Hey! Thanks for checking out my vids. I will mostly be car-related clips and onboards from circuit events I attend. My main focus will be on my MG TF160 track car which I hope to start competing within the near future. I also daily an E46 BMW 330ci so may also have the odd bit of content on that. We shall see! Cheers!
MG TF K4 vs KV6 Engine Comparison at Cadwell Park - 10/11/24
Hi all. We finally managed to get the KV6 TF out for a proper test a few weeks ago at Cadwell. As we've been there plenty before, it's given us an opportunity to do a bit of a comparison between the K4 and KV6 engine. Not the most direct and scientific due to a number of factors, but still gives some idea of the differences for those interested.
The lower end torque has made the gearing feel a lot better around here (no more buzzing the limiter). Top speed sadly doesn't massively different, but definitely an improvement using that torque getting out of the tighter corners.
Track condition was not as good as due to on/off drizzle all day, suspension setup definitely needs some tweaking, tires are now a lot more worn, limited running due to oil temp issue, scruffy driving, etc.
For the most part car ran great! No issues other than the recurring high oil temperatures on push laps. A frustrating problem which meant for every push lap I'd then have to do a cool down. Hopefully we'll have this resolved soon.
At least it is quicker! I think we can shave a few seconds off with some further tweaks and better driving. Oh and it needs to be louder!!!

MG TF KV6 - V6 Test at Cadwell Park - Fastest Lap 10/11/24

Finally managed to get the KV6 TF out at a bigger circuit, and where better than Cadwell Park! Great place to get a comparison vs the 160 engine. Car performed well overall but still struggling with oil temp issues which limited running. Every time I did a push lap, I would have to back off the next one and let it cool down again. Got some ideas as to what could be causing this so still looking...

Here is a quick un-scientific comparison lap of the fastest times with the V6 vs the old VVC 160 engine. These laps are just timed directly from the video so not the most accurate, but it at least gives a small indication to the differences. Overall through the corners it seems quite similar so the extra weight of the V6 has not effected things to much. There is definitely room for improvement ...

These are the first shakedown laps with the new Rover KV6 engine. We were very lucky and basically had the track to ourselves on this test day. But considering how much has changed on the car that was to be expected and over all there we...

