How to use Opacity Masks in Adobe Illustrator
Переглядів 45 тис.3 роки тому
In this video you will learn what an Opacity mask is and how to use them in Adobe Illustrator. I will show you two different ways in which they can be applied to help you understand how they can be used in your illustrations. An opacity mask is something that you can apply to any object that you create, giving you the ability to define the transparency of that object with more control. This wil...
Painting a wall mural | art time-lapse
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
My home studio was feeling a bit bare, so I finally bit the bullet and painted a mural on one of the walls. I wanted to create something that was bold with a clean, stripped back colour palette. Underwater Illustration | Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (Speed Drawing)

In this illustration I use Adobe Illustrator to create the shapes and subtle gradients and textures. I then imported the vectors into Photoshop where I add many textures, giving the illustration a more organic and hand made aesthetic. I wish you would be back 🙂
20 steps for a gradient transparency. In Coreldraw with 2 steps your done.
What do you mean "again, paste in place". Every time I do that it pulls the first image to the front. But when I try to add grain texture to the gradient, it says I've got nothing selected....
Omg thank you SO MUCH! I’m mainly a photoshop user where clipping is so so easy. Being new to illustrator - I feel like I’ve been playing around for weeks trying to find out how to do it with! Still a lot steps for something that I feel like could be so much more simple - but got there in the end
This tutorial is gonna be so confusing for beginners.
Hi, I've tried this tutorial many times before I could make it work. If you're frustrated too, this is what you're probably doing wrong: when you cut the texturized gradient, you don't have to paste it again on the artboard, but on the black miniature of the opacity mask, in the transparency panel (select the black square first).
when i save the file as a JPEG, the mask stops working and the effect doesn't show up in the picture, any idea why not?
It looks quiet here. But, your explanations are clear to follow.
So here I am being the insomniac that I am, scrolling through UA-cam shorts and who pops up???? I know this girl. Sexy designs ❤
hehehe thanks Pete!
Is there a way to change the scale of the grain? The grain are always very large even if the settings are down
Thanks Sofia, for sharing your expertise with us. Excellently explained tutorial. Subscribed and looking forward to your next video!
Nice keep moving
"Promo SM"
If anyone wants to simplify this even more just create ur gradient first and then go to effects > grain. Bc all the copy and pasting lost me but I can see how it can be useful to achieve a certain look
This is utterly Brilliant! I will use this to add some texture to some gradient mesh fruit. Newly subscribed, thank you so much!!
You're very welcome!
Very nice tutorial sofia, thank you
you're very welcome :)
we love ricky!!
hehe thank you!!
Hey I was wondering if you know how to apply this affect to text, my problem is that there is a gradient on each letter instead of from one end of the word to the other.
Hey! This is an amazing tutorial. Thanks for your content ♥
You're very welcome and thanks for your kind words! :)
I love your style and content! pls continue ♥
Thanks so much for the kind words! :)

Obrigado Rick! Ricky é a estrela do vídeo! :)
Would be really useful to see the keyboard shortcuts on screen (like paste in place) as you go ! Thank you!
This is a great idea! I will definitely keep this in mind for future tutorials :)
Okay, the end of this video is what got me!!!!! 😍 ADORABLE.
haha thank you!
Ho did you make a time lapse
I used quicktime to record my screen while I made the illustration and then time-lapsed it using Adobe Premiere :)
Ok, you have a new subscriber! Very easy to understand, and the variations show different creative options.
Thanks so much for the lovely feedback :)
SAVE MY LIFE GIRL ! TKS!!!!
Glad I could help! :)
Thumbs up for the doggie.
haha thanks, he's the best!
great tutorial, thank you
You're very welcome :)!
How do you leave the opacity mask?
In the transparency window, click on the square on the left. This will leave the opacity mask. To edit the opacity mask, click on the square to the right. I hope this helps! :)
this is driving me nuts... i can't figure out why the copied layer disappears altogether when the grain is applied, the original layer is gone.. what am i doing wrong -_______-
OK...i got it but it didnt work in exactly this order working from this AI file.. FIRST, when selecting the object, UNGROUP. And when selecting the specific object, you must copy and past that object in the TRANSPARENCY window and then select in the desired contrast color and THEN apply the gradient and then the texture.. it maybe the newer versions Illustrator thats messing this up.. but i got it..
Hi sorry for any confusion! Glad it finally worked :)
thank you, good and easy discription
Thanks Susanne!
thank you Sofia!
You're welcome! :)
after i created the mask, i cant seem to be able to select the items behind... i really hate illustrator, the most overcomplicated and frustrating program in the world
Hi Hernán A, Sorry to hear this! Did you manage to work it out?
An interesting and creative technique, easy to follow examples, I will certainly be using them in my next project. Thank you for sharing. 👍
Thanks Michael! glad it was helpful.
@@sofiavarano7959 I've been using illustrator for many years, and only recently have I been delving more into its creative functionality. Enjoyable tutorials such as yours, help me to gain confidence and add to my artistic armoury. 👍
Looks sick! Favourite artist!!!
Thanks dude! you're the best!
amazing, thank you
Thanks!
Thank you so much and nice dog :D
You're welcome and thanks :)
In the last part for clipping the lines, it seemed very much like just creating a clipping mask in the regular way. Is there a difference or is it just two ways to do the same thing?
Hi! Great question. Yes, there a few ways to create clipping masks and essentially they all have the same outcome. I enjoy using this way as it allows me to have greater control over the clipping mask and edit with ease. I hope that helps. Thanks :)
Love your style! Is the initial sketch from a sketchbook imported into Illustrator?
Thanks Joel! I created the sketching on my iPad using procreate. I then imported it into illustrator as a jpg to use as a reference :)
amazing turtorial, love It
Thanks so much!
