for a few years during my childhood-between perhaps the ages of 8 and 11-i began to grow anxious and fearful of leaving the house in the morning for school. i was afraid of my journey to school since, where i grew up in West Africa, i would almost invariably be witness to extreme poverty and violence from the windows of the school bus (i suppose i was 9 or so when i first saw someone get killed). before i left the house in the morning to catch the bus, i would sit in the hallway at the telephone. i would lift the receiver and listen to the dialtone. i would close my eyes and let its soft, distant drone fill my mind. sometimes a soft light would appear to me then, a kind of calm coming over my body. when the dial tone cut out, i would press down on the switchhook to start it again. i would spend 5 minutes or so each morning doing that. listening to this piece brought me in deep and tender contact with that memory, even arousing some tactile sensation (cool yellowed plastic of the receiver in my hand, the scratchy fabric of my parents' chair, the play of the switchhook). gentle tears began to form and i felt held for a while, then and now, in a calm and safe place. i made contact with that little boy for a moment and we felt at peace together. i am very grateful to you for that moment and for your art. p.s. it occurs to me that, during my adolescence, one of my favourite albums was múm's 'Finally We Are No One" - i can hear a slight echo of the track "K/Half noise" here too.