The car is back! Since the blown engine last year it's been a mad dash to get the car back up and running again. God I wish MGR had done this as a sort of last hurrah before they faded into the history books
Very interesting comparison. Of course the figures don't do justice to the lovely sound of the KV6.
@@StarHorseLover2012Thanks, worth the effort for the sound if nothing else! We realised it's also a tad quiet compared to other cars at cadwell so going to debaffle the muffler a bit.
What tires did you use?
@@marioopianofiga1260 These are Nankang AR1's. 225/45r16 square. Probably 150+ extra track miles on this set between the two clips. Definitely on the more worn side now having done 4 or 5 trackdays.
Nice to see
Looks great fun. Am i right in thinking your fighting a lot of understeer?
nice
How did you modify the V6 to bring it up to 210hp? It's from a ZT right?
Basically yes. This engine is from a ZS 180 as the ZS uses the PG1 Gearbox (same as TF) where as ZT has a Getrag Box. Made it a bit simpler to do the conversion from ZS. As far as I am aware the 2.5L ZS and ZT KV6's are Identical except 190 ZT KV6 has a slightly more responsive cam on the throttle body which can make it feel sportier. To get this power all we have done is Custom filter/intake, Cams + Verniers (Piper 270), Full exhaust and a tune on rolling road. No headwork or intensive engine work. Standard ECU remapped. Other than the cams, I suspect the exhaust made a big difference. We put a lot of time into making a custom long primary/equal length exhaust manifold which must have been a big improvement over the standard manifold. Also with a sports CAT. Unfortunately the inlet manifold seems to be the main restriction above 210bhp. There is another V6 TF that makes almost identical power with similar specs but they have ported heads and a standard manifold I believe. Above 210bhp the inlet manifold seems to be the restriction.
Wow, I wouldn't expect more than 15% trough this modifications. Do you have problems with overheating?
@@floke888 we didn't expect that much tbh. Especially torque curve which hits peak (200ftib) at 3k then holds that all the way up to 6.5k rpm! Much more usable power. Temps are all good. Only issue is oil temps after multiple push laps start to rise. We ditched the standard oil heat exchanger due to space and went for a small oil matrix instead, but clearly not quite enough. Just switched to a much larger aftermarket heat exchanger so hopefully that will do the job.
looks nice and scary :)
great save!
Those engines love to be reved, great save at the end, i really enjoyed watching this video.
Glad you enjoyed! I miss how revvy that engine was, shame it died. (Due to overreving😢)
Glad you enjoyed! I miss how revvy that engine was, shame it died. (Due to overreving😢)
Great! Same gear ratios and tires? Same max rpm?
Thanks! Yes same gear ratios, tires and everything else. Max RPM of V6 is 6800, where as we had the old 160 engine raised to 7500. Probably why it blew to be honest.
Would you recommend going higher than a certain rpm with a stock vvc?
@@fatunicorn6933 personally no, not anymore. I think K Maps and SAWS remaps both raise the rev limit to 7500 or around there. The engine wants to rev more and you can make it with engine work. On track I definitely used the extra RPM, but in the end the reason it failed was valve bounce due to over reving. Valve hit piston and everything basically smashed inside the engine. Perhaps we were just unlucky, but I'd just leave it in the future.
probably been asked a million times, but how did you fit your seats in? did you just bolt into the floor?
@@markwilson8899 No, we built some custom brackets to get the seats as low as possible around the structural box under the seats. Some people remove the box and create new mounting points on the floor. But If you search for "Rob Bell" or "Project Shed" and seats, somewhere he has a page on what he did, which is basically the same. Basically a laser cut and folded steel bracket. Would have got a few made to sell but it all depends on what seat you have + if you have a cage.
@VVCandVANOS I would do the same, just try and get some custom brackets made... perhaps I'll try and find the sort needed, and I guess it'll be cobras or something like project shed used. I just fancy better seats for mg track days/generally find them pretty comfy!@@VVCandVANOS
@@markwilson8899 Yes good seats definitely makes a big difference. I'm quite tall so the seats and brackets made a big difference. Ours are just Sparco Sprints, generic universal side/floor mounts attached to our folded steel plates. I'd definitely recommend getting narrower seats for the TF. Get some seats you like with their standard/universal side brackets, and then depending on that seats mounting, and how much interior you have, you can determine exactly how your custom steel brackets need to be. Our seat is located more central to avoid the roll cage + no centre console. It's a bit of a faff but this is why you can't simply make a universal seat bracket for TF that fits all cases, space can be a bit tight.
@@VVCandVANOS helpful, thanks!
Which ECU ur are using?
Just the standard ECU that came from the donor ZS180 Engine. Believe its a "Siemens ems 2000". Trying to keep the car eligible to compete in MG Cup/Cockshoot, so trying to stay comparable to what the ZS's are allowed to do, i.e. no aftermarket ECU.
@VVCandVANOS thanks for the information.
Rover KV6 engine makes 100 smiles per liter.
Can you make my rover 75 sound this good 😂😂
Haha, don't see why not. It's basically just one silencer at the back with a sports cat + air filter. It does have a custom long primary, equal length manifolds that probably also help the noise.
is the added weight noticeable?
Considering we've not changed anything on the suspension since the K4 it's not bad. We will be making some changes You can definitely sense the weight behind you and use it to throw the back end out. Quite a lot of lift off oversteer currently, which can be useful, but I enjoy the feel of that a bit to much and that's what causes most of slides. Just need to drive better. That and brake bias is a bit messed up currently I think. Very interested to weigh it. Need to find someone with some proper scales.
sounds amazing
Thanks very happy with how it sound now. Probably the main reason for going V6!
that looks like some need for speed race track
What setup do you have for brakes and tyres? The 16in rins limit tyre choice but allow for the ap racings but the 15s have loads of tyre choice so is there a way to upgrade the brakes on the 15in rims?
We use 16" Abingdon (ex-cup car) wheels which are the lightest option you can get other than the "ultralights" which are very rare and expensive. We use the standard AP 4 pot calipers front and rear with a bias valve controlling the rear. You can't normally fit 4 pots behind Abingdons without a large spacer but we've done some quite serious hub/hub flange modifications so that we are running minimal spacer without affecting geometry to much. Cup cars had special low profile AP calipers. Fitting 4 pots under 15'' wheels requires serious caliper modification which I would say is bordering on dangerous. We use 225/45r16 Nankang AR1's square, which are taller diameter than standard but much wider. There are lots of options in this size as well as 215/45 and 205/45 I think. 225/45r16 is essentially the same tire size as the slicks the cup cars used. In theory you do loose a little acceleration but the increase in grip far outweighs that.
That thing is awesome! Ive got a kv6 swapped zr but i bet thats even more fun to drive
Thanks! Nice, I bet that goes like stink!Assume that's a road going car? Did you have to upgrade the ZR radiator? Would love one in a ZR as a daily. I'm sure there will be some rear end fun to be had in TF on track.
Wow that thing puts the power down. Physics is wonderful.
mwoar!
how much power does it make now?
Currently makes 209bhp 198 ftib torque with the V6. Think it was 179bhp 125ftib before with the 160 engine, and that was all at top of rev range. Now torque on v6 peaks at 3000rpm and basically stays maxed all the way to 6800rpm!
Very nice!! That must be satisfying. I myself just successfully started my self rebuild vvc engine, quaife LSD and multiple reliability mods. Was hard since I'm engineer and absolutely not a mechanic.
Yes has been many years in the making so good feeling knowing we are close now! Nice! The Quaife will make a huge difference especially if you take it on track. This project has taught me so much about working on cars, can take a while to figure things out but a great feeing to know you've done it yourself!
Awesome. An under rated engine. I hope to catch you at teesside this year!
Thanks, not as powerful as some other options but in keeping a rover engine we should still be able to enter an MG/rover championship. Something a bit different to a k4 turbo as well, which was the other option. Yes we will definitely be there at some point! Will let you know when we plan to be there.
@@VVCandVANOS yeh there is always something nice about keeping it in the family. I'd probably go for a Audi 1.8T if I wanted power these days. I bet the torque is great for the tf. I'd love to see a side by side lap video showing how it handled with the vvc engine compared to the v6
@@VVCandVANOSalso, did you take any photos or videos of the conversion. I'm really interested
@@AdamMGTF Seen a few audi/vw swaps with that engine i think. I imagine they are a lot easier and give good power. Fitting the KV6 lump was not the most simple or powerful option but does feel appropriate. I have taken lots of images and videos through the process. I had originaly planned to document it on here but I simply have not had the time. We have to be out of our workspace at the end of this month so the whole process has been a bit of a mad rush to get it done before then. Once things have calmed down I'll definitely do a vid on how we did it. If you are on FB we shared some progress on the "Modified F/TF" group as that is quite active. Definitely be a comparison lap at Teeside and Cadwell for sure!
@@VVCandVANOS brilliant. I think it's great that you did what you wanted for your car rather than whatever was simpler or whatever the internet says. I be it'll be a cracking good drive. I believe the kv6 is a very light engine as well? I don't use social media other than UA-cam or I'd have had a look :) I'll look forward to what you put on here. A side by side would be great. Obviously it can't convey the feeling of driving it..but it'll be interesting to see where it's faster or slower etc
that must have been a really tight fit getting that in there
Very tight! All the tolerances on this car are very close now bit it is in and working well! Quite a bit of subframe and chassis modification required. Custom fuel tank/exhaust/etc. Will detail in another video at somepoint.
Very cool
To be fair that mg going well, I'd like to know the spec
Cheers, detailed specs are in the video description. Short version is totally standard 160 engine internals + exhaust/intake @ 179 BHP. Close ratio box + LSD. Fully upgraded suspension/ARBs/etc. Caged with custom aero, cooling and rear brakes. All on AR1's. Will do a full spec video soon as the car has just had a massive engine overhaul. I believe these MX5's were running 250BHP+ and had plenty of other supporting mods.
Glad there was no crash! I have just purchased an MGF and love seeing and hearing them on track. Many thanks
Some how saved that one! I'd definitely recommend giving it a run out at a circuit somewhere they are great fun on track. This car is getting a lot of work done at the moment so hopefully have some more clips of it in action later this year. Cheers!

