these plants.
7 Tornados in the area but we were thankfully untouched. TY for thinking of us. Well we had more rain yesterday......now standing water. Oh well the raised beds drain well so they should do OK. At least there is sun in-between these weather events.
Oh, wow! Your tomatoes and peppers are looking less like a garden and more like a FOREST, Robin! I know people love their Barry’s Crazy Cherry but I’ve never seen one in action like that. I hope you like cherry tomatoes because I think you’re going to be swimming in them soon! I almost bought seeds for Mini Marzano, but I have seeds for San Marzano instead for next year. But tell me how they are and if you cook with them! I like the idea of the MM. (Your t-shirt is cracking me up) Thank you for sharing!
Ya I have a bit of a pack it too tight problem. But most years I some how make it work. We have been having the rains like you had earlier......some standing water even. Hope we can stay ahead of the fungal issues🤞🍀🥰
Your garden is so beautiful. The gargoyles are just such a joy. So characterful. I love Rupert especially. Those beetroot.. wow.. amazing! The garlic looked great to me too. Sunflowers are looking fabulous too. There’s going to be some good contenders for Linda’s challenge. It’s really funny seeing you talk about how brutal the heat has been when we’re all wearing winter coats in England 😂 Wisconsin.. lovely! We have friends in Winconsin. They’re big Green Bay Packers fans. The scapes from those garlic are lovely and the lake looks amazing! What a lovely spot for a holiday home ❤
Rupert is Al's fav gargoyle. LOL everyone in Wisconsin loves thier Packers. The house is about an 1.5 hours drive from Green Bay which is the largest city near it. I should not whine about the heat, because all too soon there will be white stuff everywhere and long john's and coats.🥶
@@RobinGardens the summer season is so short
Beautiful garden and flowers!
Thank you. I'm more about my edibles these days, but I do try to keep my finger on the bloomers for the "pretty" and "pollinators". Appreciate your watching!
I watched this again to show my friend the gargoyles. Was just thinking about those alpine strawberries and wonder if you need to keep them cool for a few weeks. I did that when I first started them from seeds. And then this spring, they popped up in the planters where I had them last year and apparently had missed some berries, but they are still very small plants and won't produce this year.
Well they didn't get any "chill" time so we'll see. If it doesn't work I'll try that with the next batch. TY for showing to your friend.
I might have said a swear word when you pulled up those beets, Robin! Holy moly! And your sunflowers look happy and healthy! You were right to cage them. I love all your gargoyles! They're so fun. And all of your pots! That's what I am aspiring for with my patio.
I over winter most of the big pots with geraniums in my attached garage....saves a ton of $$ and effort in the spring. I pulled all my golden beets today for some airflow. Have you ever tried them? They are very mellow and less earthy than the Detroit reds.
@@RobinGardens I've eaten a golden beet before but I've had crap luck growing them! Though I've only tried growing them at my grandma's and her soil is sandy. Maybe I'll try them as a cool season crop, I still have seeds somewhere. My garage isn't insulated, do you think that matters for overwintering geraniums?
@@latebloomerdiaries4219 My garage never goes below 40 so no fear of freeze. If it gets stupid cold I wrap them in fleece.
Ps my sedum is blooming now too and not as tight heads as normal, my climbing nasturtiums took over I had to pull so many 😢😢 or I’d have them everywhere next year
So what's with that? I've NEVER had them bloom this early before. I don't know why but it worries me. I've pulled 4 nasties so far in my main growing spaces. They can be thugs when they are happy.
That is so bizarre, I had smaller garlic and none splitters and so did Nigel @Muddybootz, not a garlic kind of year I guess. I’m already harvesting seed too 👍. Tell Al when you’re retired everyday is a national holiday 😂😂. Great clip tips and spray. I have tried sowing strawberry seeds twice and got nothing 😢. Oh I love the dragon on the pot ❤. The three tiered is gorgeous too and all the flowers look stunning. Hope it has cooled down a bit and your not having to water as much, Ali 30c 🌞🇨🇦
I told Al that, but he's not buying it. Well the heat is on her baby.....90's again. That dragon is soooooo cool, I bring it inside for the winter to enjoy on an inside pot. Those poona cheer are crazy productive this year in a different spot. Blink and their big.
Nice garlic Robin, that's the way to do it 👍👍 I love Sweet Williams, you've reminded me that I still need to sow mine 😊 Looks like you are having similar weather to us with sunshine and rain. Beautiful garden you have, nice to have a tour and a nosey, thank you 😊 Have a great weekend ❤️
And the sunflowers are doing OK without the cage!🥰
Hey Robin, the weather looks like it's a bit more comfortable for you this week! Your beets look fabulous and the leaves look so good, mine have been scuppered by leaf miner 😢 I have to say you could nearly pass for a hair dresser with those snips, clips and spray bottle in hand 😆love it! My mum had statues made of similar material in our garden when we lived in the UK, and when I was really young I would paint them in all different water colours, it would rain and then I got to paint them all over again! They add so much character! Love it when you bring us along to Wisconsin 💖
I get leaf minor but they go of my Nasties mostly. The weather is a bit cooler but going right back tomorrow. Up in Wisconsin I started the days with long sleeves. Ran into 2 friends up there from where we all worked together....such serendipity. The first day started with a flat tire LOL. I style tomatoes with flare 🤣😂🥰
Love the garden gargoyles!
It's been fun collecting them.😁