Any suggestion on TF's tyres for Track Use? Finding it hard to match the oe fitment.
You wont find anything in OE sizes for 16" wheels. Basically I had to accept I had to run a tire with a taller profile. In theory you loose a little acceleration but overall better off having the extra grip. I personally run 225/45r16 square on this car, and have run the same size on our other standard TF 160 as well. That's about as big as you can go without major modification. Full lock will rub. If car is lowered with an aggressive alignment you'd need to modify inner wheel arches and pull the wings, both front and rear. For a more standard car (especially if still road driven) I'd probably go for a 205/45r16, perhaps with 225 rear. Staggered setup is probably a bit safer and more understeery if your new to track driving. You'll be able to find 225/45r16 & 205/45r16 available in most track tires (AR1, R888, AO52, AD08rs, etc). So far I've only used Nankang AR1's which have been awesome in the dry, especially for the price. I did have an old set of AO48's which were really good on the standard TF160 but unfortunately now unavailable.
thanks a lot, man, going for 205/45r16

Exactly, onwards to the next engine... whatever that may be. It was probably going to happen at some point. Oh noo! Long slide in to the barrier! Looks a bit slippy on that day. With it being so bumpy as well I bet it was interesting in the wet. At least it didn't look to bad for the car. I find these incidents give me the excuse to go a bit mad and upgrade things.

Sorry, I had intended to let you know on your other comment next time we were going it just became a spur of the moment thing. We both managed to get out of work early so grabbed the car and decided to head up on that day as it was still loaded up from Cadwell. It's really fun especially in this car. It's almost unrivalled in the corners and under braking compared to the other cars there and feels mega fast. Just a bit slow on the straight. Might have to do something about that now. No doubt we will be back to Teesside!
@@VVCandVANOS I thought you'd enjoy it. It is a track that really suits nimble little 'low power' cars. You are up and down the gearbox and it's all about tiny details I love it! Glad you enjoyed it. Great comparison video! Happy for us to share this to our socials?
Thanks! Yes absolutely please feel free to share.
🤔 I wonder if this could be utilised
Does the b4 have a longer 1st and 2nd and shorter 5th?
Yes that's correct. On really tight sections it makes 1st somewhat usable (probably more use on a hillclimb) and 2nd is much closer to 3rd, meaning I don't have to faff and shift up at an awkward time. 2nd makes a massive difference coming in to the hall bends at Cadwell. Probably slightly slower of the line but much better for keeping the speed up. Have not even used 5th yet, perhaps on a bigger circuit like Silverstone I would.
Excellent driving in the corners and great save when it went a tad wild. Bravo!!!

Hello bud sorry to bother you but what steering boss kit did you buy and does everything still work with it? Horn and indicators etc? Cheers mate
Hi no worries! Unfortunately I can't remember the brand of the Boss as it was a while ago now, I think it was just an unbranded eBay special job on that. Came with everything for wiring so horn still works. Can't seem to see it up for sale anymore. I think there is an OMP one but I'd heard there was something weird about them. It does also have a Driftworks Quick release as well which came with all the relevant wiring so not had any issues.
@VVC&VANOS did you have any issues with the rotary plug for steering wheel? That's what I keep reading about, love your videos by the way, inspired me to go an buy a tf last night as a replacement for my mr2 mk3 I had before. Cheers 🍻
@@rallyeluke From memory it was a little fiddly but not too bad. Think I figured out which pins triggered the horn by process of elimination and sort of bodged something together so only those pins were connected. Then just zip tied the airbag cable inside somewhere it wouldn't get tangled. Installed resistors elsewhere to disable the SRS light. I'll be fixing gear linkage tomorrow so I'll have a look and remind myself how exactly I did it, going to do a full build video at some point anyway. Thanks, hopefully go somewhere other than Cadwell soon! Nice, yeah they are great cars. Always fancied an MR2 but always had MG's in the family. TF's have plenty of quirks but great fun and some cheap bargains out there too. Seen a decently track modified 160 yesterday on Facebook for only £2000!
Nice. Are you using the fixed height Spax dampers or the adjustable platform ones? I’ve got a set of adjustable spax’s to fit to mine.
Cheers! These are the fully adjustable spax. Seem to be really good so far. Wanted to have as much options as possible. Still have plenty to fiddle and tune. Set pretty low with high damping at the moment.
nice
Did you remove the box chassis part underneath the seat and welded new seat rails to have a lower seating position?
We considered doing that but we actually laser cut and folded 3mm steel brackets that fix to the original fixing locations, which then have 5mm Aluminium seat brackets bolted to them. Probably not the lightest option, but don't think I had easy access to a welder when we made those. I'm 6'2" and fit plenty low as it is now with the boxes still in.
ah! so happy you are back and posting again! Was cheering for you take that mx5. Pity about the oops at the end.
Thanks! Have been very limited on time recently, but I've got a few videos on the car planned i've been wanting to do for a while. Just needed to focus on getting it back running, which it very nearly is. Fingers crossed i'll be able to upload more regularly from now on. Maybe chase down a few more MX5's without getting carried away next time!
Nice driving mate, enjoyed that.
Cheers! Hopefully will be able to get it out and push the car again soon.
They make you wear full overalls and gloves on a track day? I've never that in 12 years?
Normally your apparently supposed to wear a long sleeve shirt and trousers, although some organisers aren't so bothered. I only wear gloves as I tend to get sweaty hands which can ruin the alcantara on the wheel.
